I hate going on servers that are supposed to embrace stealth when they have name tags, such as MineZ or PvP servers in general. It ruins the experience for me, just being able to be attacked because someone saw my name through a wall.
They should add an option for owning a server to be able to turn off Name plates, or at least fix them so you can only see name tags when they are not behind blocks and 50 blocks away.
Anyways, any opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

This would be cool for perhaps RPG servers as well adding an extra level of depth and having to recognize someone by how they look (assuming it was that complex of a community). Support.

Yeah, kinda like embracing skins it would add far more depth.
/doplayernameplatesee false or a better version of that would work. Support.

If you insist on addressing me by name just say Adsper. It's annoying when people say my full out username. "Oh hey AdswordTheBaws54763721" ~Mount and Blade
I have a reason not to add this. Because there is a better implementation.
/gamerule nametagDistance <amount>
Sets how far away you can see name tags. 0 would disable names, and whatever other number you put is how close you have to be for it to render. That way you could make so you could see names from really far away, from just a couple blocks away, or disable it entirely. Default would be 16, and I think the maximum would probably be 256 or something.

Though I think the ideal setup would be what Badprenup suggested, having a distance based game rule command.
