Yeah, I'm trying a wall of blocks outside a fence for my cows, but that doesn't seem to keep them in either. How about fences on TOP of a wall of blocks? Or just double-high blocks?
Lots of pics but not cutting them out as this is a potential fix...
I set up 6 fencings, overcrowded them and ran it for an hour and can confirm that both sitting around and chunk reloading glitches penned animals.
#1 single fence walled
#2 double fence on single block -(it is one block lower than surrounding land)
#3 single fence on single block
#4 single fence on double block
#5 double fence walled
#6 single fence
Starting
1 hour later
The 6th fencing has 3 (or more) chickens loose. (see image above)
The 5th has chickens loose/stuck between the fencing and wall.
1 is conspicuous in that NO chickens are stuck. Looking at 5 and 6 I conclude the chickens fled.
The 4th one (double stone single fence) is a confirmed killer of cows and sheep by suffocation if it's packed.
2-3 has yet to kill or lose my animals but 3 has a greater chance of escape as cows can jump unto the ledge of the cobblestone.
I have now played design #2 for 8 hours and have not lost any animals to death or glitch yet. Will report back if I do.
This is the layout again.
I made it 1 block lower than the surrounding ground in this screenshot though you can make it 2 blocks lower like in my actual game so it looks like a normal fence.that and the chance of escape is even lower.
Is it just me or is the original island with just seeds, bones and two saplings missing?
I never played the original skyblock, but I believe in later versions they excluded the seeds and only gave you a few items. This change was made on purpose and MegaTrain followed as faithfully as he could.
However, if you're completely missing a small grassy L shaped island with a tree then something is definitely wrong.
Is it just me or is the original island with just seeds, bones and two saplings missing?
My version is based on the "2.1" version of Noobcrew's original Skyblock map, which only had a lava bucket and ice block on the main island. My sand island and nether island are also based on the ones in this version.
I know other versions (1.0, 1.1, 2.0) had somewhat different configurations, but v2.1 is just the one that I was the most familiar with, and I thought had the best potential for an upgrade.

I think what you're actually experiencing there has more to do with the double-thickness block wall (because your pit is sunk down a block) than it has to do with the double-height fence.
So the double-thickness block wall keeps animals from glitching through to outside, but the fence on top keeps them from smothering when they start to glitch through the first block.
So what if you dug your pen down a single layer, then put just a one-high fence on top? Would that give you the same effect?
Oh, and here is my latest episode, Gold and Ghast Farming!!
Sorry for the wait on this episode, hopefully the next one will come sooner!
I am having trouble using this map on a server. After I have everything set up for the server and replace the world file, no one is able to connect to it because the game says the server is "old." Can someone help me?
The reason I ask is that if you spawn him under a 3x3 area of bedrock with air above that the wither cant move or harm you. It seems to me like the only way to kill him easily since he can break most blocks.
Ah, the piston/bedrock trick? (By Panda4994, popularized by Docm77) Yeah, that's pretty cheaty. I don't think that should be allowed. I was just thinking you'd spawn the wither on top or something.
Unless you want to try the trick under the original starting island, which has a single bedrock block.
If you beat the dragon, the portal back to the main world is mostly made of bedrock, right? That's probably a legit candidate, since it's generated by the game.

This looks like a great update to the classic SkyBlock map. I've almost finished playing through the original version so look forward to giving this one a go soon.

True. I had forgotten about that.
Sry, but I had to ask: Unless if I'm remembering this incorrectly, there are 3 diamond ores in the chest at the end. My question is: is it cheating to use a fortune pick on the ore to get moe diamonds?

Tails, make sure you're running Minecraft Server 1.7.4 or 1.7.5 and the clients are at the same version. I bet you are running 1.8 in the client. Also, remember to enable command blocks in the server.properties file
Hi, I'm definitely going to be LPing this map in the near future. I have another series I have to wrap up first, but I've been looking for a survival map that interests me for a while. The last map I really enjoyed in that genre was Sky Den, and before that, the original Skyblock. (I think Skyblock was my first Minecraft custom map, I cannot really remember) so this should be a fresh survival start for me.
I cannot promise to complete every objective, like the automatic farm, things like that (I'm not the best when it comes to redstone or anything to do with wiring) but I can complete most of the more achievable ones.
So when I've uploaded the episodes, would you want me to post them here on the forum, so you can see them? I'll obviously leave a link to the forums, and to your Youtube channel in the description, a fair formality on my part.
Well, anyways, I cannot wait to start recording this map. I'm sure it will benefit my survival skills a lot, I mean, it has been a long while since I did survival.
Awesome! I'll be excited to watch, and hear what you think of the changes. Sure, you can post to this thread, if you like.

Spoily answer:
That's kind of the only reason I included diamond ore instead of just diamonds! So totally allowed!

Welp, a creeper managed to spawn in a gap in my lighting system and blew up four of my precious, precious, dirt blocks.
MegaTrain, thanks for showing me how to make a mob spawner that lets me actually farm stuff without worrying about getting blown up. I actually managed to get 3 iron bars; now I just need to decide what I want to use them for...
Question, though...how are you supposed to make an enchanting table? Near as I can tell there's no way to make obsidian.

Actually, there are three ways to get obsidian, but one method requires you to have already acquired some.
1) The Nether Portal Method
This one is a well know method. Make a second portal a good distance away from your first one. Go through it. In the nether, mine the exit portal, then walk back to your first portal. Go back to the Overworld. Walk to second portal, go through it. It will generate a new portal that you can mine. Of course, you need to gather Obsidian to make a second portal so really, this idea isn't as good at the other 2 listed below.
2) The End Platform Method
This one is simple. Every time you enter the end, it regenerates the platform you spawn on. Just mine it, leave, and re-enter the end. Easy obsidian. Of course, if you want enchanted gear before entering the end well, that's where you will need method three. Also, the spikes in the end? 99.9% obsidian 0.01% bedrock, so mine those to your hearts content.
3) The Redstone Method
Now this is an old and rather unusual method to get Obsidian. When lava flows ON TOP OF (in other words when it falls onto it) redstone dust WHILE is has flowing water next to it, on the same layer it produces obsidian. How? No-one know for sure, some say it is some fancy quirk in game mechanics that causes the redstone to "Super-heat" into a brief lava source block, which instantly freezes into obsidian due to the water. Other say magic. Personally I prefer magic. It seems cooler. Wait, no redstone? Well get trading then.
Quick image reference for those who are confused.
This is what it should look like before you add the lava.
Add the lava at the end, give it some time...
And there you go, 4 pieces of obsidian to mine. (Remember to remove the lava first. Only you can prevent death by swimming in lava)

Yeah, but the problems are that:
1) You can't trade because there are no villagers. The only way to get villagers is to transform zombie villagers, but you can't do that without a potion, and you can't get potions without obsidian.
2) You can't mine obsidian because there's no diamonds. The only way to get diamonds would be to trade, but see point 1.

Of course you can get potions without obsidian - a brewing stand requires a blaze rod and three cobble. Then, all you need is sugar, a spider eye, a brown mushroom, three glass blocks (for bottle), an apple and eight gold bricks.
You see, this is why I like these maps, because we all work together, even though they are separate single-player worlds. Someone has an issue, someone most likely will have a primary answer, then everyone else fills in the small blanks that the main answer misses.
Been thinking about starting this map, but I'm not sure about whether to stream or record it, or just to play it quietly in the background...

Yeah, me too. I always considered Skyblock to be the ultimate "Minecraft tutorial". Most of what I've learned I learned on the original Skyblock.
I'm kind of confused, is this a piece of dirt surrounded by nothing? That's what I see.. I don't mean to be annoying or to devaluate your work or anything, but it seems to me that's pretty basic? And how can I mine in it.

The challenge of a minimum-resource map like this is to do the most with the least starting materials.
A few ideas to get you started:
Be very careful with the dirt and grass, this may be all you get, and you'll need it for all sorts of things (growing food, planting trees, spawning sheep)
Chop down the tree, hope it drops several saplings, and re-plant more trees. Infinite wood!!
You can use the lava and ice to create a simple cobblestone generator. Infinite cobblestone!
Gather a bunch of resources, and explore the nearby islands, to see what they hold, and what you might be able to do with the resources there. Go through the challenges book and see if you can accomplish the items in the list!

Did some testing and also found out this bug is well documented (https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-2025) bug.

Sorry, I don't know anything about working with custom maps on servers. I'm sure you could find help in the "Server Support" forum? http://www.minecraftforum.net/forum/152-server-support/

Getting a zombie villager back to normal is still going to be a pain, but the dependency loop I thought was there actually isn't.
