I am suggesting craftable ores. THERE IS A PICTURE BELOW SHOWING THE UNIVERSAL RECIPE.
To craft different ores, use different materials in place of coal. Is this a good Idea? I'm sorry about the weird four too. I couldn't find a real minecraft 4.
This may possibly be exploitable with lapis and redstone, as those drop more than 1 item per ore. This would be especially true with Fortune-enchanted pickaxes. This could even be exploited with DIAMONDS if you have a Fortune pickaxe (coal would be exploitable as well with this, but it wouldn't be nearly as bad as diamonds).

I wouldn't shoot this down because silk touch exists. I say it should be more expensive than silk touch. Each recipe should make only 1 block.
The problem with using silk touch as an argument against it is that that particular enchantment is so rare.
I like it, but that would make infinite redstone dust and lapis lazuli. Infinite diamonds or coal would be impossible since the fortune enchantment (level 3, highest level) only gives a maximum of 4 times the normal amount.

Maybe Lapis and Redstone recipes should result in only one ore. But the rest is balanced, 1 coal from 1 coal ore is almost always the result. So, it shouldn't be very expensive. And there is coal already going into smelting the cobble... so it is more expensive than it seems.
Didn't I suggest this before? In my thread, it would take one stone and the max amount of material an ore can produce. For coal, gold, and diamond it would be 1 item and 1 stone anywhere. Iron, since it is oxide pieces while in the stone, is one water bucket, one iron ingot, and one stone, returning the bucket. Redstone ore is one stone and 5 redstone and lapis ore is one stone surrounded by 8 lapis.

If anyone wants to port/remake this, feel free to do that! Or don't. It's up to you, really.

A thought occurs. The recipe requires four of the material (coal, iron, etc.). If you used this to create redstone or lapis, even getting only one ore block, you could rebreak it and get far more than you put in. Redstone ore breaks into a whole bunch of the stuff. Same for lapis.
Perhaps this method should provide a "crafted ore" item that drops no ore when broken.

Through the darkness of future past, the magician longs to see.
One chants out between two worlds: "Fire - Walk with me."

That sounds like a reasonable compromise. And you mean "drops no minerals," not "drops no ore" when broken. When broken, they would just drop the cosmetic ore block again so that they cannot be farmed.

This would allow duplication via the fortune enchantment. There also isn't a reason for this, ore blocks are one of the luxuries of silk touch, and should stay that way.

Cooper just suggested that they don't drop minerals when broken, only an ore again. This means that breaking a manufactured redstone ore, for example, would give you a manufactured redstone ore instead of redstone dusts. And silk touch is utterly pathetic right now. You can't even harvest glass with it.

Yeah, it seams like they checked through all of the blocks that silk touch were the most useful on, and disabled them. At least silk touch still works on glass and redstone ore.

Needs some balance.
this man is dropping some serious knowledge
You raise a good point. +1 for you, my good sir.

Well then, maybe, one of those recipes for redstone makes one redstone ore?
Hello World!
A much better balance, I think. Players could create ores earlier on but at the cost of greater resources...Trade-off, compromise...I like it.

I have addressed that problem here.
But that aside, rarity is sort of the point. It isn't supposed to be a common thing.
