that can not be a legit/trusted source.

If you read the replies, he links to his source. Also this:
Spout does NOT ADD BLOCKS. Spout is NOT A MINECRAFT server software. Spout is a JAVA VOXEL GAME engine. The Vanilla plugin adds default Minecraft functionality. Do you know why it doesn't add blocks? Because you can join the Spout with Vanilla server with the DEFAULT MINECRAFT client.
It is as simple as designing a texture and defining a constructor that calls a few methods to add a block to Vanilla.
People complain about having to install a launcher that takes about 1 minute and isn't required to log into the server (unless the owner wants it to be), but they're perfectly fine with TEKKIT, of all things? Something is wrong with that argument.
Not to mention, how can you count the amount of blocks that "Spout" has? You can create plugins to make virtually any block you want. There's even a plugin that lets regular users not familiar with java make their own custom blocks and items, MoreMaterials.
Tekkit is a dead end - it's a static set of mods all revolving around one theme, as far as I know, and it requires every player to be running the exact same mods. Spout is the future of Minecraft.
(And Spoutplugin is A PART OF BUKKIT, and Spout will have BukkitBridge, so there's no point in claiming that Bukkit has "more" stuff.)
Honestly, the anti-Spout sentiment that gets spread around the Minecraft community is ridiculous. I don't understand why you people hate what is clearly the future of Minecraft.

Will there be any benefits to this new API? I thought the entire point of integrating it was to create a new setup that would allow for plugins that introduce new blocks/items (that's what I've been looking forward to). If the new API is basically the same as Bukkit, what's the point? Are there any benefits to it?
In your opinion, will most of the current Bukkit plugin developers simply move their plugins over to the new API, so we can still have core plugins like WorldGuard and things like that, or will they be so vastly different that it will be unlikely for the current plugins to be ported?
If you're talking about the Mojang API, I don't think anyone knows.
If you're talking about the Spout API, it will have a LOT more features than Bukkit. Spout will be able to create custom blocks, items, armour, entities, you name it... from what I've been told, you could create an entirely new game if you wanted to (currently, Spoutplugin can only create custom blocks and items, and GUIs). Basically, every mod in existence should be able to be replicated on the finished Spout project. Additionally, BukkitBridge should be able to port most of the current Bukkit plugins, and regular Minecraft clients should be able to log into a Spout server just fine (although, as with Spoutplugin, they won't get the spout features without the client).
You should ask someone like Wulfspider or Afforess if you want more detailed information :).

I just wish it would happen already. I'm sick of having all my non-Tekkit servers on hold because of this seemingly endless wait for some watered down crap version of Bukkit by the great Mojang. (LOL)
My main thoughts/questions are-
Minecraft is Bukkit first off. They're obviously a 100 years in the future of development if Mojang stayed at their sluggish pace. Bukkit doesn't even edit in game items, blocks or anything! Is this going to be WORSE than having CraftBukkit? That's what I'm worried about. Them throwing configurability out the window and just making it where every noob can set a couple check marks, hit "Play" and have a server with all the plugins I have and took 95% less time to do; plus lacking how in depth you can get into setting up plugins etc. This would be eliminating my hobby, my "job" per se, and pretty much ruining my whole outlook on Minecraft. It's just seems from all these updates we are doing less mining and crafting, and more slashing and endless adventuring across consistent terrains and never ending tunnels of cave spiders. What happened?
I'm a fan of Spout, it's just always been too far in the development stage for me to use consistently. There is always problems with it and other things. Though THAT is exactly where Mojang needs to kick Minecraft towards.
Lastly, doesn't the main company Mojang have like 100 million+ dollars now?? Why continue this project in Java at all. Why not use all that money to take every concept, every Bukkit plugin and turn it into options, and every mechanic this game has... and basically create the game of all games? Put it on its own engine, it doesn't have to be far out extremely beautiful Crytek 69 or anything. It'd seem like a far better idea from a marketing stand point and a developers view IMO. Imagine this game not being hindered by Java!

Well, it's going to be a completely new API, and it's not just by Mojang, the original Bukkit developers are also working on it.

Minecraft is not Bukkit. Minecraft is classed as an 'Adventure Game' since 1.0.

It is estimated ready for production servers in a couple of months I think.

Happy Minecrafting none-the less!
People say Java is bad, and comparing it to something like C#, it is. Do you know why? Because something like C# is Windows-Only. Java threw a lot of functionality and performance out the window when they went multi-OS. They can't harness features of a partivular OS, because they are all supported. Mojang has more like 10 million dollars than 100 million anyway, and creating a programming language takes years. It would also not be possible for them to make it Windows-only now, because of all the Linux and Mac users who have bought the game already.

I'm aware of this, I'm just saying it's most likely going to be less configurable, and made easier. Therefore you will lose all of the uniqueness in Minecraft servers. These servers are all special because most of the time, none are alike. Simply due to the plugins as well. They're like fingerprints. If it becomes all implemented, it will become watered down and eliminate my job. Which isn't outlandish because it seems to be the current path this game is taking anyways.
Minecraft is not Bukkit. Minecraft is classed as an 'Adventure Game' since 1.0.
You took me literally. I'm saying in essence. Minecraft is Bukkit, because 90% of servers are Bukkit. With Bukkit the only vanilla aspects you have is the vanilla mechanics, and vanilla models/items. Everything else is non-vanilla. So of course Minecraft is NOT Bukkit. It's just everything Minecraft is, is because of Bukkit.

Production of such wouldn't be realistic in an "upgrade" format. It'd be a new release. Minecraft 2 if you will. They have more than 10 million dollars. First off, 6 million purchased PC accounts. That's $120,000,000. (Still not exact, it's over that.) There are over 30 million registered users besides the 6 million purchased. This is still not including ad money, merchandise, their affiliation with 4j for porting the code over to Xbox, and even more to put out there. Where does all this money go? It's definitely not going towards the development of a Java game. That's more than enough money to just hand the game over to Valve or something and let them make something ridiculously beautiful out of it on their already perfected engine. You could even keep the current Minecraft forever, if it's a swedish brotherhood type of thing going on. The possibilities are endless when you have that much money. Taking "years" to write your own new code is a terrible excuse.

There will still be just as much configuration and permissions to do, I have no idea what you're talking about.

Around 2 Million were bought in Alpha, when Minecraft was only £8, and another 2.5 Million in Beta, when it was only £12, it's now £16.95. I believe the listed price also includes VAT. And it is split between the developers, not kept in the Mojang piggy bank, a lot of developers might not want to do it anyway. Notch doesn't even work on Minecraft anymore, and jeb says he is supporting modding but has actually trebled the amount of .CLASS files in Minecraft, making it hard as **** for MCP to update.
And if they ported away from Java, they wouldn't be developing the original version, and people on incompatible OS to the new supported one would be mad. I firmly believe Minecraft should stay in Java. If it didn't, the new API would need rewriting in that language. The thing that might make some people mad is that Spout would stay in Java and then would get loads more users. So actually it wouldn't be that bad.

This isn't helping the argument much. That's still around $80mil from just the PC accounts, with your off statistics. Those prices were higher all throughout, even now it is $26/£21. Plus all this stuff. Not to mention the $8mil made within the first 24 hours of the Xbox release, at $20ea and 400k sales. Plus their ad money. I think you're missing the point still. Yes, this would be impossible with the current developers. Why? Because they are not great at developing games. This whole "Minecraft" spiel was simply a fluke for them and it is VERY obvious (I still love the hell out of this game, no offense to the makers of this game). Of course it'd be hard as heck for them to keep a game updated that isn't Java. That's why I'm saying use all that money to generate not only MORE money, but a higher quality game. There would be different developers, not these guys.(Allowing the current release of Minecraft to still never end.) You pay some one else. This game has the potential to be every game.

We'll see about this. Regardless it's eliminating me, the server developer.

Go. Away.
Spout. Is. NOT. A. Minecraft. Software.
Until people in this thread understand that, they can get lost.
How can Spout have more blocks when it doesn't replicate Minecraft? It can't. The Vanilla plugin provides Minecraft functionality, but the whole point is that it's Vanilla so there are no extra blocks.
I am now going to report any posts after this one that don't read the OP.
And so Tekkit has more blocks than default Spout. Default Spout Client allows you to play what will be hundreds of games when it is done. All of which are customizable by plugins.
Tekkit is also going to die with Bukkit, so nobody cares anyway.
Furthermore, if anyone is here to troll, go off topic, or insult Spout / The API / Bukkit in a not constructive way, I will report them and request their post deleted.
^Read two lines and quoted me from there. No discussion from rest of post.

Read, don't scan.
I already converted everything. I've done my research. I'm on topic.
So, you're the one who is trying to be an egotist here.
I haven't even got into the figures from Minecraft PE Edition, and you wanna talk about Mojang only having $10 million? Or it costing less than $20 on PC when it costs that much on Xbox alone? How can I follow any credibility on your OP if you can't even discuss anything pertaining to this subject. You can only deny and provide false statistics? Do your research, stop scanning, and then post!
I'm done here. I'll find some one who will read my replies and actually have a discussion, rather than trying to disprove my points.

BTW
£21.25 ≠ £16.95
I looked on the Minecraft website 10 minutes ago and it said the game is currently £16.95. I never said they had $10 million, you are the one who is scanning, I said closer to 10 million than 100 million, that could be as much as $55 million.
If this thread is on topic then request it to be moved to another section. Since this is off topic
What the actual ****? No offense, but that makes no sense... This is not the Off Topic section, this is the Server Administration section...
The point of this thread is to discuss the situation with Bukkit, Spout and the Official API, but some people are posting completely irrelevant, or just pants on head retarded, things.

Still very off, none-the less.
Sorry, I was confused about your British pound with the Euro, your conversion is correct.
PE Edition being cheap regardless is an extra £8 x 1mil+ extra on top of what I had already stated.

Why buy Call of Duty: Black Ops ?
Why buy Halo 4?
Why buy World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade?
Why buy Shivering Isles for Oblivion?
More content, more money, more people, more possibilities, and better quality/performance.
Instead, lets milk the udders of easy route- Java.
The funny thing is the only one of those games I did buy is Black Ops, and that's because:
New zombie maps
New zombies weapons
And that's it
And anyway, if Mojang were to hand development over to others, they wouldn't get that much money. I think (not taken from anywhere official) that Mojang get less than 50% of the profit from X360 edition anyway, so it would probably be similar with a new version developed by someone else.
And the thing is, they get about a thousand sales a day from PC, so why bother doing it? Mojang are pretty rich already.

you are the one who should get warned and reported. basically you were calling every people that do not know what spout is "Retarded"
all of this spout vs bukkit vs mojang vs minecraft vs api is just speculations for now. we do not have the rights to judge before we see the real product.
spout is great, yeh.
But in my opinion people who supported spout seems to be like arrogant. Spout has more features yes, but it doesent make bukkit a failure.
I go on spout forums and bukkit forums and i can see spout fans, and a dev from spout throwing hate at bukkit.
You can be vocal yes, but i do not think it is the right way.
all of this spout vs bukkit vs mojang vs minecraft vs api is just speculations for now. we do not have the rights to judge before we see the real product.
Actually it's just Bukkit starting arguments with Spout.
I'm a server owner myself and I'm going to tell you my plans for the future and explain them so hopefully it can help out others who don't know what to do. One of the reasons I got into Minecraft about a year ago was seeing a video on Youtube showing off the IC2 mod. I didn't know how to mod back then so I forgot about that dream for a while. At first I ran a server on the Network at my house for my sister and me and soon I discovered Bukkit and switched to that (at first I just used the vanilla server). I heard about Bukkit Contrib but never acually used it, just kept my eye on it. And then Spoutplugin came around and it made me remember the IC2. I was very excited for its future and immediatly added it to my Bukkit server. Then in Oct. I started up a public server and have always had some Spout plugins on it for Spoutcraft users. Then at the beginning of the year they decided that they would do more of what they want if they made there own server. Reading of what the new server software will provide, I remembered my IC2 dreams. So now I'm still still using a Bukkit server with the Spoutplugin and on the side I play some modded fun on a private server with IC2, Buildcraft, and Redpower. Now you have the back story, now for the future. I have all intentions of using the new Spout server since my current dream is in my main city on my public server (NewZona) I want to have electric to every house there, and a virtual internet connection (yes using the internet, inside the internet xD). And on that virtual internet, I want players to be able to play games on there virtual computers. And I only see that possible with the Spout software. Since its a voxel engine, I see it possible to play a game within the game. And so much more. I just don't see the offical API doing that since that is just Minecraft. I want to go beyond Minecraft. And Bukkit definitively isn't going to provide that. And for the players, all they have to do is download a .jar or .exe file, click it and login, volia! As soon as they connect to my server, it should download everything they need and install it. Simple, and my server will be a gateway to other games then.
tl;dl Spout will allow for more than Minecraft to be played, while bukkit (which will most likely die after the offical API), and the Offical API is just Minecraft.

Happy Minecrafting none-the less!

Indeed, but Bukkit is a zombie.
We'll see about this. Regardless it's eliminating me, the server developer.

Thanks you.
PandazNWafflez please calm, and btw if you were to download Tekkit and Spout, with out installing any mods, then Tekkit would have more items.
If you read my post, £ != $.
Go. Away.
Spout. Is. NOT. A. Minecraft.
From now on, this thread is on topic.
Discuss the OP. Stop being trolls.
^Read two lines and quoted me from there. No discussion from rest of post.
Protip:

Here is where it says £16.95: http://www.minecraft.net/store
Also PE is cheap. About £8.00 (that was when my friend bought it a couple of months ago).
I am fine with discussing the situation with porting to another language:
It's not going to happen because:

Incorrect, try harder. I didn't call people who didn't know what Spout was retarded.
Actually it's just Bukkit starting arguments with Spout.
Nobody said Bukkit was a failure, but it is a zombie.
In honesty the Bukkit fans are the arrogant people (see below).
Afforess doesn't particularly like the Bukkit team for these reasons:
tl;dl Spout will allow for more than Minecraft to be played, while bukkit (which will most likely die after the offical API), and the Offical API is just Minecraft.
