Wow after a whole year I find this idea again.
I think I support now. Since this would allow fortune to be used on the ores, and for Silk Touch to have more obtainable blocks, the idea would add more advancement in the current gameplay. Not to mention you changed their texture from charcoal.
I'm a bit 50/50 on this. The idea is nice and it makes sense, but gold and iron ore dropping the blocks is how it's been ever since they got added so I don't know if I would like such a change.
Don't forget that poppies have replaced roses, which have been in the game for a really long time, too.
I think it would be super interesting to have all minerals drop in a more earthy texture like the ones provided in this suggestion and then have them all need to be smelted to purify them (except for coal of course because that would be stupid). I think that would add to the adventure of the game. Of course everyone is going to say this extremely tedious lol which it totally would be but interesting nonetheless. Anyway, rambling musings aside, I support your idea.
Sorry but no support. Iron is extremely common as it is and the XP gained while smelting it is already abundant. Gold isn't used in many crafting recipes so being able to get even more of it at the moment would fill unnecessary space in my inventory and chests. And as Syntheosis said:
That is their choice.
If I choose to not use cheap wheat farms can I complain about not being able to breed cows with carrots?
But even without grinders iron is very common and gold is meant to be rare.
All the guy's suggesting is the ability to use fortune because currently you can't. He's not suggesting making iron and gold more common. I don't see anything wrong with this.

Allowing fortune on iron/gold is almost the same as iron/gold being more common, if you have a fortune pick you are going to get more of them, and combined with enchanting being insanely cheap in 1.8 most players are going to have a fortune pick.

Except, iron and gold isn't what people would hunt for with Fortune anyway. Most players would search for diamond and coal.
I would prefer a new enchantment that smelts the iron and gold upon mining (however, no XP is produced). You would combine that and a fortune pickaxe, you would then receive multiple drops from a single ore.
well, it will make building beacon pyramids much, much more easier due to the fortune enchantment, but I don't really see how that's a problem (considering how hard it is to make one in the first place).

So? Dont decide what needs to be "fixed", because no one else cares about this to be honest.
Iron is already super common. (And farmable with iron farms)
And gold should be rare (And it is also farmable with gold farms)
Praise be to Spode.
You have a good chunk of my Support.
