Ok, gonna take a round about method here.
Try running MultiMC. See if minecraft will run with that launcher. It'll eliminate your minecraft install as a possible problem. It installs minecraft to a different location of your computer. What ever folder you put it's exe file into.
So don't put it on the desktop it'll add a bunch more files.
You can make a new folder on the desktop and then put it in that folder.
There are some videos in the MultiMC thread that explain how it works if you need help figuring it out, watch those.
I ran MultiMC and ran a new instance called Minecrafttwo and it hung as usual with Java.exe using from 40% to 99% of the CPU. I once again used the task manager to close the program.
Here is the error report:

This line (Fixed Minecraft Path: Field was private static java.io.File net.minecraft.client.Minecraft.an) causes me to think it's either your java install or and antivirus interfering with Java/minecraft. But to be perfectly honest I'm not sure, your error isn't anything I remember having dealt with prior.
I have done that already. The Oracle website bot had said that there may have been older versions of Java that could cause problems. I uninstalled every version of Java on my cpu, and made it install the very latest. This was the report I got from Oracle/Java when I had their widget check my version: (I included it in my system specs previous)
"Your Java configuration is as follows: Vendor: Oracle Corporation, Version: Java SE 7 Update 09, Operating System: Windows XP 5.1, Java Architecture: 32-bit"

Ok, um, I did try it already with the AV "real time scanning" turned off. It made no difference. If the virus software never caused problems before why would it now, I wonder? I blame Java/Oracle.
My husband suggests that we just go find a cheap computer at our local computer shop with Windows 8 on it, and all the speed and ram we need. (He's a scientific imaging software programmer but this Java game stuff is outside his experience.) I am sad that I can't play with my son, and it is an expensive solution. I guess I will have to make it my Christmas present.

p.s. I only have 5 more post I can make, since I am a new MC Forum user. I should have put this one together with the previous one. C'est la vie

For my solution to come about Elizabeth I had to check my graphics card drivers main website and discovered a convenient little application where is checked for EVERYTHING my graphics card needed to run. that may be the problem. What company made your graphics card?
P.S. if you run out of posts you can feel free to email me at [email protected] for more extensive help if needed .
All my specs are shown in my posts above. I got that list of graphics card information from the widget on the Nvidia site, much like the application you mentioned, when it checked my system.

That script can be funny with XP systems. But it did give enough info to show a possible problem.

Try running the same error logging script http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1383256-advanced-minecraft-error-test/
I see you have XP, but it does work for certain Xp systems, even if it doesn't finish, it may give enough info.

Thanks, Elizabeth
I'd suggest uninstalling all java installs you have. and then installing the latest version from here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
If it still isn't working after that, try running with your AV disabled and see if that changes anything.
