I want to start a minecraft server on my dell poweredge 1850 but before i can even get started on that(i will probably ask about farther steps lader) i need to install a Linux OS on it i was trying to install Ubuntu because it is my favorite Linux operating system but i dont know what version is compatible with it so if you know that would be helpful
Step 1. Put Ubuntu on an empty flash drive (min 2g)
Step 2. Jam F2 to go into BIOS
Step 3. Change boot order for your FlashDrive to spot 1
Step 4. Follow the install process
If you are expecting to use the GUI then I would recommend against Ubuntu, some of its derivatives that run LXDE would be fine. Use 14.04 there should be no problems with it.
i know ubantu server dosent have gui and i installed it fine now how do i set up minecraft on it(i inteend to use mcp+ so i can have my mod pack)
If you need to ask this question I would suggest getting a GUI and doing it that way. When I deal stuff on headless boxes I build a lot of config files on a workstation and then put them on the server using scp. Then you just need to launch the shell script you have to start the server.

If you don't know how to install Java and things without a GUI you just need to learn Linux/Ubuntu in general I would start here.
https://help.ubuntu.com/14.04/serverguide/package-management.html
I would go untill you reach remote management once you reach that you should be alright.
