For those awesome battles or, more likely, fights with monsters, you might sometimes want to call out to other players. Aside from shooting a firework or being lucky enough to be in an audio chat with the person you need to alert, there's no way to quickly signal to other players. You could try to type very quickly, but even a fast typist like me (80-120WPM) risks getting blown up by a creeper or killed in battle while typing. And then slow typists like my brother at like 30WPM always die in the wild.
A horn would serve this purpose. It sounds like a battle horn and is loud enough for players up to 100 blocks away to hear distinctly. You can only blow the horn once every 8 seconds. If you suddenly see a creeper and need to warn the others or need help but can't stop to type, you blow the horn by right-clicking with it selected. You could also sound it when you see monsters approaching your town, more convenient than typing and a lot cooler. Or blow the horn as you're about to attack someone just for effect.
Cost: 1 slot in your inventory, 3 iron ingots crafted like a bucket but sideways.

I might be wrong, but aren't battle horns made of horns and bones, because they give the perfect acoustics... or something like that, right?
So, maybe the iron should just be replaced by bone. Also, a bit of an issue, there's absolutely no reason to use it in Singleplayer, unless you want to feel like a god and standoff against a bunch of zombies all alone. So that should be remedied.
Item easter egg: Renaming the horn to "Horn of Gondor" and blowing it in combat will temporarily stun any undead mobs in your proximity. Just a joke. kidding.

Horns have been made out of metal and bone but not metal and bone together. For sure, the very earliest horns were made of horn bones. If it's going to be a bone horn, it should definitely break after a number of uses, but if it's iron, it should last forever like a bucket.
If you are just in singleplayer... it's not like you're cheating anyone but yourself if you use the Horn of Gondor thing, and I always love Easter eggs. As far as non-cheating gameplay goes, this is just for multiplayer unless you just want effect (like fireworks). Personally, if I actually played singleplayer, I'd sound the horn for effect when I'm charging into monsters.
I think it should be equippable.
Also hotkey that when held, activates horn, and then the horn is used with the number keys.
It's far more useful that way, number keys means you can play more notes, meaning more signals.
And songs.

Hmm, so you can go down right left down right left to play Saria's Song or up left right for Wind's Requiem? Zelda joke.
Yeah, I would definitely like that, but I doubt Mojang would do it. They seem to want to avoid adding too many buttons and keep the controls simple. If we were going to have buttons to blow a horn, we would already have a button to draw the sword. I've enabled Zombe Wield for the sword-wield button, by the way.
I like the idea too, I think you could make a horn from bone, iron, or narwal horn (which would just come as a pre-made horn). All should have a durability, though I'd think it would be 128 uses for bone, and 512 for iron, so almost unlimited. Could also make it with wood, which would give a flute or pan-pipe. I think each horn should have a different sound, probably 2-3 different notes (a fanfare), that way you can have some variety in sounds.
Different horn sounds also lets you signal different things, or lets 4 players each have a unique sound if moving together. An argument could be made for a gold horn too.

Also, it's not like the sound will pervade the whole world.
I understand that. But given enough people in one area with a horn, if they have at least a few brain cells they can figure out that all they need to do is stagger when one uses their horn to game the 8 second cooldown.
Also, it wouldn't need to pervade the whole world. Just a heavily trafficked common area.
Sometimes, but you can get stuck in the typing mode by accident and send "WWWWSSSSSSSSSADSSSSSSDS" then get blown up. And even typing "HELP" takes enough time to get killed in a close fight.

I hate when that happens! I'm trying to type a message in a PvP team match (Say: Overcast Network) like "help on the skybridge"
When an enemy attacks me and it comes out like "help on the skybridgesdddddaaasww"

An alternate timeline emerges.
However, we must first start from the beginning...

Yeah, I thought of that. It's not nearly as bad as the other kinds of griefing you can do on a vanilla server, so I don't consider it an issue.
