well I think if you fall one block it should do the standard critical hit
but anything beyond that gives you critical bonuses (since you have to be falling to have critical damage)
so say you fall 10 blocks, maybe instantly kill that enemy? because the force of gravity would be much higher kinda like how dropping an anvil from a higher distance does more damage.
also not to mention the bug where if you turn on flying mode and then go into survival (like with toomanyitems), if you land while still in survival, all that falling(flying) distance is added up like you fall 2k blocks if you are flying for long enough, that's the concept, so when you land, it instantly kills you
well why isn't crical damage (fairly) added up in this way too?
or atleast one critical hit added up this way?
I'm not so sure about this unless I get some exact numbers of how much damage increased for each block you fall. Because with some feather falling boots this could be rather OP.

Yeah, I think this would be okay if there was a cap on the critical damage and it penalized you for having feather falling.
Solution: add goomba stomping and remove crits, damage done to the player landed on is half a heart per block fallen then half as much if wearing feather falling.
Actually that's really stupid but it sure beats jump spam crits.

I would love it if you checked out my "about me" page on my profile and looked at my threads I'm always happy to see new posters.
I'm gonna say no. Not because I think the idea is bad, but because it's pretty easy as is to constantly jump and crit-sword spam mobs.
umm this isn't making the problem worse though, it's basically allowing for assassination style killings
but I agree with some users, maybe feather falling could nerf critical damage say the boots make you not fall with as much gravity force, I hope this gets seen by mojang.
Is the idea inspired by Dishonored? I don't care if it's yes or no, I'm just curious.
Even though I don't fully support, if the idea was implemented I might find myself using it anyway.
I'd probably say it was inspired more by Assassin's Creed. I've seen a lot of suggestions for this that say "just like <hero character from the latest AC game>!"
If this was implemented as is in the OP, I would say the extra damage after the regular crit should be after 3 blocks, not 1. Bonus damage shouldn't start until the player is guaranteed to take fall damage, which is after 3 blocks iirc.
Also, no instant kills. Period. If you manage to do 20 Damage on an unarmored player because of your Enchanted Diamond Sword. a good critical hit, and a Strength Potion, that is fine. Good for you for using tools effectively to gank an unarmored player. But instant killing someone just because you fell an obscenely far distance doesn't make sense.
If you think about it, actually managing a precise jumping attack from a high height would be next to impossible, and at that height and speed, the slightest mistake of even your weapon's angle could shatter the attacker's bones like potato chips getting run over by a car.

The way I would do this would be as following.
Get the weapon being used.
Get weapon durability, initial damage starts at weapon damage and increase after 3 blocks fallen. If hit is successful, take and add a half heart per block fallen and add to the weapons overall damage, but no more then 19 half hearts should be dealt. Therefore total blocks fallen after 3 initial trigger blocks fallen minus 1.
Now, for the balacement. The blocks falled, will be applied to the weapons durability. You may think wtf, but actually once past 3 blocks, no weapon should be held up against that sort of force on it.
Basically as this. The amount of blocks fallen will be added to the -2 durability all weapons take. This makes it so you cannot just keep using that overly powered diamond sword over and over with Sharpness IV/V/III and so on.
Enchantment wise, this would primarly be a tricky part and I cannot fully think how it would go about.

you are an idiot, there's a gamemode other than SMP
I like this idea. I think that instant kills are ok IF you fall 170 blocks (guaranteed death, even with max enchanted diamond armor and resistance II potion effect).

Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.

* Unless 2 blocks of water.
Where that is kinda negated at. Unlikely yes, but imagine a PVP server with people traveling in boats, and here you have this guy camping way up in a tree somewhere or a "cloud house" that decides to jump down and nail somebody.

Oh yeah, I didn't think about that.
However, you are falling a around 80 meters per second (although a little less) then, causing you to only have a little over 1/20 of a second window to strike in, which means, more often than not, you'll miss.
