As an active minecraft player who likes to recreate real life locations, I think Mojang should make an accurate Earth map.
The 1/1500 scale maps that are currently up for download in other forums and websites, although very nice to look at, leave something to be desired in that our buildings are not 1/1500 scale. My house for instance, should not span across Illinois into Indiana. Besides that, there is little "fun" and beauty in a survival game when there are 1 block deep oceans and you can only dig 9 blocks down.
What I am suggesting is a world type that would bring minecraft players into a survival game that as accurately as possible represents our big blue planet, Earth.
I understand that the amount of work and time to do such a thing would be incredible but I am not asking to map out all the caves in the balkans.

Do you realize how huge the file size and how much it would lag if everything was the exact size and shape as earth? It would also take a VERY long time. They would not release a new update for a long time. People would get pretty upset if there would be no 1.8 update until a year later all because of a map that Mojang is making just because some poster on Minecraft Forums said they should (no offense).

That's mean to say, man. How about some constructive criticism?
If a 1:1500 scale world file is around 3.5GB- How big would a 1:1 scale be? If we had a formula for that, then we could figure out how big it would be, then choose if it would be a worthy venture to split it up into *smaller sub worlds* or if that would still be too big.
*Sub worlds:
Like say each state/ province. Then if you wanted you could cut and paste the area you wanted in mcedit and open it in your own world.
in the indev game Seed of Andromeda you will be able to recreate earth very easy, all you need is a high detail height-map of earth and a temperature map and done

If a 1:1500 world is 3.5 GB a 1:1 world would be 1500 times that size. So it would be 5250 GB, or about 5 TB. I myself have a ton of storage from salvaging old computers and I could barely hold that much. If you can DL something at say... 10 MB/s it would take like 370 days to download if my math is right.
That being said, what about just making it a custom generation option? That would be substantially easier to add. Either way, I don't see a need for this. The best part of the game (in my opinion) is that the world is nothing like Earth.

I see no point in having such a massive thing.
You really wouldn't even know it was earth considering how big it would be.
It'd just be a waste of Mojang's time and our memory....
Seems like an enormous amount of work for a feature a tiny minority of players would actually use. No support.

I brain farted pretty hard there... Yeah, that's pretty simple math.
And there you go anyway, even if it were split into parts it wouldn't be feasible.
This could propose a rework of the minecraft world save system. If on world save can easily reach 1GB then that needs to be fixed, say I have a collection of all my survival worlds that I ever made, that could be as little as 30GB+ (likely around 100, I explore a lot) in my minecraft install folder. Though one world can be small, I think it could do better with efficiency and compression.
(If someone wants to make a new thread suggesting that/ or research a little into it, I'll stand by your side!)

Minecraft already compresses worlds pretty well; a world that I have that takes up 165 MB has over 2 billion blocks and would otherwise be over 2 GB if each block took up one byte of space in the save files (not to mention the game saves skylight, blocklight and metadata for each block; each 16x16x16 section has over 10 KB of uncompressed data in it, only 4 KB of which is actual block data, and a chunk can have up to 16 sections).
Also, to make an accurate 1:1 scale model of Earth you'd need a world with a surface area of 510 trillion blocks (510 million square kilometers), which can only be compressed so much - and that is just for a single vertical layer; you'd need almost 20,000 layers to model everything from Challenger Deep to Mount Everest and that gives you over 10 quintillion blocks (that's 10,000,000,000,000,000,000) - even with a 1,000,000:1 compression ratio that is 10 TB of disk space (yeah, the game doesn't save empty sections, so that will save a lot of room, but you'll still need a LOT of space).
PS: The save size of a 1:1 scale model would be 1500 SQUARED (2.25 million), not 1500 times, bigger because you increase the size in two dimensions, resulting in about 7,875 terabytes of disk space - and that doesn't even consider accurately replicating height (see above).
I didn't say a 1:1 representation, that would be ridiculously huge. I just think the 1:1500 scale maps don't really give much options to players who want to make realistic recreations.
The Province idea might be a better alternative to making the whole planet.
That being said, what about just making it a custom generation option? That would be substantially easier to add. Either way, I don't see a need for this. The best part of the game (in my opinion) is that the world is nothing like Earth.
I'm not an expert here but I'm fairly sure that procedural generation doesn't work that way. Minecraft can generate a psuedorandom world based on a seed, to recreate the earth 1:1 scale through world generation would take a miraculous seed (one that is quite likely statistically impossible), even then, mountains would be capped at 256 m high, note that that's technically only 193 m above sea level.
Offering a custom mode that bypasses that limitation and offers realistic heights of mountains and depths of seas in Minecraft would cause devastating lag under the current chunk system. So the chunk system would need a complete overhaul.
Further, Earth is roughly (quite roughly) spherical in shape, Minecraft is a flat world. At best you can get a 1:1 2D projection of the earth, this could involve massive distortions of continents somewhere. Just look at Antarctica here and now compare it to Antarctica on a world map.
Otherwise there would be a need to create a minecraft world that actually wraps around to form the surface of a sphere, but that's it's own suggestion entirely.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure Mojang has better things to do with their time than to create a 1:1 scale minecraft world model of the earth.
I'm not an expert here but I'm fairly sure that procedural generation doesn't work that way.
This tutorial might be of interest to map makers.
Procedural generation does work that way, but I don't think by procedural generation he means a specific world seed. I think he means, generate the area around you based on it's own algorithm, not the one that is already in place. If that makes since...
And that tutorial pretty much solves my needs, why rely on mojang when I can generate a 1:1 scale replica of the county/ surrounding region I want by myself?
Anyhow, I think it's pretty much determined that this suggestion is not worth the time/ effort- thread =/= pointless. Though something has been learned here, at least I have a few things I can take away from this (the most astounding being that the people of MCF are capable of adult discussions ).

The forum is called "Suggestions" if you don't like it then you don't have to comment on it. What's the point of having suggestions if you think
That's not how Minecraft Forums works. If people see an idea they don't like, they won't just say "Well, I don't have anything nice to say about this, so I just won't post." Unfortunately, if you post something in the Suggestions section, you will get some criticism.
I read the first little bit, and didn't support. When people suggest this, I don't think they know who hard it would be. It would take years. Many, many, MANY years to do this. You understand that they would have to search every meter of earth (that's how big it is) and do it exactly the same?! Also, are you talking about buildings, too? That would make it 100 times harder! No support, it's too big of a project.

I would do a facepalm thing right now. If you post here, do not complain if people don't like your idea. Yes, it is for suggestions. But it is also for seeing if people like your suggestions. If nobody likes it, then Mojang won't add it. Don't get mad if people don't like your idea, because you posted it.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
The Province idea might be a better alternative to making the whole planet.
