if i behave weird in my post; it's not that i am weird actually. I like to pretend being weird just for the satisfaction of me and to make the community feel more normal. herpy herpy derp. btw, comic sans.
A way to make dirt actually renewable? You got my support.
Would make terraforming a lot easier, and a lot less destructive... Last time I needed dirt, I ended up DEVOURING AN ENTIRE ISLAND WITH MY BARE HANDS, no joke, it wasn't pretty.
Also gives me something to do with all those access seeds I get from my wheat farm.

This seems a bit to complicated for a game like Minecraft. Theres too many features for just one simple block, That I't seems overpowered. Minecraft is a game for ALL ages, and some younger gamers might not be able to understand all the math your explaining. As soon as i read about fractions, I lost all hope for this. When i play Minecraft I want to have a fun enjoyable time, not have to do math like " Tall grass has a 1/16 chance on growing on this dirt" and "Flowers have a 1/32 chance of growing." This might make me seem lazy for not doing math, but ultimately thats NOt what i want to do when playing a game about Survival and creativity. Im sorry, but I dont support this.

Have you tried brewing lately? It's way more complicated than this.

Well, I cant imagine Making a glass vial, geting some water in it, and putting different stuff in them can be very hard to do. Im talking about the Math that you must do to use it.You dont need to use Math to brew a potion.
you may bump this thread a bit much, but it's a good suggestion, so I can live with it.
on topic. Maybe worms could have a chance to pop out of any tilled/destroyed dirt blocks (fertile or not) and could be either used as bait to increase the chance of fish bite on a rod, or placed into one slot of the compost bin (maybe it could be it's own special slot) and it will speed up the process slightly (maybe take 1/5 off the time or something) for one day per worm. One worm is consumed each minecraft day.

You can't make metre cubed pieces of rock get jiggy with each other, that's just WRONG.
By a 1/16 chance of something happening, that simply means that possibly during a 16-day period, a single block of tall grass will sprout. You don't need to pull out a calculator or anything.
You seem confused. To say the odds of something happening are 1 in 16 does not mean that "If x happens sixteen times, one of them will be this". It means that for every possible time this action could occur there is a 1 in 16 chance that it will. Using your example then, that means on the 16th day of a 16 day period there is still the exact same chance of the growth happening as in the 1st day of the period.
The only way to get around that very simple mathematical principle would be for the growing mechanic to use a more complex equation which takes the outcome of previous attempts into consideration. Essentially the probability of it happening on every day would be weighted so that if it got to day 16 there would be a 100% chance of the growth occurring.
As for you actual idea: I'd prefer to see it take much longer than half a day to compost a stack of items. At least one full day would be a bit better, but personally I'd rather see it take 2-3 days to compost a complete stack of items.
Somebody complained earlier that it took a full day to compost a full stack of items, so I changed it to a half day. I'm still not sure what I should change it to. It WAS originally two days during the drafting of my suggestion, but that seemed very long for a measly 64 blocks.
I can understand that, but even if Minecraft isn't a super realistic game I prefer some level of realism. Ore doesn't instantly turn into ingots when you place coal in an oven, it takes time to smelt. And as someone who once had a compost pile I know that it takes a loooooong time for things to really degrade to the point you can use it as fertilizer.
Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.
Please click the dragons, they need to grow. Also, my fully grown dragons can be found in my bio.
Dang, so no infinite durability? No offense, it's your suggestion.
Enter that and you'll score one hundred thousand rupees for us both, along with a spiffy card!
I like this idea, have you made a getsatisfaction, or tweeted Jeb and/or Notch about it?

Seems more reasonable (to me, anyway, though I'm sure you'll get differing opinions).
