Yeah! But just one problem: invisibility skins. But okay.
One could do that already, I think.
In any case, I was thinking it would not be terribly hard to do a mod that does this... if the code exists already mojang may be more likely to adopt it
You managed to decompile and continue without me giving source code? O_O Bro, you are a god. Of course do whatever the [REDACTED] you want!!!! Good luck on it
i lost my regular steve skin because i went skin hunting but that picture zombie showed us didnt work so can someone please help me?
You don't need a steve skin.... Also if you get a 1.8 skin(different legs/arms, and clothes) then it won't work on 1.7-, and if you get a 1.6+ skin it won't work on 1.8

The old skin layout will still work on 1.8 since it's optional.
Oh dear, a new generation of lame skins is coming (Diamond armor skins)
I don't see how people can make any worse skins with the new layout then they can now...
except that you can turn off certain parts of your skin so now people can strip naked in servers if they wanted to.
Snapshot 14w3b introduces the ability to texture both arms and legs! It also gives every other body part an extra 3D layer similar to the hat layer in the original skin! Awesome! These new extra layers are covered up by Armor, just like the hat area. The new skin file uses a 64x64 layout with the old skin at the top and the optional overlays in the bottom half. Old 64x32 skins are still supported without modification.
However... this addition will not apply to similarly shaped mobs (zombies, zombie pigmen, etc) and it doesn't work on armor. Whether these things will change in the future is anyone's guess.
As happy as I am for the player improvements, I can't help but wonder if my suggested layout could still benefit the mobs and armors. If nothing else, it would still allow for asymmetrical mob skins and armor while staying within the small 64x32 file size. But then they would have a major discrepancy between formats...
I still like the idea of applying my format to the new skin layout - the bottom half of the 64x64 texture could contain the overlay regions. The only difference then is that the head and hat area on the bottom half would not be used. Perhaps those areas could then be left empty for modders and any other small additions that Mojang may add in the future....
Or perhaps I should just be happy with what we have

Nope. I tried it, I admit. Didn't work. Just made me completely black. *Fail* Also, I decided I preferred Kitox to LordSkybane, if you're wondering.
This is the BEST DAY. I have been looking forward to this suggestions' implementation before it was ever even mentioned on the forums. As a skin-drawer this is my calling! I will start working on a new version of my skin at once to celebrate this endeared addition!
... I will loose so much spare-time to this addition... ._.
In your diagram of the mapping, i don't see the layer for the hat being for the whole body.. I would really like an awesome necklace, or a wristband, or make parts of my skin be more defined like the jumper part of my skin look more like a piece of clothing..
You misunderstand. My diagram here was a suggestion on how to redo the original skin layout in such a way that it would grant us space for texturing both arms and legs while still fitting within the 64x32 image size. Also note that this suggestion is several years old.
Snapshop 14w03a introduced a different take on what I proposed. They use a completely different mapping which also includes extra space for additional "hat layers" for the rest of the body. It is entirely different from the layout I thought up of.

+1. You've got my support.

[Here] is the Reddit link he's talking about.
I am pretty sure this is the first major suggestion on the MCF which has actually been done by Mojang

Never mind me, just watching suggestions made in 2011 get added.

(because it annoys me, sorry)
I didn't even think of that but ohmigod noo

Now someone go make that edited Steve skin in the support banner

Where's the expanded hat layer?
