Personally, I'm hoping for Sea Monkeys! I'm not sure how that would fit the description of "nasty"? But, whatever. Sea Monkeys in Minecraft would be totally awesome. Maybe for something super nasty, a mob modeled after the "Creature from the Black Lagoon?" It spawns in the deep, but crawls out of the depths at night and wanders close to the shore looking for victims to drag back into their watery graves. Mwahaha!
ROFL! I was just going to post Sea-Monkeys then I saw your post. Here are some pics of "nasty" sea-monkeys, heh heh.
Another must see!:
Or, they could change the color of the ender-mites and call them Triops. See in spoiler:
* OR.. If we are really lucky they will re-skin villagers into Mer-maids/Mer-men and have underwater villages for us to trade with.

I'm not sure if trading with a hostile mob is a good idea.
LOL, yeah, I got carried away, too much coffee too fast. Perhaps Raiding their villages would be in order.
But yeah, I didn't really think mermaids had anything to do with jebs post, I just wanted to throw the idea out there considering the incredible lack of ocean content. There are soooo many things that could be added for ocean content, they could devote a full update to nothing but that and still be lacking.

Hmm, Cannibal villages...
Imagine a horde of villagers chasing you through the jungle etc trying to catch and eat you (Or sacrifice you to notch), tee hee hee. Would be a new challenge anyway.

My favorite idea floating around probably is the anglerfish. Those things could be terrifying if done right,
As much as angler fish sounds nice, it's illogical.
We as players swim slowly in the water. For a fish to swim any faster than us would mean certain death. For it to swim equally as fast or slower -- that would just look awkward. "Why's this fish slowly hovering towards me?"
I still think a poisonous sea-urchin that you can maybe get stuck to briefly would work.
Imagine if it had a slight bit of web physics around edges and gave you cactus hurt AND chanced poisoning you? When you get away, you're about out of breath, and start getting hurt by drowning, as you're so close, racing to the surface, but you won't make it because you tangled with the beast and poison + drown = Dead Quick. Armor or not.
I don't think it's going to be a jellyfish, they don't really seem like a "nasty hostile mob", they kinda just float around. And it's not going to be a new squid variant (kids shouting Kraken, sit down) when squids are like the only mob in the ocean.
Hostile dolphin seems kind of weird, but it is true in real life, more people are raped to death by dolphins than eaten by sharks. With that in mind, however, adding hostile dolphins would be nothing short of a rape joke, which wouldn't belong in a game like Minecraft.
Personally, I think/hope that it's either a barracuda or some kind of fictional mob, maybe based on a prehistoric sea reptile (like a mesosaur or icthyosaur, but maybe a little smaller).
Also, ADD FISH AS A MOB! Jeb pls. With this new hostile sea creature, you could make it eat fish.
Sharks were my first thought as well, and I agree on the krakken (however you spell it), as that doesn't fit well because of the squids in my opinion. Although, it could be a variant of the squids...who knows?
My speculation is that they're adding some sort of humanoid-fish creature. We already have zombies and skeletons, and creepers are also slightly humanoid, so maybe some sort of fish man, possibly something reminiscent of a Dungeons and Dragons monster? Or possibly some boring ol' piranha-type fish? Either way, it's nice to see them adding (or at least considering) new hostile mobs. Keep up the good work, Mojang!
Well, lets see what we can get from disassembling the facts.
Jens mentions it's "Going to be nasty but doesnt do much right now". This is followed by compliments by dinnerbone and another Mojangster on its model.
So that said, it sounds unlikely that it will be a copy-paste of the Squid. He says it's not a shark, so that is obviously out of the question. Now as Jens said its going to be nasty, sounds either like a new Minecraft original (be it completly or something like an Ender-fish for irony), a sea serpent mob, or something close to a barricuda. Now this following the announcement of the new underwater temples and new "Prismarine" block, this mob may guard those two very things. Now seeing the pictures of the underwater temple, I doubt we'd see a sea serpent in a tight space like that, but still possible.
As for posts/ideas/speculation mentioned above and previous pages, Jellyfish, Kraken, and Sea urchin won't make sense. Same for pirhana. Why? Kraken is just a giant squid and more of a boss, Jellyfish is just plain almost immobile and have no real intent, Sea urchin is the same as Jellyfish, but more so, and Pirahna just flat out wont make sense as in real life, contrary to popular belief as with sharks, they are actually extremely timid. Pirahnas only start getting aggressive if you move to close to thier eggs, move around too much, or a rogue of the school gets gnarly.
Seeing with the new structure and block, sounds like it'll spawn there and may very well be a type of fish. We will not know until it is released.

in the Minecraft spirit.
Not sharks.
Already have squids
Possibly barracuda or piranha
More likely? Crocodiles.

Figured it was time for a change.
Dwarf Fortress carp.
Ebola
But, if it has to be, maybe it will be a piranha.
Well, it's my opinion, but I'd say to the underworld with peaceful water bodies.
But I agree with piranhas. Here are the choices we have now:
Piranha
Angler Fish
Leviathan/Sea Monster
