In the 1.8 snapshots, you can use rotation arguments (rx and rxm for up/down, ry and rym for left/right) with target selectors (@p, etc.) to limit command effects to players who are looking in certain directions.
For example, to give the nausea effect to anyone within r blocks of (x,y,z) who is looking down more than 45 degrees:

And then you would be able to configure that to only apply to players who are near this pit.

You'd be able to configure it so that it only tests for players who are within a cubic area, or within a radius, of the pit. The pit would need to be under a controlled environment.
