Also, I'd not put them in the Nether but directly in the Overworld, and make them live in Straw houses in a new plains sub-biome full of wheat.
The Netherbrick doors wouldn't make sense, honestly. You're asking fr a door made of bricks. A Quartz door would make more sense, but the Gold fit in with the other things. Also, if you look at the post, you'd see that I have all the custom items because vanilla ones make no sense here. MANY have agreed with this. Not to say I don't respect your opinion. Your opinion is most likely what Mojang will do. And they already are immune to fire and lava. It states that the bottom of my post.
I like the shorts idea, but the whole point of them is to be in the Nether. There is no straw there, so no straw hats I'm afraid... But I DO like your suggestion. It just doesn't fit because it takes them out of the Nether.

To be honest? I'm baffled at how I didn't think of that myself. Maybe they grown on gravel, like regular sugar canes grow on sand? I guess I could throw this together if you wanted. It's interesting. Maybe they're some sort of stone plant, and the books are thin but durable reedstone pages, strung together with golden thread, Hence the gold ingot? And you'd craft them with netherbrick to get a netherbrick bookcase? Give this comment some up-votes if you want me to add this to my post.

Well, "Paper". I was going to go with stone, like, the reeds were a stone-plant. BUT, I guess if I have Nether Wheat, Nether Reeds work too. It'd be a paper like substance, but the paper would be red tinted white. More like pink, so it'd be legible.

I was planning to add the Gold Golem, but I couldn't find a texture for it. It's very difficult. And then the Gold Ore. I have no idea where, but I don't mind having to slay Pigman Zombies for it. I guess I could SUGGEST the ore.
Things to add to post now:

One thing I have to say is that instead of random gold ores around, it should be like quartz where the gold is inside netherrack and you can find it frequently. Granted, it will produce gold nuggets when smelting, but still an easy way to get gold
Well, currently, an easy way to get gold, is a dropper trap of Pigman Zombies, onto hoppers. But I DO like that suggestion. It would also explain why the Zombie Pigmen have nuggets instead of bars.

generally I like the idea of nether villages, but it seems there are some inconsistencies to work out, which is why I assume they haven't been put in to begin with

Pigman Zombies and Pigman work the same as Zombies and Villagers. No offense, but I don't get why you, and like, 5 other people can't put this together without me explaining it.

What would pigmen trade anyway? I suppose the alchemist would buy different potion ingredients and would sell potions, and the blacksmith would buy gold and sell gold tools (useless, but they would fit with the theme), just like the Overworld blacksmith buys materials and sells tools made of those materials, and the Overworld priest enchants tools. Although maybe selling potions would make brewing pointless, even considering prices. I would move the glowstone sell offer to one of them, it's just weird that the priest is selling something he doesn't have access to.
Also... Would it be rare to make them buy items from the Overworld (mainly those that villagers are selling), and perhaps do a similar thing with the villagers from the Overworld?. It would state a difference between villagers and pigmen: what ones have in excess and is being sold, it's highly valued by the others because it isn't found in their world. I think pigmen would find glass very interesting, for example, since there's no (normal) sand in the Nether,
I suppose it would depend on how rare these villages are. If they're rarer than fortresses, people will look for Nether Wart in what they find first, considering they'll have to go at some time to a fortress for a Blaze Rod anyway..
I think I wouldn't use Netherrack to build my house if I were a pigman. Netherrack is extremely fragile and, considering the Nether is full of fireball-shooting Ghasts, any house made of it can be easily destroyed. A house found in the Nether would be made of stronger materials.
Maybe hats made of Nether wheat?
because that doesn't make sense. Zombie Pigmen are not hostile mobs to begin with, and if you have a siege situation as you do with zombies, it will end in a little over a minute with the entire village empty. There is no day/night cycle in the nether, and if it were implemented there is currently no way you could track it. So the siege would begin at random times, whether you are paying attention or not. If you do try to get involved, the zombie pigmen are so much stronger than the zombies that players without full diamond equipment don't stand much of a chance. If you don't have full diamond equipment, you can't sleep in a bed to skip the night.
Looking at the current mechanics of village generation, they are only in plains and deserts because they spawn well only on flat areas, so I would assume that if nether villages are put in, they would likely be spawned on top of lava lakes. That means if you're trying to fend off a siege, you also have the wonderfully constant threat of getting knocked into the lava at any point.
The same goes for the pigmen, and while they may not be damaged by lava, they will be under it, so you can't trade with them, nor can they breed, so they may as well be dead. Even without sieges, they will wander in on their own if overworld villages are any indication.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the idea and most of the things you have come up with here, these are just technical details to think about

After all, where exactly did the overworld villagers get carrots and potatoes? For that matter, how could nether villagers create nether brick? There is no material in the nether that can power a furnace except for lava, and you can't use lava without iron buckets.

I already discussed this with another commenter. It's not EXACTLY the same. There are, of course, a few things making it possible to protect these guys.
That's a good point, about the buckets. But the busted portal came later. That was a suggestion. Anything in spoilers was added in post, and was a suggestion by one of you guys.
