Hellow everyone, Bocaj1000 here with a new suggestion about lunar eclipses in Minecraft. Please read on.
Lunar Eclipse
Lunar eclipses have a 1/150 chance of happening everyday. After the moon sets, and sun comes up, you might see that the sun is covered by the moon, and no light expands on the ground. The moon is also a red-orange color. You better get in a base quick, or else hoards of monsters will rip you apart.
What Happens: During a lunar eclipse, the moon covers the sun, making it a light level of around 9 (A little higher than plain night). During this time, monsters spawn more, and can sense the player through walls up to 64 blocks away. But if they are farther than 64 blocks, they despawn. The monsters' purpose is to kill you. If you die, than monsters revert to their regular spawning, but the moon will still cover the sun. You cannot sleep during the lunar eclipse.
Zombies-
Zombies have increased AI and abilities. During a lunar eclipse, zombies can break down doors on normal difficulty or higher. Zombies also have increased pathfinding AI. There is a higher chance of them holding weapons and having armor. Zombies that don't have any other rare drop have a chance to be holding a ladder. Each zombie holding a ladder has five ladders. Zombies can also climb up ladders.
Skeletons-
Skeletons also have increased AI. They have new pathfinding abilities, and have an increased chance to be holding an enchanted bow or armor. Skeletons also have a greater chance to spawn on a spider, and skeletons also can get on a spider.
Creepers-
Creepers are a harder enemy too. It has increased AI, and they can sense you through walls. That means that if you stand on the opposite side of a wall than the Creeper, then it will blow up.
Spiders-
Spiders have a greater chance to spawn with a skeleton. Spiders have pathfinding AI (because they have none yet) and will go around walls if they can't go over.
Endermen-
Endermen are now hostile if you look near them not just at them. They are mostly unchanged.
Witches-
Witches now spawn around you, uncommonly. They are pretty much the same, except for increased AI (Like throwing speed potions at monsters, for example).
How to Protect Yourself:
Iron golems and snow golems now attack any mob at will. Snow golems now damage mobs. But be careful, because monsters will attack the golems too.
Thank you for reading, please post suggestions on what you think I should edit.
It's very compelling - have you considered the fact that the moon often turns red during actual lunar eclipses? I find that particularly interesting, given that a lunar eclipse would be an instance in which even /less/ light is getting to that part of the world because none of the sun's light is bouncing off the moon.
Sorry for my little geek-out. Clearly I appreciate this idea from a astronomical stance. Are the mechanics a bit rough on the player though?
It's going to be excessively hard if you haven't built a castle before a blood moon comes, and some people don't want to build castles. Maybe from Day 300 for Hard difficulty?

Although I do like the idea and if tweaked to be more balanced u have my support :')
I'd add a config to disable/enable features, change the spawn rate of a blood moon, and have an extra config to add a "buffer" time, which basically is that there's a config option which makes it impossible for a bloodmoon to spawn before X number of days.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
For backwards time travel to be possible, wouldn't every instant in the universe have to be stored somewhere, or time to be something physical you could travel through? Either way doesn't work with the current laws of physics.
I like it, but I don't. The reason that I like it, is because it would add yet another challenge for MC. I don't think that this would entirely mean that castles would fix this, but they might help. I don't like it because if im building and it turns to a blood moon night than I might be pretty mad. But overall I don't think that this should be implemented. Plus we have beds and all you have to do is sleep and there goes your 1/100 chance blood moon. :/

Whoa. There's such thing as too much customization. Players would have to decide on the settings, and only one would be seen as "legitimate."
No. There's better ways to add difficulty instead of a super-hostile mode of any form. You want improved difficulty, play without armor or otherwise. There should always be a means for players to build, and people should be able to build giant castles simply because they want to.
Also, what's to stop a player from building his castle in the sky?
well... see im not the best builder... but is this possible on creative mode? because im not going to have that much iron for defense and Im basically screwed. however... +1! I like it. 7-8 mins of hell
-stack Enderman-proof blocks to prevent Zombies from getting you-
-make it high enough so Creeper explosions cant reach the top-
-add a platform to prevent Spiders from getting you-
-add a fence/glass wall to see outside but to prevent Skeletons from shooting you-
-add a 2-high ceiling to prevent Endermen from getting you-
Congratulations, you just found an easy way to survive the blood moon.
Every night, there is a 1/100 chance that the moon will turn red, hence the name "Blood Moon." Alright, I like it.
During this Blood Moon, several things will happen. One, no monsters will despawn within 128 blocks. That could get very crowded and laggy, especially on multiplayer.
In that range also, all monsters sense you, blocks or not. So it is kind of like the Invasion Mod, except for some things. I can understand an increased mob seeing range, but 128 is WAAAAAAYYYY too much. You'll be detected by every hostile mob from miles away.
The monsters' goal is not a block you place. It's YOU. You must survive one night of zombies, skeletons, spiders, creepers, and Endermen marching toward you. Sounds like you'll get overwhelmed in a heartbeat with that 128-block radius detection.
During this night, zombies can break doors no matter what. Zombies and skeletons also have a greater chance to hold weapons or have armor. If Creepers cannot find a path to get to you, they have a 1/10 chance to blow up something you built. That last part is taking it too far. Not many players are gonna want many hostile mobs turn into even bigger trolls by just breaking their stuff. Remind me to build my house so it's floating off the ground.
How? It finds blocks blocking its path to you, and blows up. Creepers' explosions also have a chance to light a block on fire. Spiders can still climb up walls, with a greater chance to have a skeleton on its back. Endermen are all hostile, but with a slightly less chance to teleport near you. Yeah, these blood moons are gonna enrage players rather than make things fun if you make mobs troll people's buildings like that. No thanks.
Iron and snow golems will be attacked also, and iron golems also attack Creepers. Nope. No mob attacks Creepersbecause provoking them will cause a crater in places you might not want them. The Iron Golem would have to 1-hit-kill Creepers, but why would what happen only during a blood moon?

1. I dont build castles (I suck at building .-.)
2. I dont waste my iron on golems.
Im sure not all the players can build castles, or waste iron.
No support..

and how would this work in multiplayer, it would most likely crash the server and destroy the map.
