What, do you have an electric heater in your shoe that melts snow as you step on it?
I think a much better way to incorporate foorprints into the game is to plop a particle onto snow every time you step on it, and the particle would last 2-3 minutes before fading away. Footprints should not significantly alter anything and should be purely aesthetic.

Why would it turn to dirt? It still has grass under it. Even then, I don't like the idea because it would be ugly and ****. I'd rather have tiny square footprints that are created in dirt, sand, snow, etc. So on PvP servers you can track someone down, or you can track farm animals down that you want for your farm, and so on.

It's hard criticizing ideas when one is tired, so you'd better appreciate it when I criticize yours.
The thread title says "Footprints through snow?" but the suggestion is "walking on snow makes it disappear unless you crouch". Which is a horrible idea by the way. There's no reason for that to happen. I would've supported the idea if it was actually about footprints.
Also, you don't have to type with large text. It will not change how your suggestion is viewed.
When this first popped up, I thought, "Yay, a use for the footprint.png image"
But no, for a two reasons, this is bad:
Walking on farmland has no affect, jumping on it reverts it back to dirt.
I don't want to leave an ugly trail behind in the snow just because I'm walking.
I'd have been fine if walking on snow left little footprints that disappeared very quickly, but walking on snow shouldn't destroy it.
I like this idea. I think that, like arrows, footprints should disappear (I think) in one minute. I also think that different mobs should make different foot steps. Like a creeper would have square footsteps. Also, when it is snowing, the footsteps should go away in 20-30 seconds, because the snow would cover it up.
when you crouch and walk it stays. It is just like a farm. When you walk through it,
some of the ground becomes unfertilized dirt I guess you could say. But, when you
crouch, it stays fertile.
