I think creepers need a buff. Its way too easy to fight them, just sprint at them, hit them, repeat. If you're skilled enough, you can jump at the end of the charge so that you do a crit on the creeper (and sometimes hit him again after the crit too) but not be blown up when you land.
Creepers and Endermans add some terrifying spice to Minecraft. Skeletons, zombies, and spididers* are all kinda lack-luster.
*ESPECIALLY poison spiders. They don't make me scared: just annoyed. The idea of creepers hiding in mineshafts is more of a deterrent than "sit in a corner while the poison goes away."

for me they always seem to explode when I run far enough for them to cool down on smp.
Minecraft can be modded. There are several anti-creeper mods out there.

On topic, I disagree. While the explosions from Creepers can be annoying, nerfing them is not the solution. Rather, we should make them smarter. Rather than simply blowing up the player the first chance they get, resulting in many a "Well, my armour kept me from being killed, but [CENSORED]...MY HOUSE!" moment, we should get a cunning and stealthy opportunist, one that doesn't waste it's one chance to strike, but instead follows in the shadows, waits, siezes the moment when the player is vulnerable or has it cornered, and only then sacrifices itself...for the maximum chance of success in its murderous mission!
EDIT: Slightly off-topic; Whenever there is a complaint about Creepers, it seems that 90% of the replies are either spam, outright trolling, or people saying "get a mod" (which is explicitly forbidden by the section rules). This needs to stop. People need to learn some manners. If you can't learn manners, at the very least learn to follow the rules. Above all else, if you don't have anything constructive to contribute, there is no reason to post at all. You can show your disapproval by not bumping the topic back to the top of the forums.
for a stealth creeper, maybe it could sprint? be a less obvious color? follows the player for a certain number of blocks before attacking? just some suggestions

They are working on smarter AI, hopefully, Creepers and other mobs will get a serious AI makeover.

No. Creepers are the main surprise in the game, why make them easier? They are easy enough, and should be HARDER!
Keep your eyes peeled, and snipe them with a bow before they get too close. Creepers are NOT hard to kill. I haven't had one blow up on me in ages. I think they need to be smarter and faster.
Nerf Creepers?! Why would you do that? I think they're very well done and don't need a nerf at all. It's just bad luck getting taken from behind, its the circle of life in Minecraft.

I think all of the hostile mobs should be smarter in different difficulties:
Easy: the ones we already have.
Normal: skeletons that don't walk towards you like idiots, but instead stay and try to keep you in sight. Creeers that try to avoid being hit, and explode in nice spots, like cliffs. Enderman that are scary, not annoying, ALWAYS DROP ENDERPEARLS(should be in all difficulties), and ofcourse, fight better, not walk into your sword. Spiders that go down when necessary.
Hard: skeletons that back away to get distance. Creepers that are like land stealth bombers. Endermen that make houses into messes by moving blocks like greifers, not morons. Spiders the same as in normal. Zombies that can grab.
