So I was searching for kevlar suggestions on the forum and everything I found was about bulletproof vests. Now, Minecraft doesn't have bullets (unless you have the mod of course), but I could see a vest reducing arrow damage. Here are some ideas. Note: This was a thought that came up at 3AM after having been up for almost 36 hours, so bear with me folks).
1. Kevlar Fiber Sheets
So kevlar that is used in vests and whatnot is made up of woven sheets of the kevlar fiber. Now I suggest that you can't just use string. I think that you have to weave either two or three strings together:
= string
That would give you 1 kevlar fiber. Then you want to use those to make a woven kevlar sheet. To do that you just fill the entire board as so:
= kevlar fiber
That would leave you with a woven sheet.
2. The Vest
Now the part you have all been expecting, the kevlar vest. You would craft this the same way you craft any other chest piece, but with a kevlar mat isntead:
= Kevlar mat
Now the kevlar vest would give you roughly as much protection as say a gold chest piece, but with a special exception. It causes arrows to do half the damage. This would allow for a mreo direct approach to Skeletons. You damn pesky skeletons.
3. Fire Resistant Clothing
Most fire jackets (those worn by firefighters) actually have a good amount of kevlar in them. Many oven glove utilities also have kevlar in them. You could create a chest piece that is a mixture of wool and kevlar that would allow for increased fire resistance, by say a factore of 20% or so.
= kevlar mat
= wool (of any color)
I think there are many other things that could be done. Kevlar can be used to make boats if it is formed and baked (I believe thats hwo it works, would have to do more research). Other things such as rope (yes I know that is an old suggestion) can be made from kevlar fiber.
i see one problem with this is that notch will only add things that have a medieval effect on them (except for the jukebox, etc) kevlar if i can barly remember was made during world war 1 or 2 so it is definitly not the era for style for the game.
so yer kevlar fits in with minecraft as much as a laser fits in with the stone age.

I understand your point. However, the game is bound to advance in technology. More and more people are clamoring for more advanced technology. And while I think it will be a LONG time before integrated cars and what not, kevlar is a fairly simple idea. And it wouldn't have to actually be kevlar, I was more going for a reinforced string/fiber kind of idea.

well i hate to be a hater but notch is a very stubbern little basterd and will not listen to anyone cause he wants to make a game he created totally by himself. i bet there a loads of people who said and deemanded guns be added to minecraft well notch being the creater did only one thing......he said no and continued making minecraft
so yer cars, kevlar, guns (not saying u are suggesting them but i put it here just cause i can), etc
but reinforced string might happen itle have like a combination of string to somthing like slime balls to make string that if made into a rod makes the rod 10% or more efficiant somthing along those lines might make it into minecraft
I wouldn't dismiss the idea as a bad one just based upon the idea of the time setting for Minecraft. After all, there is no official setting for Minecraft as of yet.
I just don't like the idea because I feel that it is too complex and isn't needed considering that we already have many types of armour.
Jeb has said that new tools will not be coming out, but rather there will be some modifications for tools to make them better. Perhaps it would be better to focus on suggestions for a modification to previous armour to give fire protection.
well there is a offical setting notch annoced it to be medieval based
and where did you find out jeb is modifing and adding new tools?
I think buffing each type of individual armour would be better.
Diamond armour may have a fire proofing ability.
Iron could have some explosive protection
And leather, gets a small boost in protection but gets susceptible to fire.
You see? Giving more uses for existing items. Think of gravel.

Hm, this is both a good and bad idea - well at least in my opinion.
What I see bad at this is switching armor too much. Imagine being at a lava pool and a creeper comes down from a dark part of the cave. Explodes and pushes you down to the lava. Diamond or iron? Do you even have both? You'd also lose more if you die. I really hope this makes sense.
e: Also, to explain my answer to the post "Doesn't really matter" - I wouldn't be against it, but I can't imagine it being more than a mod.
I must say it is interesting to see how people reacted to this. A lot of times, people embrace new apparel and gear in game. I think it's almost refreshing to see it shot down, even if it was my idea. I do think it would be fun in the game mostly because it adds a whole new level of realism. Also, it gives you more reasons to kill spiders and whatnot. Because right now, you kill enough spiders for a bow, then you avoid 'em. Hear, you would be killing as many as you could in order to make more gear. And arrow resistance would make it much more attractive to go hunt skeletons.

People embrace ideas that belong in the game. Kevlar is beyond what technology minecraft has. If I threw you on a beach somewhere in the middle of nowhere, your not going to be able to make kevlar.

As I said earlier, I was more or less going for the reinforced fiber/string idea. Kevlar was just what came to mind. You could in fact call it whatever you, still have the same effect. Heck, the first bulletproof vest was made in the like early twenties when a guy from Chicago wove a bunch of sheets of woven silk together. So it doesn't just have to be Kevlar
Lasers fitting in with the Stone Age would be kinda Steampunk stuff, I admit I like Steampunk stuff but I agree. If I wanted Steampunk I'll install a mod. So, simply, I agree, it doesn't fit the era.

Laser =/= Steampunk, at least not very well. Also we already have armor.
