eh not really. The majority of mc videos are some random 8 year old uploading lp's
The real problem is, the majority is being punished by the stupidity of the few.
Even if its just some 8 year old making lps, they are still creating their own content because they made a somewhat unique (Albeit bad) video.
You have to understand that if Mojang did this in the very beginning Minecraft wouldn't be as popular as it is now, would it? No it wouldn't
I stand partially corrected...let me put it this way: Would you want to pay $27 for a game, that you have to pay even more money to play with your friends? I know I wouldn't
But if that is true, would you think Minecraft would be as popular as it is now?
Absolutely. However, it would be different. Servers, by and large, offer a very crappy gaming experience. It's the diamond in the rough that actually stands out and offers a high quality experience.
If Mojang enforced this from the start, there would be fewer, but higher quality servers, and paying $1-2/mo. for access to such an experience would be commonplace.
First: I'm glad that Mojang is clearly reading the discussion thread, and willing to try to clarify things.
I'd like to get clarification on one point in the FAQ.
My server features a currency that you can earn through gameplay, but which can also be bought for hard currency. Is that OK?
Soft currencies that are solely earned in-game are fine, but you cannot sell in-game currency for hard currency. Hybrid/dual currency systems are not allowed.
Let me give a specific setup as an example.
I have things that can be purchased, that are strictly graphical in nature. They are purchased with money.
And, I have things that affect game play, that are purchased through an in-game currency.
That is clearly allowed. That's not an issue.
Now, introduce one intermediate step: Both of these are given in-game representation.
I spend real money; I get an in-game item. That in-game item can be used to buy special hats, or clothing, etc.
I work in the game; I get a different in-game item. That item can be used to buy gameplay features.
As I understand it, so far, so good.
Now the question: Can I let players trade these items between themselves -- so that some players can trade the in-game currency (earned via play) for the out-of-game representation currency (generated by cash), so that people with lots of time can trade their time for the cash-only items, and people with cash can trade cash for the time-investment gameplay stuff?
To be clear: This is *not*: Spend $2, and get 4 hours worth of gameplay in game value.
This is: Spend $2, and get $2 worth of cash items; trade that with other players that have put in time, for whatever they will trade it for.
If this is OK, then what if there is an automated trading facility in game, so you don't have to hunt players down and trade in person?
If this is confusing, think EVE and the Plex License Extension; you spend cash for an in-game object that has trade value, but it's the in-game ISK that you earn that actually lets you do things in the game.

Is "Dyed leather" considered acceptable to sell, as clothing? Anyone can make plain leather armor. Can colored leather clothing -- only difference being color -- be something that is sold, with different colors being more expensive?
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
Absolutely. However, it would be different. Servers, by and large, offer a very crappy gaming experience. It's the diamond in the rough that actually stands out and offers a high quality experience.

Your not going to have to pay that much to play with your friends, realms and some other server providers are realivly cheap enough to be able to pay with the change you get from your lunch money after about 2 weeks at max.
Well Youtube videos are providing their own content, plus its advertising the game quite well. I don't see servers doing either of these
"Does the EULA still apply for access to user-created mods?
Yes. It doesn’t make a difference who made the mods, or how they were implemented onto your server. All mods require Minecraft to run. You are not allowed to charge for Minecraft features which affect gameplay."
Minigames and plugins are entirely player-built, do you not count this as providing their own content?

But then again, what if Mojang increased their prices? That would be absolutely tragic
Or maybe? Just maybe..... Some players arent dumb enough to stay on a server that is Pay-To-Win if they dont want to. NO ONE IS FORCING ANYONE, to stay on any server wether its Pay to win or not. This is the stupidest Mojang could do. If you dont like the Pay-to-win or gameplay advantages some server's offer, then just dont play on it... ITS THAT EASY.
If you expect to fund your server with mostly just donations...... violating the EULA.... and Mojang shuts you down.... FUND YOUR OWN server.

Honestly the don't play on it argument is not a very good one, there are around 15 milllion minecraft accounts and there will still be playing on those servers, so unless your a person like Nelson Mandela, your not going to change much on the server, since they will still be getting money and players will still be doing that.

To the person who created the plugin or minigame(Which most minigame servers just steal their ideas from other mini game servers) yes, but to a server who uses plugins made by other people and minigames made by other servers, which is the case most of the time, no.
Even if its just some 8 year old making lps, they are still creating their own content because they made a somewhat unique (Albeit bad) video.
Probably, their wont be many large servers yes, but those people will still be attracted to the game
Click them or they will click you
they would be better off just handing me over mojang and they could all open their own ikea.
Absolutely. However, it would be different. Servers, by and large, offer a very crappy gaming experience. It's the diamond in the rough that actually stands out and offers a high quality experience.

That's like making Rick Perry the president of the United States.
