I have an idea. What if, over time, as a portal gets corrupted, the portal hue turns much darker and swirls more violently, and if you are near it, the screen pulses a bright purple every now and then. The portal would make much more noticable noises, both louder and creepier. If the portal is very corrupted, you can be randomly teleported to a random location in the Nether if you are standing near it, as if the portal's malevolent energy has become so strong that it has created a highly unstable portal, which pulls in objects like a black hole. Also, Obsidian that has been corrupted will produce a portal that is also corrupted if re-used. To prevent corruption, and malevolent portal instabilites, you will have to craft an omen or something, whcih would be crafted out of gold, diamond, redstone - anything valuable.
To 'purify' obsidian, you would have to keep it in a light area above ground for a while. If left undergorund, or in the dark, it would corrupt the area slightly less than a portal. It would also (possibly) grow a new portal by breaking blocks and replacing them with obsidian. Leaving a corrupted block for too long would result in unforeseen consequences, such as a massive corrupt stronghold of evil, or a massive portal junction, multiplying corruption until the entire landscape is a burning, hellish wasteland. So, don't leave those things outside in the dark.
In the aforementioned purple fog, weirdfog tentacles would spawn, and would disappear when walked through or hit with light.
basically, turn portals into pulsating gateways to the deepest depths of Hell.
Sounds too extreme, if some kind of hard-core mode for the maps in enable maybe, making ita need to keep the the overworld safe sounds interesting, but it would be hard for the casual player, or someone that dont want to bother with it.
It's good until the 3rd stage. The 3rd stage can be that - The obsidian in the portal turn into BLOODY obsidian (the unused block) and THEN it turn every cobble stone and dirt into Nether rack and Soul Sand !
Once the propose of bloody obsidian is cleared then I would talk about that, but I think the red vines could give a pretty bloody look to the obsidian.
This idea has changed drastically from the first suggestion. From possible to obscene.
I love the idea, don't get me wrong, but I don't see the pigmen spawning and the red vines and bloody obsidian etc.
actually happening.
The fog was a nice idea, but maybe you could be able to toggle it?
I'd just turn it down a Notch.

Haha so punny.
The pigmen were part of the idea since the start, but mostly since people kept suggesting them. An maybe a toggling, personally i think it's not hard to keep in check, for the moment u construct a portal you should have a bucket at least t keep the fog in check.
I like the idea.
Though I think a lot of people wouldnt like this on all the portals for obvious reasons.
Notch spoke about portals appearing in dungeons rarely.
So perhaps these more corrupting evil portals would only appear when naturally generated?
or maybe when a naturally generated portal leads to a "hell dungeon" if they are implemented.
I talked before about the wild portals, those are what I think would improve most this suggestion.
Imagine going down a cave and you run out of torches, feel into a darker unexplored area, suddenly you see a light in the distance, "yes safe" you think, as you come close you walk slower, something hinders your reach to safety, some ominous sound, the light a fire, "but how it's burning?" you ask yourself, you see some red blocks and brown too, then you see it, standing in the middle of the darkness with an eerie light, there's a portal, a red vine grew around the obsidian blocks, it may be the only way out, so you walk through it hoping for salvation....
just saying. Of course it wouldn't work as well if the z-pigmen spawned, but would be awesome to find a ghast down there :3
this idea would make you want to turn of your portals and how about if the portals strength is always increasing as the portal itself is getting bigger in size and what if someone made custom items just water stopping the corruption makes it really easy and defeats the purpose so what if you could make holy water that would stop it instead it would be made with a bucket of water surrounded by gold at the top bottom left and right because the gods of minecraft are cheap and how about if portals would appear at random in caves or above ground where it has enough room to spawn and will continue to grow in size until it runs out of room.
I don't want it to be aggressive, and a lot of people wouldn't like it, so I prefer it to be easy to stop.
I have a similar version posted. I called it 'Leaking'. Its on the 1st page.
If it's similar you shouldn't had posted a new one and posted directly in this thread since it's been going since last year. Please use the search function and check dates before posting.
I like this idea though I am curious what it might do to a tree(just for curiosity's sake). Also thinking about the summoning of zombie pigmen after a certain corruption level is reached that got me thinking about the mentionings of mobs making villages. Perhaps after the corruption has reached a certain point the pigmen will set up shop around the portal and be more aligned towards being friendly to the player. In single player this would actually kind of give the player the ability to found a village, and a way, in multiplayer, to have a rudimentary defense for the portal. Perhaps given time(and an increase in the corruption distance) the pigmen would further evolve their defenses. This could take many many Minecraft days.
Seems like a good idea, but maybe a bit more polished explaination would be in order :/ Possibly.
I like the fog a lot, but the root and changed blocks might be overkill. Maybe the block corruption thing if it was only one certain type of block, because if I wanted to design it a certain way I wouldn't want the color changes to ruin it. The root I feel is surely overkill. Fog can stay, block corruption can if tweaked a bit.
Oh, and the zombie pigmen idea posted above might be interesting. Maybe if pigs nearby would sort of just stand and stare at the portal, mesmerized, as if they can hear their undead brethren moaning just across the purple mist. That'd be kind of funny, I think.

That sounds pretty cool, but I also like the "advanced pigmen" idea. I'm sure both are possible. And it would be pretty funny :biggrin.gif:

(very rarely)
If you mean spawning from the portal area, yeah, but really small, just above ghasts, they are too noisy.

It's a comparison to explain how the fog would act, it would be similar to water in spreading around.

Don't click this link, HE is haunting it...
That's a great idea, but could bring some problems, maybe pigs would get scared of the portal, but could get closer from time time.
