mojang,
there should be minecraft support for texturepacks texturing items based of name, so say you re-name any item (unless you will make the item matter as well) using an anvil (doesnt need to be one) and your texturepack has been made so it shows the item as something different.
ex: you want to have a texture pack that changes a sword's skin when renamed for cool effect (lets you keep old original sword).
this could help with plugins that use renamed items for things but they want the old thing to still work. so with this type of implementation you could have a plugin use a hoe renamed as a wither scythe or whatever but it couldn't hoe the floor but a regular hoe could. only problem is both would be the same texture unless this support was possible.
or you playing an adventure map and your using the item and this item goes through changes and it still looks the same which ruins the effect but with this support it would allow it be different.
2nd example: your playing an adventure map, you reach a certain level and your sword goes though a cool animation (the name during this could be "level up") and then it changes looks into something cooler.
the item would go through two name changes in your inventory to provide such effects (hopefully tool tips is on as well)
another thought occurred when i realized that this only benefited authors of minecraft projects and not regular minecraft players who want this sort of visual effect in regular gameplay.
so for all the texture-pack makers there should be support for changing an item texture based on durability and enchantment (if they want to use it or not)
anyway i thought such support would be easy to add and be even more useful for authors of minecraft projects (including texturepack makers) then it is easy to make the support
hope this is implemented as it practical for regular minecraft use and practical for minecraft projects
I don't know. Maybe a feature for different textures on items with tags like enchantments or certain potion effects, but not names. If you want texture pack features for an adventure map, just make a texture pack.
The idea of NBT-tag related custom textures is a marvelous idea and MUST be implemented, no matter what it takes! Previously I would have suggested bringing this up with the creator of optifine, but since the texturepack-reformat and all the aesthetic attention brought to vanilla minecraft I actually think that such a feature could exist in vanilla.
Yeh, it could be used in custom maps where you need to get a specific sword from a boss. The clues could read: A green sword from the hands of the dragon' or something. Adventure maps could have their emerald, silver, jade, marble, aluminium etc. swords whilst normal Minecraft wouldn't.
Maybe NBT tags can also change the power and durability.
thnx guys i only thought of this when i read up on a plugin for having guns and it supports attachements but i realized that even with the attachement it would look the same which would ruin the whole visual effect of it.
This offers no practical use to texture pack artists, only adventure map makers.
In my opinion, we should have alternate textures for items with certain ENCHANTMENTS, not names. There are millions of name possible, and the way you suggest it an iron sword called "Zombie Slayer" would look the exact same as an iron sword enchanted with 10 knockback, 10 fire aspect and 10 durability called "Zombie Slayer"
If anything Adventure Map Makers should be making their own items, not textures. It would be much more customizable and less able to do something silly like renaming a normal sword and BOOM it's completely different.

well that's why in my post i first thought new textures only for names to satisfy map makers, plugin makers, etc. at some point in the post i really thought how this would impact everyone (meaning texture-pack makers themselves) so i thought there should be more variables that can trigger such change in look but still is the same thing.
so almost at the end of my post i recommended both names and enchantments (thought i really meant any change) would allow anyone to change what ever the item looked like.
though the enchantment thing is kinda limited as it only applies to tools (well in vanilla anyway)
Actually, in vanilla you can enchant any item with a book of enchanting, anvil and item.
oh yeah that right
well i hope you changed your mind i mean such support of this feature could let everyone do what they want with how things are textured once changed in the tiniest way for HUGE effects and implementations (for visual effects obviously).
also i like your nemo texture pack and the resticher looks neat
Thanks, but I still don't like the naming thing. There's just too many possibilities that would make most texture artists just ignore it, leaving adventure map makers who often have no experience to create them.
I beleive it would STILL be useful to adventure maps if it was enchantments, for example a diamond sword with fire aspect would work for MANY adventure maps and could be named whatever you like!

wait i just realized that having an enchantment would make it glow (some authors of minecraft project might not want that)
well i understand your reasoning but for the adventure map creators who do know can use it and if they don't know how then they will have to find someone who can.
i mean what you said sounds like saying if someone who just started playing minecraft wanted to give it a new look but they couldn't make a texture-pack. i know that the only difference is that there are so many out there the guy could find what he was thinking of, while the adventure map creator couldn't look off the internet for a texturepack that used the names he used.
so i mean why not have both features just for making everybody happy which is what im trying to say.

In fact, if the names are stored in the actual block, it would be very easy to make new tree types, flower types etc.!
Support
I support this!

so yeah keep posting on your thoughts guys
Also, here is an awesome suggestion I had: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1745550-biome-effects/
I take it you've never heard of a language pack.Oh, I see. Sounds cool. This offers no practical use to texture pack artists, only adventure map makers.
