Currently in Minecraft there are items that would make sense to be used as fuel, but cannot be used as fuel.
So what I'm suggesting is that they become a valid fuel source when smelting / cooking, which will be a good way to recycle old items.
Here are the items I feel should be used as fuel, and I will sate how many items they can smelt / cook.
And just for kicks:
-Gunpowder - Results in small explosion.
-Firework star (all variants) - Results in colourful small explosion (based on firework star variant).
-Firework (all variants) - Results in colourful small explosion (based on firework variant).
EDIT:
As for these "small explosions" (Since people have been asking about them, and I really haven't elaborated on them due to them being a last minute thought I threw out upon completion), the damage will hurt Mob / Players (Compared to a creepers explosion, it would be a quarter of its force / damage output, but with the same blast radius / Size), but as for surrounding blocks an whatnot, it'll only destroy the furnace itself, which will drop its contents inside (however like I said; the furnace will be obliterated / not dropped), also upon dropping its content inside, 1-3 of those items will be smelted / cooked (yeah... the explosion smelted / cooked those items, crazy eh? This is how its relevant to the topic.). This will make these explosions not an easy Grief / Troll mechanic, but rather more so for laughs out of dumb curiosity... But if one happens to die from this act due to having like, half a heart, their death message will be something along the lines as: "player" died in an unfortunate smelting accident (It's actually a joke from that movie Goldmember in the Austin Power series), or, something?
Pretty Good idea, but then if people don't have fuel around they could just chuck in any random things which are included on the list, like a stack of leaves or something.

Well if they didn't have fuel, then they couldn't fuel the furnace... the things included on the list are fuel so I don't know where you're getting at. Since leaves are so abundant, and easy to get via shears, one only has the potential to cook / smelt 0.25 items. 64 leaf blocks would only cook / smelt 16 items (the equivalent potential of 2 coals).
Beds in a furnace? No, that concept alone ruins the suggestion. I'm joking actually, every single thing mentioned in this suggestion is so good it hurts a little. Not a lot. Just a little. Support. +rep.
Well like any explosion, it destroys, so yes it will destroy the Furnace... Unless /Mobgriefing = False.
Would it be a TNT-like explosion or a mob-based explosion. If mobGriefing turns it off, then I am assuming that it is mob-based. Basically, is the explosion effect like a TNT explosion, or like a creeper explosion?
Oh, and I see no reason not to support this simple suggestion that should have been done ages ago.

Mob greifing shouldn't be able to turn the explosives off, since the explosion is not caused by a mob. However, the explosion itself could be used as a greifing tool. The explosion power should be by default 1, in which cannot destroy the basic materials, such as cobblestone, equivalent to that of a ghast's fireball.

Full support!
Did a mob cause the explosion? No, it is logical at its most that the explosion functions as a TNT explosion.
Okay, gunpowder kills the furnce. But would fireworks and firework stars do the same? Since these don't do any damage when they are set off.
huh... Well with that logic, I suppose they shouldn't have any destructive force when exploding within a furnace as well then. It will just be a bang and a colourful blast in your face But would you want it to?

Mob based is what I'm trying to go for :| ..if it's even possible because I just don't want adventure maps to become flawed because of the change.
And @ SmiliezZ7a: I'll fix that right away! Thanks for pointing that out. I should have know they were already fuel sources...

Do not worry about adventure maps. Adventure maps should be played in the dedicated version they were made on. If anything, furnaces should get a new CanExplode tag, in which is by default 1. If set to 0, the furnace cannot be exploded. This way, those who want furnaces to be able to explode, and have mobGriefing off can rejoice. A neat ExplosionPower tag can also be thrown in there, which is be default to 1, and can be changed to make the explosion stronger.

That is not entirely true; I was only using mob-based as the main example since it is the most obvious one (i.e. creeper explosions). That doesn't necessarily mean it has to be caused by a mob. The only reason I was confused is because he said that mobGriefing disables the explosion (or at least block damage from it).
Furthermore, the only real difference between mob and TNT explosions is that TNT does much more damage, destroys more, and has black particle effects. Also, TNT is not disabled by mobGriefing.
Hence, I was merely asking which of the two it would look like and function as.

Critiquing is easy. Creating is difficult.
