So, as most of you probably know, 1.3.1 brought about a Bonus Chest option (disabled for Hardcore). Now, while this is pretty good, it's not very resource ridden and isn't really going to help you much, it just saves you maybe a minute or two of work. So let me introduce to you my suggestion... the Bonus HOUSE.
The Bonus House is a nice house to help you get started. It contains basic things... a roof over your head, a chest of goodies, a furnace and a crafting table, 2 paintings, and a total of 8 torches, 4 inside and 4 out, to help keep you warm as a zombie attempts to punch his way through your solid wood door into your brand spankin' new house so that he can maul you to death, marring your experience completely as you respawn right where he's standing just to be mauled to death again and again until you quit the game forever and move on to WoW! (Okay, maybe not.)
Pictures of the House:
Front of the house...
...now the back...
... and inside.
Inside the Furnace and Chest:
The furnace contains 8 coal, enough to smelt a stack of whatever the hell you toss in.
The chest contains a variety of useful things:
- Full Leather Armor, each piece enchanted with Protection I
- Wooden Pick, Axe, and Shovel; all enchanted with Efficiency I.
- Wooden Sword, enchanted with Sharpness I.
- Wooden Hoe.
- Bow enchanted with Power I and 16 arrows.
- 16 Wood and 16 Cobblestone, to get you going tool-wise.
- 3 Saplings and 3 Seeds, to get you going on farming.
- Fishing Rod, essential to start your food collecting. No matter your spawn, water is never too far.
- A compass, so that you are never lost on the trek back home.
- 3 Steak, just to get you started on food.

Someone tell Jeb to fix this.
This would also require the GUI in the world create menu to be changed to something like "Starter Bonus", with 3 settings. First off, None. Second, Chest, incase any true noobs out there still love the golden girl. And of course, the third and final, House; which like chest, is disabled on Hardcore. But you're not going to play on hardcore, because you want this sexy house. You love the house. Who doesn't love the house? I know you love it, which is why you're now going to post about how much you love Bonus House. BONUS HOUSE FOR PRESIDENT.
This house is so awesome I can't help but support it.
I could care less about the enchantments, simply because any enchantments on the easiest to get tools won't make them much better. Leather armor only gives you 3.5 armor points (a point blank creeper explosion would probably still kill you), and I never make any wooden tools other than a pickaxe, because after I make a stone pickaxe I can easily get a half-stack of cobblestone by the time the sun sets. These enchantments basically make the tools you can get from the house half broken stone tools.
P.s. the first thing I'd do when I encounter this house is rip up part of the floor to make a bed.
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 99% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 1% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens.
No I will not +1 you unless you say something worth +1ing. Respect is earned, not given.
This is an AWFUL suggestion; I don't know how everyone is bandwagoning saying it's a good idea.
This removes the whole purpose of the first night, and not to mention it's SO OVERPOWERED by the enchantments.
(Even if it's only level I enchantments, it's still very powerful. It might not seem like it, but if you compare the two in game, you will notice a HUGE difference.)
The Bonus Chest's purpose is to either get you started faster, or for first-time noobies that have just started playing the game, to get them a basic glimpse at some of the items and such.
Not to ruin the whole purpose of the survival aspect of minecraft.
Edit: Also, you tried too hard to be funny.
A little bit of humor is always great to support your topic, but too much ruins it.

As of the recent update, a point blank creeper on hard can kill you even with full iron and bring you down to 2 hearts in diamond. Leather Armor with Protection I no matter the difficulty isn't OP at all, I don't know why people are saying it is. Also, the house isn't big enough for a bed, which was kind of the point... it's just sort of a nice house to get you through night one safely. Spend Day 1 getting supplies, hide out preparing for the next day during Night 1, and during Day 2, build a slightly bigger house, and go onwards from there.
I wanted to give the player a bit of insight into the game without having to spend hours on the wikia, and small enchantments are part of that.
Sure, it's a nudge in the right direction, but what will they do when their supplies run out? Consult the wiki?
Imo, if you want to keep people from spending hours on the wiki, just let people start out with a book that gives them all the information they need to survive.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
This is not a good idea. As said before, there is no need to have a pre-built house for the player. Completely removes the challenge of finding shelter on your first night in the game. We all went through it and it shouldn't be something that is taken away from new players. Having a bonus chest that was introduced in this most recent update is more than enough to make the first night a breeze by already giving the player an ax and pickax and some basic building supplies, food, plus torches.

Chances are, a new player will not be playing on Hard difficulty so this is not an issue. Even if they get hit and killed by a creeper, that is part of the game! Absolutely no need for armor, let alone enchanted armor on the first night. And the house is big enough for a bed actually...look at your pictures.

A 3x3 interior with 1x3 of the 3x3 already taken up doesn't seem big enough. Seems to spawn the occasional zombie here and there.
Anyways, it's a bit of a two-sided street as to whether it takes away from the experience. Most people, day one, are not going to be screwing around with settings they don't even know what they do yet, they're going to jump right in. That's what I did, that's what (most) of the people I know did. Get right into the game and learn the finer points later.
And as for it affecting a more veteran player (not something you mentioned, but something I want to address), IMHO it's still no different than someone using a specific seed for a singleplayer or even multiplayer world.
Sure, it's a nudge in the right direction, but what will they do when their supplies run out? Consult the wiki?
Imo, if you want to keep people from spending hours on the wiki, just let people start out with a book that gives them all the information they need to survive.
You can only write up to 50 pages in a book. Even for beginners, 50 pages in nowhere near enough.
And even if they don't know the finer points of enchanting and such like that, the fact that items like that exist points them in the right direction. As of right now there's no other way to know enchanting exists besides experience and villager trading.
These are the types of topics that are just so tedious to respond to because there are so many things you say that are misinformed or wrong.
A 3x3 interior with 1x3 of the 3x3 already taken up doesn't seem big enough. Seems to spawn the occasional zombie here and there.
I don't think you understand what you are saying. A 3x3 interior with 1x3 already used leaves a 2x3 section. Do you know how big a bed is? It is 1x2. so you could actually fit 3 beds into the house if you had the materials.

Exactly, and if i remember correctly, the default difficulty is not Hard. Part of "get[ting] right into the game" is surviving your first night on your own and learning everything, on your own. We don't need to coddle new players by handing them everything they need.
You can only write up to 50 pages in a book. Even for beginners, 50 pages in nowhere near enough.
50 pages would be MORE than enough to tell a player the very basics of the game and to even give them hints at certain advanced parts of the game (enchanting, brewing, etc).
As of right now there's no other way to know enchanting exists besides experience and villager trading.
Do you think that a brand new player that has never heard of minecraft until trying it will understand what an enchantment is just by seeing an item that is enchanted? If the players you are trying to help out are as uneducated about minecraft as you are expecting, then seeing a piece of armor with a Protection I on it will be just as confusing as anything else. The wiki or some source of info will have to be consulted at some point regardless. Heck, I have been playing for over a year and a half and I still check it for things.

I'm aware it's *large enough* for a bed. My point is if the bed is up against a wall sometimes, a zombie will spawn when you try to sleep in it.
And you missed my point about players not fooling around with the settings their first time in Minecraft. They're not going to be doing that, meaning they're more than likely NOT going to turn on the bonus house. They won't know what it does until they try it, and they aren't going to be doing that the first time they play Minecraft, thus, their first experience will NOT be ruined. They won't be handed anything because they won't be screwing around with settings the first time they play and won't be using it the first time they play.
I'm aware it's *large enough* for a bed. My point is if the bed is up against a wall sometimes, a zombie will spawn when you try to sleep in it.
Then you should say that it is large enough instead of saying it isn't....and anyway, this doesn't happen anymore in the full release, and hasn't happened since the Beta version. Now you can't sleep if you are within like 10 blocks of an enemy.
If they aren't going to use it the first time they play, then why would these even be useful? After you play once you generally know how to survive on night one without any issues. You are basically making your idea useless with that statement.
Not really:
Protection turns damage into armor damage, meaning the armor dies faster. Sharpness I and Power I don't do much to help, especially when it's on a wooden sword and you have naught but 16 arrows at the time. The efficiency enchantments only give a slight boost to speed; you still only have 60 uses.
Enchantments are HUGE in the game.
Protection I is enough to protect the player a WHOLE LOT more than no enchants at all.
Sharpness I deals wooden sword will deal 3.5 hearts of damage instead of 2, so the 3 hits to kill can save your life compared to 5 hits to kill.
Power I deals 150% more damage than an unenchanted bow, which means you can snipe a mob with two hits instead of three.
And give yourself an Efficiency I wooden pick and a normal one, then compare the two.
You WILL notice a huge difference.
Also, the bonus house gives you pretty much everything you need to survive for a whole lot, including a source of wood, fully enchanted wood tools and leather armor, free coal and cobblestone (you don't have to mine anything at all), more than enough wool for a bed, food right off the bat, etc.
It ruins the survival aspect and scavenging for supplies.
I have no idea how you thought these items were just "basic things" "just to get you started".
Anyone could agree that these items are all very overpowered, and would spoil the first experience of minecraft.
Completely terrible idea. At least with the enchantments. Tone it down a little. You get a wooden pick and a wooden axe. Then you get one coal. Maybe a leather hat. That's it. That's all you need really.
Okay. I became to intrigued into this so I decided to show my Ideas (and my creative building). So I decided for all the different biomes one thing must remain the same in all of them. They all must have one furnace, one crafting table, four torches, one chest with very skim supplies, one door/enterance, and must all have 13 blocks of interior space not taken by the previous items mentioned.
So I started with Tundra (Snow without trees) and Taiga (Snow with trees) because I figured that the houses would obviously be similar. The first though I had was it had to have snow blocks in it because it was a snowy biome. However, I did not like the idea of a pure snow house or an igloo. So the creation evolved into this:
This is the front side of the house.
This is the back side.
Now this is the interior of the house with exactly 13 free spaces.
Now it was time to move on the the next house type, the plains house type. I thought since most plains don't have many trees it would be a dirt house since it would be the only block available, It also didn't occur to me until now that it does have a rather clever camouflage to it:
The front of the plains house (Sorry for night time).
The back view of the house
The inside of the house!
Next was the forest house. The house is primarily made of Oak log, Oak Wood, and Birch Wood. The house also had a wooden floor.
The Front View.
The back of the House.
The inside of the house.
The next house was for a desert house and I used the same idea as I had for my plains house.
This is the front of the house.
This is the back of the house.
This is the inside of the house (Sorry for bad view there is a disadvantage from its shape).
The next Biome is Hills/Extreme Hills. I though a house build into the stone sounded good:
The Front of the house (being built into a mountain there is no "Back").
And here is the inside of the house.
The next house is a swamp house. I thought it would make since to mix wood with dirt. (sorry I had to build it in plains biome)
The front of the swamp house.
The back of the house.
The inside of the House.
Finally, I needed to do the jungle house. This one I probably put most creativity into. (again sorry I didn't have it in right biome)
The front of the house.
The back of the house.
The Inside of the house (sorry for the smoke blocking the view)
Finally, An image of what each chest will contain.
Yes I think this would work in the game, just as long as it is not too over powered. Let me hear your opinion!
The bonus chests gives you food, a few tools, and wooden material.Pretty good for newbs, but doesnt give them too much of a head start. Pretty good. A bonus house gives you shelter, a furnace, enchanted armor and weapons. This is way too OP and stupid. Don't tell me the enchanted tools and armor are wooden or leather to 'Balance it out'. Enchantments for tools are expensive upgrades for great adventures. Now your throwing them away newbs. Reminder, it takes 5 diamonds (3 for the pick) and 5 obsidian to make an enchantment table. Dont throw enchantments away. Its useless and takes away the SURVIVAL part of SURVIVAL mode.
