I upgraded Minecraft to 1.4.4. a couple of hours ago, and I decided to play around with the vanilla version before tracking down my favourite mods and installing them.
One of the first things I did was to go up to the "roof garden" of my house at sunset, and check out the surrounding scenery. When I did this, I noticed I was getting torch images flickering on my screen, seemingly at random. The images vary in size, some appear to be very close (5-10 blocks), others further away. The flickering images seem to be much more prevalent in a particular direction, covering about 20-30 degrees of my view, but I am getting them in all directions. This doesn't seem to be a transparency issue, as the images would be in impossible positions (some in mid-air). The images give me the impression that I'm looking at "fireflies", but they are definitely images of the Minecraft torch. Hope you can fix this.
EDIT: Just tried adjusting my video settings to see if it changed anything. The only setting which seems to affect this problem is the "particles" setting. Changing this to "minimal" seems to stop the flickering. Having it on "all" or "decreased" still shows the flickering. Also, the images are 99% in a narrow arc. Flickering outside this arc is very rare.
I am getting the same issues. It is only happening in the North Northwest direction. They actually completely disappear if I turn Particles:Minimal. They are still present if Particles:Decreased and All.
I am also experiencing this. I was using Windows 7 32-bit and had a hard-drive crash. I decided to go ahead and take the plunge with the 64-bit version of Windows and upgrade my RAM from 4 to 8. I installed Minecraft and created a batch file to increase java memory. Loads faster and responds better. Didn't have the torch/firefly issue at all. But, I went in to the video settings and turned on Open GL. Minecraft said that I was running the 32-bit version of Java and would probably do well to upgrade to the 64-bit version of Java (which I didn't know there was one... nor did I know there was a 64-bit version of Firefox called "Nightly"...) Well, after I installed the 64-bit version of Java and changed my Minecraft batch file to load it... BOOM... fireflies everywhere. Doesn't seem to affect gameplay... but, is a bit annoying.

This also removes torch flames. Pretty much confirms it is something to do with torches.
1.4.5 partially fixes it but they are still working on it. This is an issue where you guys should be looking in either the Recent Updates and Snapshots forum or on the Mojira bug reporting site to see if anyone else is experiencing it.

Its very annoying and makes playing not fun
I see no mention anywhere that Mojang even knows about it
It has been reported in both those places:

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
