None, Excluding the TooManyItems mod, Which I installed after I found out we were unable to craft the items in SMP.
Okay I've been searching these forums for hours and I cant find anything. Nobody else seems to have these problems. Your sure you are installing the SMP version and not the single player version? I'm really sorry that I'm not of more help, I honestly have no idea what the problem is :/
I don't know a thing about setting up servers and I have been poking at it for a good while. I can get the server to start generate a world and allow me to log in but I can't seem to get a IP to assign to it nor get other players in. How can I fix this? Thanks in advance.
where is says server ip: in the server.properties file, what are you putting there? It should be blank.
What Ip are you giving to other people? are you giving them this one?
How can i do that i can only use the /give commands?
either only op your self if you are using the software from minecraft.net, or if you are using bukkit, make a group for yourself, and give it all commands, then remove the /give or /item command from all the other groups.
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to help people =)
My son left me the 'keys' to his server while he went off to work for a few months. The server is not on his computer, he uses a hosting company and basically showed me how to stop/start the server. So to say the least - I'm not familiar with server issues, plugins etc.
Two days ago the map got corrupted (again). A fellow from another thread is helping with this. But in the mean time, what are the steps to replace the corrupted world with the backup?

Again, thank you for your time.
it depends. I'm assuming you have a backup somewhere, so what format is it in? Most likely, its in a zip format, so just extract it, then replace the old world file (should be named something like "World") with the unzipped backup one. Everything should be like it was before, assuming that backup is recent, and that it was correctly backup in the first place.
Hope this helps, and if you need anything else just let me know.
I did manage to replace the corrupted file with the backup. It works fine aside from some odd errors I am getting on the console, not often, but enough to add lag when it does show up. It says something like -
[SEVERE] at java.net.SocketOutputStream.socketWrite and a few more much like this, then the lag, then everyone gets booted endofstream. This has only happened three times today, but it still worries me. Do you have any idea what is causing this?
Yeah I've been having this same issue since beta 1.6 came out. I think its a bug that 1.6 introduced. and should be fixed soon. As far as I know there is nothing you can do yet.
I don't feel safe using teamviewer but I would like to hire you to help me set up a server. Please pm me. I'm at my wits end and I want to make a server that me and my buddies can play on.
@tohclan can you post a screen shot of the console logs? It might help me to understand what the problem is.
@turgidlog if you don't feel comfortable using teamviewer, I can let you use it on mine for a bit. if not, then how would you like me to help you? just let me know, I don't care either way, just a bit easier on teamviewer
It seems to have fixed itself. I asked my son, and he said these errors started after the game went from alpha to beta. Seems people who brought their maps over, received these errors. He also said something about map generation (he lost me there) Anyways, you had mentioned that people are getting this same error in 1.6 build, perhaps it is related?
I do have a question though, do you have any idea what causes map corruption in SMP? Every 6weeks or so our maps get corrupted and always in spawn town. This has happened on 5 different maps so far. We use no hacks, only basic plugins - bukkit, permissions etc. I would really love to find an answer so we can avoid it, seems no one can offer advise on this. Oh and we use a hosting company for our server needs, so it's not because we are running it from our computer.
Well, the only times the map corrupted on us, was that we didnt shut down the server properly. How do you restart the server/ turn it off?
Also, what do you mean by "corrupted"? Like are things just not saved? Or the map is just completely unusable? If the later is the case, do you get any kind of error?

We shut MC down from the console (putty?)And very rarely do we shut down the server. The only time we do, is if the console is frozen or scrolling so many errors we can not stop it.
Our corruption is described as major lag, chunks missing, inverted chunks, map regeneration. For example, this last corruption was in spawn town and when a player was in this area, the console scrolled so fast I could not read it. Yet when they left the area, the scrolling and lag stopped. This was so heavy on the server that we are using 25gigs of space at the moment.
Things we have tried: Very little terraforming near/in spawn town this includes no mining in the area. No tall builds. No hacks. Everything is crafted and made. No mcedits anyplace in the world. The only reason we have made these rules is because we are looking for similar incidents from each map, hence the above.
The only other thing that we have been doing since map 1 is move the spawn point. I keep wondering if moving spawn location has something to do with the map seed and generation? Something in the coding (whatever plugin moves spawn) is somehow triggering this?
Remember when beta first came out and there was a huge number of missing chunks (lag holes)? Like everyone else we were getting these as well, and again in spawn town. When this particular map corrupted, the chunks that were lag holes inverted, and regenerated into new terrain after the corruption.

You said that these were like the beta holes when beta first came out, so when a player leaves the game and rejoins, are these problems gone?
I've been doing some reaserching on this, and so far I've come across a few things that could cause this to happen. This is only if rejoining does not fix the errors.
1)are you using tnt? Not one or two blocks here and there, I'm talking about lots of it. Like 50+ depending on how good your server is.
2) This is going to sound stupid, but does the server ever shut down unexpectedly, and that is what causes the corruption?
3) You said you are using 25 gigs of space. Do you have unlimited space on the server? As in hard drive space, not ram. This is what was getting us for a while. We didn't have enough space for the server to save, so it started not saving at all, or overwriting old parts of the map. Could this be what is happening to you?
I'll keep researching and see if I can dig anything else up, but let me know if any of these could be causing it.
Any chance you can help me? I got teamviewer if needed.

Will it ever get easier to put up a server?
contact info, the files, stuff like that would be nice.

Will it get easier to put a server up? Well, its actually pretty easy once you get used to it, but its getting used to everything that is the problem.
Just email me when you are ready for the teamviewer thing, I'll try to get on as soon as I can.
