Thanks for sharing this story, JTE.
I never had the pleasure of playing back in that day. I was introduced by an old friend (who I've lost now :/). A high school buddy of mine ended up buying it for me because I was on the fence about it. Three years and quite a few servers into it, I've never regretted it. I hope to work on a mod some day and continue my work on building servers.

That was amazing. You have done so much for our game. That story was great and showed me how it was like back in classic (only bought game in 1.2.5 so i have no idea xD) but still i shall hit that upvote button!
I created the "Additional Reading" post about Blocktopia, it seems my memory/stories didn't serve me 100% correct, but I was pretty close.
The reason I even included JTE in that thread was that I believe she was a major reason why (TheOnes/Blocktopia) started adapting to Lava Survival game modes.
Anyway, it's a great to hear the whole story from the person themself!
Heh, this brings back a lot of nostalgic memories, I can additionally vouch for JTE's work, it was rather astounding when she released it. For it was superior by many standards comparatively to the default software.
I was never really active on these forums, I think I had an account around 2009ish but it most likely was removed due to inactivity. The forums were much different back then, though. Most poeple who played the game were active on the forums, resulting in many people recognizing each other. People like AVM, Snowman, and others come to mind. I regret not being as active in the community itself back then. Then again, my computer was barely managing 15fps at the time, so there's that.
Modded parts of the game were much more different back then. A map like the water climbing map alone was incredible to me because it was a modified map. So seeing a custom server like JTE's was really something different.
Anyways, back on topic. I can also vouch for JTE. I was pretty amazed the first time I joined her server because I couldn't wrap my head around the idea of fake players, let alone the other stuff that was made. There really wasn't anything like it at the time. I wish she released the old server software just for the hell of it, seeing how Bukkit, Spigot, Canary, hMod, and all other public server software have done the same - I don't really understand what the issue there was/is.
I don't really know about the golden apple thing because I wasn't active around that time in particular, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the truth.
If it's real, then I'm sorry if I offend you in any way. But I want more proof, you can use archive.org if some links are dead.
You name it, I'll tell you if it exists and fetch it for you if possible. I doubt the original post of my thread was archived, and it might not even be possible for admins of this forum to retrieve it since the forum software was 'ported over' at some point when Curse acquired it...

Good story man, I think that you have a good history with Minecraft and should do a lot more to help in the present. At first, I thought that your story was fake, but after hearing proof, and seeing all those pictures, I knew it was true. You should consider working for Dropbox or Facebook, they could use a good coder/hacker like you.
Not sure what to make of this, but BC brings up some good points. I joined fairly recently (last year or so) and I've only been playing Minecraft since 1.2.5. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate the supposed ability of a modder, but openly claiming something this big out of seemingly nowhere just rubs me the wrong way. He may have really done this and the people vouching for him may have actually seen his supposed work, but I haven't, and it's hard for me to garner any information when there isn't any around the internet. Every hard search I do on the OP doesn't bring anything to the table, nor do any hard-points in the OP itself.
You may have influenced it, you may not have, but either way I just find this all a bit too hard to believe.
It's kind of sad to see so many relatively new players doubting the way things were then, so long after it happened, then thinking they're somehow cool for it.
Those of us that were there know it happened. No amount of insult-slinging will change that.

So, links to archives of the actual website and original threads AND files all posted within the correct time frame aren't enough for you..? It exists. It is a tangible thing that you can download and inspect, and both its make and features have been verified by so many who were there to witness it. The only thing left to question is why all of this went completely unwritten and undocumented until now, an arbitrary time nearly exactly five years in the future.
On topic, this history seems quite real. I'm still a bit sceptical on it, though, since I didn't see it with my own eyes, but since there are people who can confirm... I think you're right, JTE.
The childish nature of the OP's reasoning is a priori fact. It is not manly to imply superiority while riding the coattails of someone else. You don't need further reading links for this kind of knowledge. If he had written his own game from scratch, it wouldn't have been as obvious. A real man (or woman) with significant accomplishments is not self-congratulatory because significant accomplishments are selfless in nature. Moreover, these kind of people don't even have time to brag because they're constantly working to improve things non-stop. Take a look at the vast majority of successful entrepreneurs still successful today: for every braggart their are at least ten very people-smart innovators who may brag that their accomplishments are superior, but never brag that they themselves are superior. The latter wreaks of insecurity.
Ideally the server script should have been written in C or some other language that can be precompiled to machine code or at least VM byte code in order to minimize the memory footprint as much as possible and eliminate the need to deploy and load an interpreter. Performance is priority number one these days, nobody seriously disputes this fact, and loading an interpreter to compile source on-the-fly is a lot like flying a plane to the Dairy Queen across the street. However, I can appreciate if he didn't have a lot of time to do that or didn't even think it would become a full-fledged server that would amount to anything. After all, a server appliance written against a protocol with no contractual obligations to third parties endures entropy to a much greater extent and both the capital and variable cost of productivity is higher for C over Perl. However, though Perl is a beautiful language and I've worked with it for years, I wouldn't use it for any process with a lifetime beyond a few seconds unless there was no alternative.
When I was young and foolish I too used to think my source code was sprinkled with gold, and I told myself people thought I was a genius because I wrote a tank video game in QBasic. It's just a cowardly excuse to sit and do nothing. It's telling people how awesome you are for climbing up to a plateau to avoid your cowardice of continuing on to the summit.
Then the way to earn respect is to build something that either relieves pain or removes barriers (whether people are aware of them or not). Not try to convince them on your own word.
And while we're on the topic of game coding, I'm looking for some people with OGRE experience, particularly concerning how the render queue works.
I was pretty late to the whole classic thing, right when MCLawl died out. I'm not sure to whether if you've collaborated with people like lawlcat or vallek, or in fact any other server util devs. What I'm sure of is you have at least some sort of connection - I've seen a comment in one of MCLawl's source file literally saying "a shameless copy from JTE server". (Once again, I was pretty late). With this, some of the "I created this" parts are quite believeable.
I am not sure about the rest (particularly the whole "I offered him help" thing, however; I do not have any proofs to support it, nor do I have any counter-proofs to disproove it.
I like you, VonKupps, and I believe that your reasoning is completely correct and justified.
I always regretted writing the server in Perl because indeed, my Perl was unthreaded and terrible at handling large amounts of data.
I had started writing a new server in C which would accept both Classic clients and Alpha SMP clients, but I didn't manage it in time.
I am well aware of the many flaws of character I had back then, and the somewhat different set of flaws I have now.
I don't even know why I'm here now, really. I guess I just wanted to exist in the public record, since indeed you can google around and find nothing. Now you know what happened, believe it or not, and that's all I could ask for.
Therefore, back to work for me. I'm still programming, it just hasn't been Minecraft related lately.

If it helps, I can confirm it. I was there, after all, at least partially.
I do maps and stuff.

That summer was fun as hell, though.
But it's real.
All right. I believe you, this seems pretty convincing.

Pretty much what this guy said.
