Not my server. A good way to stay safe is to comply to the EULA too. I'll see how the server reacts once August rolls around. I have a few servers I play on that are neglecting to comply since they think they are above the law. Since that is what this is all about. That and people complaining to mojang about their kids buying stuff.
I feel bad about circling around on this one, but I still want to touch on that subject just to point this out: This is another case of parental external locus of control. Like the kids who play Call of Duty because their parents don't read the rating system or look at the game before letting their child play it. What parent lets their child have access to their credit card? Out of those, what parent doesn't have some kind of limit on their credit card, and why wasn't there any kind of need for approval/verification before making a $10,000 purchase? To avoid having future enforcement and/or changes in the future, the rest of us need to be cautious as to avoid having this happen. I suggest putting security announcements for avoiding scammers (something like "be wary of what you purchase online") on your servers if you own them, and being a bit safer online yourself. Also, reporting people who are obvious scammers to Mojang via email or alerting everyone to the presence of scammers via the forums. That way, whether the enforcement harms servers or helps them, we can avoid being caught off-guard like this again.

I have a been working on a faction server for a while and I heard about the new Minecraft EULA and I am thinking that I am seeing this wrong. Many faction servers aren't doing much about the new EULA update so I'm thinking if I missed some kind of information or miss interpreted some info. My server runs of kit donation, items, since the new EULA forbids donations besides anything cosmetic how would a faction server deal with it. How would a faction server that is relies on donations to stay up and that the donations are item rewarded get through this. I know that donating was never allowed before (now I do) but I need a way to keep a server up and running. Cosmetic features don't really have that big of an impact on factions server nor do I want to charge people to join my server. If anyone could help me come up with some kind of loop whole or idea or tell me how to get around this that would be great!
As per advertisement Elua states nothing about ads so in turn you can most likely (correct me in the case that i am incorrect) use one of the following methods to obtian a profit or funding for and from your server.
Use a resorce pack to administer visual verbal or a mixture or the two to provide an ad
Use ether a plugin or game modification to administer visual verbal or a mixture or the two to provide an ad.
As per my standing on this new event the statments released by the staff concurent to the date of realese. I am "the five in between 0 and 10" due to the fact that I do host a server for this game but also enjoy playing on other servers and just find it anoying to see other players who are both monetary and virtual classes ahead of me and other players due to there monetary inclined position.
The fact that mojang is destroying half of the community is saddening. Most of the servers will go down. It sucks most because of the fact that they're even taking down the poor servers that use the Little donation money they get to keep the server going. I hope they allow servers to take in donations.
I hope all server go to a monthly fee. $15 a month like most other online games seem right. Come on pay to play servers!!!!! N
Pay to play will be the only viable way to host a modded minecraft server like feed the beast or technic.
Most kids will have to beg their parents for an account. The whineing in the fourms will start soon after the eula enforcement begins

donations are not violating the eula agreement in any way
This is 100% untrue. It is called clean room design and has been done throughout software history. Bukkit is directly derived from the vanilla server; it is not a different "server code" (as you put it), it's the vanilla server software with an API.
so far that c# project still require a custom client as well so accout verification has probably been cut out on server side as well as access to the uuid system. most clean roon develpoments arent very effective because they cut out featuers provided by the host company such as security so its not 100 untrue but yes it can go either way and nothing say thet mojang cant just buy it like the bought bukkit

I am actually quite glad that Mojang did this because one thing that discouraged me from joining many servers was the fact that there were so many pay to win servers out there when I had already payed for the game Mnecraft. Thank-You Mojang for doing this.

I'm sorry, but this is b******t! I'm disabled, and run my server for the community. Because I'm disabled, its very hard for me to pay monthly fees for a fast internet connection, the energy bills for keeping the computer constantly running, and for maintenance costs (for example, I use no-ip.org for my domain name because I have a dynamic IP). You have to pay them to get advanced features. To help with this, I've added a donation link (which is hardly ever used), and the ability for players to purchase ranks (giving them different abilities) or items in-game. I had used the money gained from donations/purchases for contests. Every month I'd hold some sort of contest with the winners winning a copy of a game and ranks for a month. Now, I can't do that anymore. Where am I going to get the help I need for running a server? I've been running the server for 2 1/2 years, have been playing since early alpha, and right now, I'm pretty angry. You guys have made how many millions due to this game? And you won't allow servers to "ask" for monetary help? You do know, I hope, that the main reason that minecraft is such a popular game is because of its multi-player content. Basically, if it wasn't for people like me (server owners), I'd guarantee you that Minecraft wouldn't be as popular as it is. Yet, you're sticking it to the owners. Thanks guys, you're wonderful. Seriously. You're a bunch of jerks, imo!

If your player-base likes you as the server admin, likes the server in general, they should conform to the new ways.
Also, Mojang isn't saying you can't ask for monetary help. It's what you do as the "thank you" that is restricted.
I run a Family server. that means, most of my players who log in are kids/teenager. Yes, there are a few adults, but not the entirety of the base. I have never used a cent donated to the server for anything other than the server. And since mostly kids play on it, they can't afford to donate or what ever. That's why I always let the server be 100% free. No one ever had to pay to log on, but I have depended on donations (or monthly rank purchases, etc.) to keep the server up and running. So, you tell me, Rampage_x, how I'm supposed to charge a "monthly fee?" My server population will lose 90%, and only about 5 people could play if I use a monthly charge. Does that sound fair to you? Or are you just a mojang apologist?

If they don't care about you or the server enough to just donate, without expecting a "rank" in return, I say, close it down.
If they care about your server, and want to keep it up and running, wouldn't they continue to do business as usual?
I fully understand your point of view, no need to call names and make assumptions.
The new EULA would be relevant if there were no alternatives to pay-to-win servers. That is simply not the case. Pay-to-win is not successful outside ultramassive servers that truly depend on the system to survive.
Oh well. *wipes traces of creeper gunpowder from face*
I have a question asking for clarification of the rules..
(I do not currently run a server, the example of *I* is theoretical)
rule in question..
Can users purchase something that affects the entire server, such as a temporary XP boost?
Yes, but everyone who can access the server must be able to use the feature, regardless of whether they purchased it or not.
On this note my example is this:
As of today 6/24/14, the server I operate reaches its "donation goal" (of for example $50) and the perk for that is 7 day XP boost.
Can I restrict that boost to only people who are/were playing/joined my server on or before the day the "reward" was earned?
example:
bonus earned for 7 days on the 24th, person who joins my server on the 25th does not have access to the added feature (as they were not part of the server community when the perk was earned)
The idea here is that, though the restriction is play based.. the new user was not there when the feature was earned by the community, thus has no access to it.
Whatever the next day that the ($50) donation mark is reached (we will say July 1st for example sake); the 7 day count for xp boost is given again, and the member who joined on the 25th now has a 7 day boost to XP along with all existing server members.. but the person who joins on July 2nd does not (until the bonus is earned again).
Would this, or would it not be breaking this new set of rules?
Edit to add..
Basically, I'm asking whether this server rule is allowed :
"To have access to a perk that was community earned, you must be a part of the community on or before the day/time that perk was earned"
If they don't care about you or the server enough to just donate, without expecting a "rank" in return, I say, close it down.

I'm sorry, but I fail to see where I called you any names...? You just seem so supportive for Mojang, that to you, they can do no wrong (at least, that's how you come across). Sorry if I'm wrong on this matter. As to people not caring enough about the server to donate, please let me restate that its a Family server. I don't know if you've ever played on one, or ran one, but family servers are "safe places" for kids to hang out without worrying about someone cussing in chat, griefing, etc., etc. When the server was set up, it was initially so that my daughter would have a safe place to play. Over time, lots of other kids joined. Some of them are as young as 8. What am I supposed to do? Should I tell them to break their piggy banks, or spend all of their allowances just to play on my server? Sorry, but I won't do that. Personally, I have never "made a buck" off the server, since as I stated in the previous post that I used everything for the server only. Yes, there are some "pay to win" servers out there, but my server isn't one of them. Every new member can do everything except teleporting to others (they have to use /call instead of /tp), fly, or set multiple homes/world. That stuff is what the ranks buy, basically. My players have always had access to everything else, including a towny world where once they buy a plot (in game boseEconomy money), they can be creative and do what ever. In addition, I have a game world that's free to access, a PvE world (main world) and a PvP. Suffice it to say, all my users have plenty of options to have fun. I don't think I'm "sticking it" to anyone. And I feel that its unfair to me and my users, that you'd group us in with PTW servers. I'm somewhat offended by that.

I am very much supportive of the EULA. So if that much comes across, we are making progress.
I still don't understand why anything has to change because of EULA.
The definition of "donation" has changed. When someone donates they do it without expecting something in return.
If your current player-base doesn't want to do that, to help keep the server going, then what can you really do?
I think your missing my point, regardless of how servers make/spend money, whats important is the players and quality of play. That means change to the current system. Those changes will upset the current balance of things. Again, I, and apparently Mojang, are against servers taking money by giving in-game advantages because it ecourages unfair play. If servers cannot survive without unfair play, then that is the way things go.
Don't assume that minplex, etc will switch to pay-to-play. Just because they can no longer accept payment for perks does not mean players will no longer pay. Those players that would have otherwise bought perks, will instead fund the server to keep it alive via donations. Think about it: you spent hours and hours of time on the server, if you donate what you would have donated for a perk, then the server lives, otherwise it dies. If you were willing to pay that much for a perk, you would be willing to donate at least as much to keep your work from disappearing from server death. Players that have this money then, will donate to keep it alive, and players without it such as kids will get to enjoy it without stealing their parents credit cards. The server will simply have to survive without the kids parents credit cards, which is a good thing.
I hope my point came across clearly.
There will all ways be kids taking there parents credit card its just what kids do it will always happen in less there parents lock the cards up some where safe or keep them out of reach of there kids in a way its the parents fault if there kid gets a hold of the credit card and starts spending its as equal as telling a dog to sit and wait while you go the the store to buy it a bone it will just wander around town and when you get back it will be gone it always leads to the parents being unreasonable and not caring and then things like this happen to a group of people like us because one of them get all mad at there kid spending it and take there problems the components like Mojang where they get fed up and have to take action because of some thing that could have been prevented if the parent just had made sure the card was out of reach. kids will be kids its how we raze them that is the problem.

Alright dude, I'm not responding to any more of your posts. Its obvious that you don't understand what I'm trying to bring across. You don't know what a family server is, and you expect 8 year olds to pay to play (else they're not supportive). Sorry, that's not true. These "non-supportive" people have done a lot to spread the word about my server, to keep voting for it, and everything else they possibly can. Yet, because they're too young to afford to "keep the server going," - you assume, and wrongly. I run the server for them, the ones who are loyal. I have always accepted donations, in addition to them purchasing ranks. We all know that its very hard to get donations, and I don't blame the people on my server for it. I know that a lot of them simply don't have the money, and that perhaps paying $5/month for a rank would probably be easier for them. But I'm through wasting words with you. You have no idea what I'm trying to say, and keep repeating the same stuff over and over again. Mojang basically killed my server.

Fair enough.
I will say this, if the people who donated thus far, to keep the server going to date, doesn't want to continue to do that without you basically making a "sell" to get that done, then yeah...
Nothing has to change because of the EULA but the mentality of players who never really donated, they "purchased" from the server instead.
I'm sorry, but I fail to see where I called you any names...? You just seem so supportive for Mojang, that to you, they can do no wrong (at least, that's how you come across). There are many ways you can still make money with servers its just harder and you need to find them with out breaking Mojang's Terms and Rules Rampage dose has a point the term donation dose mean for someone to donate with out expecting some thing in return the problem with servers up to this point was the confusion between BUY and DONATE, Buying would be the right term for getting such as a rank or a kit or in game money for a server but some ware down the evaluation of servers it got confused with donations there is not much we all can do we are all feeling the pain and are all seeking help on this issue of the matter i was hoping that Mojang would have just put a price limit on a donation like say $10.00 or so max for a donation because its not the donations that are the problems its the large prices some kits cost up to $2000.00 and then kid get there moms or dads credit card and start spending it always leads to the parents not taking control of what there kids do and don't and Mojang just had enuf of it and put some rules down we all will adapt to the new rules and we will struggle with it or we will strive if you have a good team on a server you will always make good money from people donating not "BUYING" as far as you not getting money from you server you just where not trying hard enuf or it did not have the right crowd on it there was a Tekkit Server i played on that was pulling in around $1000.00 a month just from people buying kits and stuff so server do pull in a lot of cash not enuf to live off of unless you invest in like 10 of them but ya no one is saying you cant still have a server just maybe tell people "if you like the server think about donating to help us keep it up" that's all you need to say and the people that play will do the rest. it may be a crowd issue your having which means you will need to promote your server on more sites like planet Minecraft or Minecraft forums there are a number of voting sites as well you can post on for free and that will direct traffic to your server which will help to bring in some money to keep it up.
I hope some of that helped or at leased you understand some of it

Any decent server should still be able to stay afloat with standard subscriptions or non-perk donations.
Any servers that die off, the community probably didn't need anyway.

Food for thought.

I wish you the best.
