But you would still need a way to save what texture it is using while it is loaded. Although I guess those 2 bits per block would only be needed in loaded chunks, but that would be 131072 bits per chunk (assuming that all of the blocks have at least 3 possible textures).
and that would probably decrease performance, that's your point?
I think this would be really neat it they implemented it into the game. I do get a bit bored of finding the same coal ore, same Netherrack, same rain, and so on .

"Victory is like a watermelon. It's hard to spell and it tastes good."

It might decrease performance, but the point I am trying to make is that it would increase data size while playing. On Single Player it wouldn't be a whole lot, but on Multiplayer, it can be a whole lot of data increase. That would increase the amount of stress on servers, and possibly make people improve their server, probably costing them more money.

Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.
Please click the dragons, they need to grow. Also, my fully grown dragons can be found in my bio.
That's a pretty good concept. I'll have to support your idea. Anyway, how do they work? Do they act like paintings (randomly chosen) or more like the stone bricks (regular, cracked, mossy)?

Like paintings, only slight details vary from block to block making large amounts of same blocks a little more appealing to our eyes. Mossy and cracked bricks are slightly different thing than this idea, even though i used it as an example.
Will the textures be a limited amount or can the player use up to infinite amounts of random textures?
well i am not deciding this or any other technical details, I just wanted spread the idea itself. Infinite amounts of random textures sounds cool but i think this Depends on how the creator is going to create this (if it will ever be created as a mod or a feature)
this is a good Idea and I support it whole heartily. but it should be noted this should not be applied to some blocks like the smooth sandstone
"There would be random 4 or 3 textures for every block (or almost every) that game would randomly pick when the block is placed or found already placed."
It's at the beginning of the post.
Also, maybe i should make a signature for the people who support this?
This is a good concept, but an alternative that wouldn't annoy people (as much) would be to just add more blocks that have a similar base (like the different stone bricks). This would allow people to choose their own variant of the block, only downside is you might have a hard time remembering the crafting recipes, although these new blocks could be creative/spawned only.

THIS IS A FRIGGEN GREAT IDEA!!! But the sides of the texture would have to remain the same, or fairly similair, to prevent tiling issues.
Hmm, I actually made some parts of my the post Bold because so many of you complaing about the things I've already mentioned. Talking about annoyance I just can't imagine how this could annoy anyone, imagine few, slightly darker or brighter pixels on wood planks or stone that vary from texture to texture. That would be all that is going to be changed!
It sounds ok in theory, but I can find two problems:
Texture packs would be struck two blows, first from the initial update; it wouldn't matter if there were any new blocks added, every texture pack would simply go out-of-date. Secondly, this:
And since many of you mentioned, this could be optional, let's say a texture pack artist doesn't have enough time for this, he simply leaves all variants of block texture same. Vanilla textures could also stay same if it's a problem for Mojang while texture packs take advantage of this feature.
This makes no sense. The entire point of a texture pack is to alter how blocks look. You can't do that and simply ignore this feature.
Creations also suffer two blows: existing worlds will be screwed up if some tries to place new, say, wooden planks next to older ones, and they'd look rather ugly. No, sorry, the older blocks cannot "update to have new textures", it doesn't work that way, I don't think. You'd end up with one texture. Secondly, many players, myself included, do not want an ever-changing floor. There are times when monotone looks good, and mostly that's in player creations.
There is a solution for the latter, however; by having blocks spawn with random textures, but having them placed with identical textures. That makes the environment look good, and saves player creations.

well can't it simply refresh old worlds when you start it and pick random textures for existing blocks? Why "it doesn't work that way" ?
Also I think i should work on more picture examples instead of that much text.

If a texture artist didn't want to have any random textures, that doesn't mean that they are forced to use the default textures. Artists that don't want to have random textures would simply not add any alternate terrain.pngs, and if they did add random ones they could simply copy and paste their original textures so that they can have random dirt but not random planks.
My point is that random textures should only work if there are random textures to choose from, and if there aren't then only the regular (default or texture pack) textures would be used. I don't like having to say this, but this is my opinion and what I make of what I've read. I'm not trying to put words into other people's mouths, and I'm not trying to start an argument, I'm just sharing what I have to say.

Have a nice day.
The random textures can actually be applied to all blocks but it is optional.
Also I was thinking, how about having random textures for items too?

That sounds nice, especially for the creative mode.
