Hi everyone. I have a website, but I don't host it own my own. I don't have access to the computer that hosts it either, however I do have access to the inner workings of the site. I was hoping there was a way i could host a minecraft server using a subdomain of the site as the ip. And preferably hosting the server off the site as well, i only have a laptop and would like to maintain the server when the computer is shut off. Is there any way to do this? Thank you for your input!
Even for long term hosting renting is usually the better answer. With home hosting you can run into serious bandwidth issues and some ISPs will shut down your service as game server hosting breaks their ToU

well some ISPs suck i guess. if your machine can handle it and you have enough bandwith, then home hosting is far better. theres no ram restrictions, slot restrictions, hard drive restrictions, its free, and you have more controll over it.

It's not free. You pay for a internet line (you'll need a business line with a static IP and a SLA on bandwidth, not to mention enough upload capacity), power, hardware, and replacement parts if anything fails. You will also have worse uptime than a professionally-hosted one, as you will not have replacement parts on hand to fix your server if there's issues, and a single power outage will knock everything offline.

it is free if you already pay for internet. and you dont need a static IP. a sticky one + a free domain one works fine. and if you buy a high quality machine at frist then youll get better performance for your server. i have a normal 15dl/1ul line from my Isp and i never lag. and who cares if your uptime isnt a perfect 100%? its not the end of the world..

Good luck getting enough bandwidth on a common residential line. Want to stream a movie, download a game? Hello lag on your server. Your players won't enjoy that...
Yes, you can put whatever large number you want to put there, but that doesn't mean you'll be able to actually host that many. Also, many hosts won't restrict the number of slots open (they just give recommendations)
Hard drives cost money and if it fails because it will be running 24/7 (something your standard desktop HDD isn't built for) then goodbye everything on your computer/server

RAM costs money and motherboards have a restriction on the maximum amount of ram that can be added

Monthly internet costs, energy costs and buying replacement parts is definitely not free...
If you want full control then go with a host that offers root access or rent a VPS/Dedicated server
EDIT:
you'll host maybe 10 people on that, and that's if you don't stream movies or try to download anything
so how much would a 16GB server with full acsess to 4 cores running at 4GHz and 620GB of space cost per month?
and i could host 30 ppl if i wanted on my current bandwith.

While I'm not the best example (I got a deal), I'm paying $49 for a server with 16GB RAM, 4 threads at 3.1GHz, and a 500GB HDD (not to mention 1TB @ 1gbps, which is MUCH better than ANY residential line you'll get in the states, unless you're lucky enough to live in a Sonic.net beta area).

My munin, iftop and vnstat tracking all contradict you on that matter. 1mbps could hold 10 people max without lag.
and do you share that machine with other servers or do you have it all to yourself?
plus for like @20 more a month i could get 3MB upload and host 30 ppl just fine.
For 10 people, sure. But if you want to run a bigger server you'll need a business class line which can cost more then renting a dedi easily. Plus you'll need to leave your home desktop running 24/7. Your basic desktop hardware isn't built for that (like I stated above) and the hardware will fail

well yea if you want to have a 100 slot server. but a basic destop dosnt cost $1,200
a custom build gaming PC (not alienware. alienware sucks) such as the one i have, can run for 10 hours at a time and the (i5 2500K quadcore @4.3 GHz) CPU stays steadly at 38celcius. (for non-computer nerds 38C is pretty cool for a CPU). if you have powerful equipment at home and are planning on a 30-40 slot server or less then home hosting is far better
plus you get a super powerful computer at your disposal!

So? For $50/mo I have 1000x your current upload speed, dedicated (unshared) hardware, a SLA on bandwidth, a dedicated IP, full legal ability to run my server, and free support/KVM/hardware replacement. Oh yeah, and better transit and line quality than your residential line, as well as uninterrupted power. My provider even owns their own datacenter. I had some RAM die on me at one point, it was quick and easy to have them fix it, and didn't cost me a penny (or more than a few minute's downtime).

ok so $100 per month. thats $1,200 a year with no ssd.
my computer costed $1,400 with an SSD and i can use it as long as i want..

Yep! 100% dedicated hardware, full network line, the only limitation in place is bandwidth (and 1TB is quite a bit!).
