Ace, now that I know what u want, I totally agree. I've been hicking, and seen lots of beutifal things, like mountains in Arkansas, waterfalls in califona, and deserts in Arizona. Each feature was far apart, and different, I would like to see some of that in minecraft.
Snapshot 12w21a reverted the smoothing of the more jagged parts of the extreme hills generator. Take a look:
(Cross post from 12w21a discussion) The terrain in Extreme Hills has been reverted a bit. Someone more familiar with the pre-1.8 days can weigh in and share whether this is addressing all the noise about bland geography?

I seriously agree with this topic, it's telling that I have to download user maps to really get something worth exploring. I mean I don't expect the base game to do things like Chamber of the Creators or Vechs' maps but now it feels bland. Sometime you may get lucky but it's so rare to find anything of interest post 1.8. It's true, you find one cave and you can pretty much follow it for hours and hours and you are almost 100% guaranteed to hit the diamond layer and everything it seems.
Now, people who have watched some of my series know I am a huge scaredy cat and always say I do not play MC myself on anything but peaceful (my series are pretty much all SMP) because I love the exploration... ever since 1.8 exploration has become 'finding villages' for the most part because finding massive overhangs or truly awesome looking natural formations is now so very difficult.

Mystic's Universe -- Minecraft, Mass Effect, Skyrim, Game Reviews and more --
It's funny at the end of your post you ask for our trust yet you have the audacity to insult myself and many others? My so called "entourage" and myself make up about 3/4ths the Minecraft population and not once did I or any of them state that there were no good seeds in this thread. I may have stated a couple of times that the seeds are pointless as every map is the same, but I also went on to say that "yes this may be over exaggerated but.. -insert explanation here-".
I am sure that my "entourage" and myself would agree that it is very possible to have some neat seeds in the modern terrain, but there is a very slim chance as (you just proved) most players who claimed to have found such a marvelous seed always fail to bring forth the evidence whether it be screenshot or the seed itself. I am sure that is it possible to get some cool terrains with the current map generation but it is unlikely. And when you do, still they cannot compare to pre 1.8.
You are entitled to your opinion as am I. I will not insult your opinion as I'm sure that map was good enough to live up to your standards. But I expect the same in return as this thread may be my opinion, but you still have no right to insult me or others who agree with me. Good day, sir.
Wow, take a second and chill out there killer. I didn't mean to insult but I obviously offended you so I would like to apologize. Should I have worded it differnetly. Maybe saying "friends" instead of "entourage"?
But onto the point about the screenshots. I don't normally keep screenshots of everything I do on minecraft. It's not like Im gonna goto a minecraft court and plea my case. The whole purpose of my original message was to state that there are a lot of great seeds out there and Jeb didn't change the generator to make shitty worlds. He made them have more structure, yes, but that doesn't mean every world is exactly the same. Granted that the jungles make some worlds look similar but I don't exactly agree with your post and I'm expressing my opinion. There isn't need for hate and again, If I insulted you or your "friends" then I apologize as I did not mean to.
I miss trying to find ways to scale the Burtonesque formations of mountains. However, the thing I miss the most: TALL mountains. Now we even have 256 in height, instead of 128! Imagine; finding a mountain in which you almost can't see its snowy peak, then scaling it; and building your own majestic castle atop it. With a long view distance, you would truly feel like a king in his castle up there.
Combined with some new features like hardcore mode and large biomes, the struggle for survival in a wild and huge world would be as close to complete as I can currently imagine.
Please, if anything, Mojang; at least make elevation of the surface a lot more diverse than it is now. The difference between a Superflat world and a regular one is way too small.
I just thought I'd mention this, but get the newest prerelease, make a world, set the world type to Large Biome, and look around. The first world I generated, my jaw hit the ground. Also, that top #8 seeds video had horrible seeds. Try finding a better one and comparing those.
i agree with this! [though i got a little "oh another preachy speech" near the last few paragraphs xD sorry]
but still i really like those insane over hangs and above water level caves under mountains, such beauty should not be forgotten.
i nearly forgot about the old world generation...untill i played MC xbla, its so...nostalgic playing in those worlds of 1.6 beta
i think...the new ,more concentrated, biome's have made it less random, its like...they pulled out the mountains and made it it's own biome "extreme hills" but even still...it isnt the same :[
dont get me wrong, i "like" the jungle biome, to an extent that it ISNT found every 3 chunks away =_=
and those forests....they are SO dense i'd rather go to a plains biome and plant my own trees
and the new world generation "giant biomes" sure =/ but a 50 chunk super dense forest? a JUNGLE??? probably one of the hardest to travel through imho
i doubt even extreme hill biomes in the larger biomes world generation is as awe-inspiring as the old world generation
yeh.. then were shocked to realise....dissapointment. nothing.. naught but extreme hills exclusive at 200-so mountain height
They haven't changed anything in regards to the terrain generation since the new height limit was added so don't worry about it yet. What I meant was, since the height limit was increased, the above-ground terrain generation is probably going to change in the future so don't worry about it.
There is a testimonial-type section below the original text. It is labeled "Our Supporters" if this is what you mean? If not could you please specify what it is you're talking about?
I'm talking about your first post where you go into a bit of depth about wild terrain, but it would be awesome if you just added a bit more what you're looking for, like more mountains that are sometimes completely caved through to almost have like a floating island (those were awesome!) stuff like that. You have a generalization of what you want, but just a bit more and it's ace!
How about a option for the seed generator for old and new? I like old and new and you have a good point old chap. I agree.
How about improving the current generator to be up to par with 1.7's level of diversity? You'd still have everything you have now (except for the forced repetition) and MORE.
EVERY seed showcase is this:
"Over here is an NPC village, and you can get some wheat here. If you drop into this ravine here you'll find diamonds and it will rbanch off into 3 more ravines. Also there is a dungeon and abandoned mineshaft. And over here is a strong hold, with a library to make it easier to enchant, and a portal to get to the end....." I don't give a crap if there was pentouple dungeon in a ravine with 25 branching ravines. IT'S ALL THE FRICKIN SAME. My 1.6.6 seed (idoncare) had this huger valley of overhangs with a double dungeon, and this huge crater that dropped down into a huge swiss cheese cave. Look at Cupquake's 1.8 seed for her lp. It has frikcing floating mountains everywhere. RAVINES AREN'T AWESOME. . They're the same every single time. Generated structures aren't awesome. It was awe inspiring to find a ravine/river type gen pre 1.8. Now there's one every two inches, and it's basically pre generated. The biomes are flat, and don't even get me started on the "Extreme Hills". If that wasn't good, Jungles spawn every 2 blocks. I mean seriously, they're pretty cool but it's the same still.

i agree.95% of the showcases i see show an npc village next to a jungle and ravine with a abandon mineshaft, and sometimes a dungeon or stronghold its alawys the same!

You forgot the Mushroom biome and the village & dungeon chest loot.
My point is, I think that the terrain generation has been changing in the right direction. Stating again what I wrote earlier, the height limit has changed, so one can expect dramatic changes to the terrain generation. From a certain point of view, Mojang has created a good "base" from which the terrain generation can be modified and improved. Maybe they'll bring back tree covered hills and waterfalls and this time those features may be even better that they were before. Maybe they'll make the swamp biomes more interesting. Who knows what they might add?
I agree the terrain generation might be headed in the right direction for all we know this recent "terrain tweak" may have been a step in the right direction for Mojang but I guess only time will tell. I don't want you to be confused and think that I am asking for the 1.7 map generator back. I am not. I am simply saying that I could like some of the features from the 1.7 map gen to be implemented into the current terrain builder as I, and many others, would like to see more height variation and less caves on our maps. I apologize if that was unclear to you. We are not against the current terrain gen - we are only for tweaking it a bit!
Wow, take a second and chill out there killer. I didn't mean to insult but I obviously offended you so I would like to apologize. Should I have worded it differnetly. Maybe saying "friends" instead of "entourage"?

I did not mean to come across as hostile either. I do respect your opinion. I am not necessarily saying that you have to screenshot every single adventure you take in minecraft or every single amazing land form that you discover but to make a valid argument to support your side of one cause you would need to provide some type of proof.
I see what you're saying with the whole Minecraft court analogy - but that is the whole point of this thread. It doesn't mean that you must have had the screenshots beforehand, but after reading the thread at least taking 5 minutes of your time to go in-game and capture a screenshot would show that you are dedicated and taking initiavtive to support your side of the debate. You failed to do so, and that was all I was saying. And yes your first post did come off as offensive - and if I read it wrong then I apologize.. and your apology is accepted
I understand Jeb didn't change the generator to make the terrain generation dull and boring - but honestly a lot of us from pre 1.8 did not join Minecraft for "realistic" maps which is what we have now. I agree the realistic aspect of the current Minecraft maps are amazing because I love them personally. I just feel we could use more height variation and less cave systems as most of them seem never ending. I'm not saying bring back the jumbled together land masses and floating islands of sand as I agree with you those can become eye sores - I just think more variation in height (not only for the extreme hills biome but for all biomes alike!) would be a good feature to have with the current gen.
I just thought I'd mention this, but get the newest prerelease, make a world, set the world type to Large Biome, and look around. The first world I generated, my jaw hit the ground. Also, that top #8 seeds video had horrible seeds. Try finding a better one and comparing those.
That's the sad part: these were the best I could find!
There have been many threads like this before.. And OP is acting like a douche too. You (op), was asking for pics to prove you wrong, and when Lassen posted some you said to him that his pics weren't good enough. What? For me they made clear that tehere are still cool seeds, that aren't half covered in ocean.
And BTW it doesn't help taking you more seriously when you put smiley faces in your posts and in the end of posts you say something like this : Good Day to you, sir...
I am sorry if you feel this way. I had a bit of trouble understanding your post - I am not meaning to be a "douche" I am only passionately fighting my side of a cause that I feel very strongly about. If you feel this makes me a jerk, then so be it that is your opinion of me and I will not lose a wink of sleep over it. There may have been threads about the map generation being boring but not one about why this would render seeds being useless therefore my thread is unique and is a topic of its own. I was not meaning to be hostile toward Lassen either, he just simply could have approached with his argument in a more mature and adult manner rather then coming in screaming "Nope you're wrong OMGLAWLZWOWZNOWRONG!" I admit one or two of his pics are interested to look at, but I also must state that none of them are in any way proving to myself or anyone else who agrees with me that the current terrain generation has any of the features that we are wanting (i.e. height variation, rarer cave systems, and fewer NPC villages).
As for the smileys - I could care less what you think I'm just a friendly person and some jerk on the forums isn't going to change that. I, too, find it hard to take you seriously with the username "santapig" I can't help but picture a Minecraft mob in a santa hat... And with that I bid you a due, kind sir
EDIT: ----
He also failed to produce a seed for the map which he displayed screenshots of - and what are we supposed to do just take his word for it? For all we know all of those land masses he could have just world edited himself. I guess I should have made it more clear in my first post that along with the screenshots you should also post your proof by posting the seed and coordinates so that we know you did not world edit these terrains yourself. We aren't just going to trust you like that. You should learn how the forums work
