Well, camels are considered a type of cattle, and so as cows. What if cows may spawn in deserts - but it has a texture of camels? It can still drop the same drops.
The cow retexture (camels) can spawn in oases and desert wells (Camels need water). However, your cows won't change texture when they go to a desert.
Their retexture can also be obtained in creative mode - with the Cow spawn egg, without having to see a desert.
They can still be breeded to make a calf, same as cows. They still drop raw beef, but they can drop a different color of leather, which can be used to make tan leather armor. (Camels are light brown in color). Tan leather armor is still leather armor but dyed light brown. Still you can change colors via using dyes.
What about being able to milk it? That sounds weird to me.
I'm not fond of the idea, mainly because I like the desert being empty. It makes for an interesting challenge.

Camels actually do provide meat and milk, but having that in Minecraft? Despite the fact that it possible, it's still seems unfitting.
I'll admit that Badprenup's post kinda changes my opinion at bit. At best, I can see the camel as being an extra "variant" of a horse or something, but as a cow duplicate? Not really...
I always thought the camel could be a potential variation of what they added with the horse update. You have horses, donkeys, and mules now. Horses can be equipped with armor, and donkeys/mules can have chests. The unique aspects of the camel would be that it'd spawn in deserts (as opposed to plains like horses and donkeys), and it could not be equipped with armor or chests, but that it could ride two players.
I'm almost positive I also another thread suggesting what I always though of it too.

I've said before I wouldn't mind having Desert Horses. Mainly because they actually do exist in real life and because they don't really make Deserts any easier because you still need a Saddle to use them and they don't give you food.

As far as I can know - Minecraft is based on unrealism. Minecraft deserts have zombies and skeletons spawning in it (if it's night time.) You are not alone. There are DESERT VILLAGES.
I don't think the camel would fit as a cow model. Another variant of the horse would be better. Looks more camel-like.
As for the idea itself, Support! Perhaps being able to milk them, and maybe ride them? They'd be slower, of course, a lot slower, but I can see camels being used for transportation, even using chests!
Oh boy! Maybe if only we can modify the cow retexture to have the same mechanics as donkeys and mules...but slower. But thanks for your support though!

I could understand donkeys re textured as camels spawning in the desert. But people don't really eat camels.
And they don't milk them either.
[Edit: Apparently they do... o_0]
I think deserts can be improved but not exactly like this. I like the idea of camels but I think they should be their own respective mobs that can spawn in respective oasis biomes. Maybe they can be like donkeys in holding chests on their sides, to hold items, since camels are usually pack animals. They can possibly be able to be ridden like horses but have lower movement stats and maybe higher or lower health stats (I don't know if camels are more or less rugged than horses). Partial support.

Camels dropping raw steaks?
Other than that the idea sounds alright.

You better know that you're not alone in a desert. Do you live in Egypt? Have you seen someone riding camels?
*facepalm* Minecraft deserts...
