My suggestion is the ability to place dirt into a furnace and smelt it into sand.
Now, at first, the idea of being able to turn dirt into sand seems both
1) Unrealistic
and
2) Pointless
However, I've thought about the subject for a decent bit of time. A lot of people like to build underground bases without ever emerging to the surface. I've done this type of challenge before, and I know that one of the few things you cannot acquire is glass. You can grow trees, wheat, mushrooms, etc. and mine to your heart's content. You can collect (I believe) every block in the game that you can normally collect, except for sand and clay.
A fairly simple solution is to make it so that dirt can be smelted in a standard furnace with standard fuel. It would be just like any other furnace smelting, except for the input and output being new.
The use of this is fairly limited, but I can see it being popular. You can easily turn chests of dirt into sand, for use as glass or sandstone. I see this as an easy addition to the code.
The only issue left is whether dirt is less valuable than sand. By this, I mean to say:
Is getting eight sand blocks for eight dirt blocks and a piece of coal fair?
If it isn't deemed fair by most, then perhaps smelting dirt would return a 'dust' item. This dust could be crafted into a 2x2 square and create sand. At that point, you receive two blocks of sand for eight dirt blocks and a piece of coal. I'm not necessarily suggesting this; my main point is that dirt is useless in crafting and only useful in scaffolding, while sand is useful but must be gathered in specific locations. I'm aware that there are tons of deposits of sand (I run into way too many desert biomes, I'm not discrediting the vast quantities that exist) but I feel that this addition wouldn't effect gameplay all that much. This isn't a major change, it's just a helpful little addition that has some use.
Comment, please. Perhaps I'm the only one who thinks this is a viable idea. If you don't agree with me, please don't say 'That's dumb lolnoob' but explain why you think so. Thanks :biggrin.gif:

Perhaps even making it gravel into sand is viable, but that doesn't make sense either.
That makes loads more sense. The word gravel itself comes from the French gravelle, meaning "coarse sand". Gravel and sand are much more similar than dirt and sand.
I don't support the idea, unless there is a way to reproduce whatever is crafted into Sand. For example, if breaking Stone with anything besides a pick made it drop gravel, and gravel was crafted into sand.

I don't quite understand what you mean by 'reproduce whatever is crafted into Sand'
Explain a bit more?
Ok, for example, I try to refrain from using too much glass. I do so because you cannot make more sand, so if I use too much, I will have to dig up a bunch of beaches, and that leads me to travel really far away.
Craftable Sand would fix this problem, but then whatever is used to make the sand would be used up instead. So I would rather it be made with something that is renewable, like Cobblestone. All you need to make Stone is one lava source and one water source. So if it could be crafted from stone (or from gravel and gravel can then be crafted from stone), I can build without having to use all of the the resources that make up the world, leaving it marred, ugly, and forcing me to expand just to find more stuff.
I know I could just INVedit more sand, but I play without mods or 3rd party tools.
So basically, I support fully renewable resources.

I'd like to get clay out of dirt, certainly, not sure about sand...
Maybe a new item called a sifter? You turn Gravel into Sand by sifting the big rocks and dirt into clay. With a small (less than the chance of finding it in the ground) chance of getting a gold ingot

@Urg
That was one of the primary concerns. It also has the lost fuel from the furnace, which means it is more challenging to acquire sand in this fashion.

+ = ?
That's one idea. I was thinking more of underground bases that could use the occasional dirt patches you find while digging.
@Akel
It was more oriented toward sand being easier to get than dirt having a use, but yes, essentially you are correct.

Cobbletone->Gravel->Dirt->Sand->Clay
I always have an excess of everything except dirt :|
