Okay, my (not too complicated) idea is that we have gems in Minecraft. We already have diamonds, but these are different. They're special.
So, lets start by mining some gems. To do so, you need a gold pick, and you need to find gem ore. There would be 3-5 gem ores (of all kinds) per chunk, but they would appear in the greatest number in Dungeon chests, though these pose some danger. After mining it, you get gems of that specific ore, but only 1. Gems cannot be stacked. Each gem does something different when applied to a tool. Gems can only be applied to:
Swords
Armor (helmets/chest only)
Bows
There are 4 types of gems:
Aggressive
Defensive
Reward
Improvement
Aggressive gems can be applied by crafting the gem above a sword/bow. Up to two aggressive gems may be applied to a bow or sword.
Defensive gems can be applied by crafting the gem above a piece of armor. One defensive gem may be applied to a helmet, and two may be applied to chest pieces.
Reward gems can be applied to a sword/bow by crafting the weapon above the gem. Bows/sword can only have one reward gem.
An Improvement gem can be applied to armor by crafting it below a chest piece. A chest piece may have 1 Improvement gem.
You can only apply gems one at a time, and require a crafting table, despite needing only two slots. The gems are as follows: Aggressive
-Bloodstone:
+15% damage
-Tourmaline
+25% chance of setting mob on fire
-Beryl
+10% knockback (against mobs)
-Citrine
20% chance of stunning mob
Defensive
-Quartz
+25% durability (armor only)
-Peridot
Heart regain (1 heart-10 seconds, 5 heart max per day)
-Iolite
+15% chance armor will take hit
-Garnet
-30% knockback (against you)
Reward
-Tanzanite
+25% chance of drops
-Emerald
+35% chance of multiple (2+) drops
Improvement
-Ruby
+20% durability (all items)
-Aquamarine
+2 hearts
Now, that's all done! You can apply only 1 of a certain gem onto an item. Gems will show up on an item when held or worn, even if you aren't the one holding it or wearing it.
WOOT! MORE SHOOTY STUFF!
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 90% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 10% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens. (Griefing is an art. And a lot of dead creepers.)
I like this idea.... but it deffinately needs a little bit of work if your gonna start using magic powers to minecraft.
There's no magic, its just a way to change up the combat scenario, so you don't just hide behind a fence holding the mouse button.

We should have more gems, seeing that we only have 1.
It's about both working together in harmony.

Minecraft is about simplicity. I like the thought you put into your idea, but I don't like the idea itself. Sorry.
Agreed. This works much better as a mod. But I think it should heal 1/2 hearts every 10 seconds to not be over powered. Possibly only to heal so much in a limited time. Like it can only heal 7 hearts max every day.
I like the effort put into the post, but not the idea. Seems a bit complex for me. On top of that, I think that this is already suggested. Wait, I KNOW

At a loss for words? Here's a few you can use: Welcome, to Night Vale...

Not to complicated my ass. Mod yes Vanilla no! I liked your idea of new gems but when you went all voodo augmentation on me I lost you. All those gem boosters is to complicated and RPG for the vanilla Minecraft. Make it a mod.
Nah, puts too much emphasis on combat than Minecraft should have in its present state.
Actually, Notch will improve the combat of minecraft. It's starting with the bow by giving it more real characteristics. Notch has been quoted by saying that the combat is boring.

Right, so it would probably be better to wait until Minecraft has a more distinct combat system before adding this kind of stuff.

But gems won't make it fun. It won't change anything but the amount of damage and stuff. It is also very complicated and makes Minecraft too structured.
This is pretty cool, dispite the fact that you aren't talking about magic, that's mainly what you think of when you hear "gems", that is, if you are nerdy like me. But maybe you should think about posting about magic, you've got a good post here, I think you can do it. But if you do, put it in Mods not Suggestions, this would be a mod that I might get, but I dont think it would fit in vanilla Minecraft

I will agree with you on the structured part. The gems need more uses than just the power-ups.

Wrong... it's about creativity.

Have you SEEN the map generator?
If that's simple, than i'm afraid to ask what complicated is.
Yeah, but I haven't seen a GOOD one in a while.
good point lol
we have 2 gems
lapis lazuli is also a gem in real life
It's more of a precious stone than a gem... i'll re-check that though.
EDIT: Wikipedia calls it a "semi-precious stone".
