I've been wanting to see bamboo in minecraft for a long time. This is a well developed topic - great job. Since I create maps with themed architecture/environments a bamboo forest would be great. Having to rely on tall sugar cane will have to do for now.
Its true that texture packs can re-invent sugar cane to ~look~ like bamboo, but having the real thing as a solid is more substantial. I would like it as a building material and for aesthetics. Tall, thickness of fence or stone fence post, non-connecting to adjacent blocks, some foliage, yep!
That's as racist as saying "Bears are Black. Trust me, I'm Russian." or "Bulls have sharp horns. Trust me, I'm Spanish" Bears, Bulls, and Bamboo all exist in on multiple continents around the world. Even if you've seen them all your life, there are many varieties of the species. Most Bamboo when cured does turn the stereotypical yellow. But the texture for it growing in the ground as a live plant should be green because most pictures of Uncured Bamboo I see are green. Unless you work at a nursery and have experience as a botanist, I'm inclined to believe Wikipedia and my own personal expereience.
2) Bamboo shouldn't be solid, it should just behave like spiderwebs (except not be washed away)
Having it be solid is the whole point of making it different from Sugar Cane. If we are to justify two visually similar plants in the game behaving differently, we need to make them look and act differently. Not requiring adjacent water to grow, growing to a taller height, growing in a different biome, looking different, being crafted into different things, and not being able to walk through them are all part of this goal.
Blow darts could be crafted too! Also pipes for water?
Blow darts were a novel idea, but many people wanted them to be poison blow darts. Any way I came up with to poison the blow darts meant there was a chance you could get poison blow darts earlier than diamond weapons and enchantments. This didn't seem balanced to me.
Pipes for water never really made sense to me. The only reason you would have such a thing is aesthetics or perhaps if you are trying to transport drops in the water, which now that we are getting advanced devices like better storage mine carts and the Allocator Block in the Redstone update.
I feel like this would definetly be an intresting thing to add as you could possibly also make potions with it as well. And with adding emerald and making it more common in extreme hills is a sign that biomes specialties are being added.
Two things:
1) Bamboo is light yellow (Trust me, I'm asian)
2) Bamboo shouldn't be solid, it should just behave like spiderwebs (except not be washed away)
Allowing for a little topic deviation; Cherry blossom trees traditionally occur in the same geographic locations as bamboo, but unless I'm mistaken their biomes in real life are very different. If both were added, I feel they would have to exist in separate biomes. Of course players can artificially cultivate them in the same area.
This is Probably the worst suggestion on the fourms yet. Sugar canes are in the game and that is enough. it would be an okay mod tho.
Wow, I was going to completely disagree with you, but you had an outstanding counter arguement.
But still, the way that you started this thread makes me think that this should just become a mod. Not everyone would be happy with this feature, but for those who may, they may want to download a mod.
Conclusion: They should just make this a mod, and keep it as a mod. Not really supporting, sorry.
This seems more likely to become a mod because plain and simple this is really essential to minecraft. Being a builder i'm happy about the decoration part of it but if I wanted more things to build with I would download a mod because, frankly, I don't like all these near useless items getting in the way of my survival. All though I do support the mat idea that keeps you from taking unarmed damage, that could add nice element to multi-player.

Not even the Scafolding? Now that fireworks are no longer relevant, that's the biggest selling point in my opinion. It's completly a Survival Mode item; allowing players who are unable to fly a quick an easy way to put up and climb blocks to finish that Sistine Chapel ceiling while at the same time be very easy to tear down again by hand. The only cost for this convinece is seeking out and growing bamboo as well as collecting string or vines to craft it.
Essential, not really, but I did make a conserted effort to include as many utility and useful features with each idea as possible. Yes, Bamboo is asthetically pleasing and most of the ideas have asthetic elements, but that dosn't make it a Fru-Fru Fungswai Good Vibes block.
I'm waiting for a relevant opportunity to gain support again. I have not given up and I won't settle for a mod (except for perhaps a demonstration of how it would fit in vanilla Minecraft).

I hope this works out.

No. Majority of bamboo is green. My proof? http://goo.gl/FHrk0
OP, just fyi lucky bamboo are not bamboo but Lily family of plants. http://www.chiff.com/a/lucky-bamboo.htm
Otherwise I like this idea. Supported!
Didn't know that... that makes me slightly less attached to my potted plant now...
Kind of got side tracked this Winter break. The thread may be old but I have not abbanoded it.

This is Probably the most inaccurate and insulting response on this thread yet. it will probably not get taken seriously tho.

Game designer, forum stalker.

I heavily support the idea of bamboo being added into Minecraft.
