Why not use the InventoryTweaks idea, that when you run out of something and you have another one in your inventory, it'll get replaced instantly. So your sword breaks, but you have another sword, so it immediately gets replaced. But it should be optional though.
Because that's a mod.
Support. I like gold swords in PvP but they all break.

I have discovered a truly remarkable proof of this, which this margin is too small to contain.

Yes, I like the idea of the feature but clicking a gray error is essentially the same as opening the inventory and shift-clicking whatever item.
Adding to your feature, there should be an toggle-able option which turns on / off automatic inventory updates, which basically is your feature but without clicking the gray error. The items automatically just shift down if the setting is set to true, or on.

Well, I said triangle, not error. And the triangle is the button for turning the feature on or off, not for each individual downward shift.
Great idea, this would be a real time-saver and I think the "toggling" part is a nice touch for if I want to dump a bucket then collect it again (for tall grass clearing etc) I still have the option of not having to go back into my inv. to get the bucket back. Simple but well thought out.
Not enugh items changed in resent (well resent to me i've not messed with minecraft for a while and it's 1.2.5 NEI lol) updates....
If you should use or run out of an item it will replace it with a similar one. (you eat your last pice of meat it will give you a pice of bread... or your dimond sword brakes it will give you an iron one)
If you pick up something it won't put it into the quick slots automatically.
I think those two options should be part of the main game.

If it were implemented, you wouldn't have to use it.

O.K. understand your feature better.
I didn't say 'error' ?
Also, try to segment the idea instead of packing it all into one space. I would normally make a bigger deal of this but I absolutely love the idea.
