To those brave souls that parade the forums looking for people to help, thank you. Before you can me however, I must fill you in on key details.
I've been playing Minecraft for over a year now, since Beta 1.1, and I love this game. But ever since I've switched to this computer, minecraft has been crashing. And not just a normal crash, I'm talking all out, computer freeze, non-responsive, ALt-F4 ragetype, emergency re-boot crashing. Also, these crashes are completly random, some days it will never crash, others it will crash in a second, and others it will crash after an hour. Also, after it crashes once, it will crash immediatly upon entering a world until about a day later. And when it does crash, I generally loose all my save data, even though the level file is still in my save folder (but thats normal, right? ).
My computer is from 2002, and is two motherboards behind everyone else, but theres not much that can be done about that (as I like my money). However, I know that it is not my motherboard, nor any other computer-part shortcomings that causes these crashes. The computer I used to play on is also from 2002 and all it's specs are much worse than this computer's, and it runs Minecraft fine.
I've tried evrything to try and stop these crashes. My drivers are up to date, I've scrub my registry squeaky-clean, I've defragmented my hardrive a dozen times, and it's not an out of memory error, as I've deleted everything on my C drive and tried it, and moved Minecraft to my F drive. Also, it isn't RAM, even though mine's abysmal (1.75 GB if you want to know ) because the one I used to play on had something like 1.5 GB.
However, I can completly nullify the crashes with the weirdest methond EVER. I tried it once just to take a picture, but I found the game didn't crash anymore. If I play on a texture pack that is 64x64 pixels or larger, and use the MCPatcher, (but not Optifine), my game will not crash. A 32x32 or a 16x16 will continue to crash. Another odditiy is that 32x32 packs, while they will still crash my computer, do so at a slower rate; 8x8 packs (even though they're still 256 x 256 pixels or something in the .png) will crash much quicker than their 16x16 counterparts.
But, like I said, my computer frankly sucks. With a 64x64 pack, I incur enourmous amounts of lag, and it's getting very annyoing getting constantly killed by zombies because I dropped in framerate and fell in a hole . Plus, downloading new texture packs constantly fills up my registry and memory, takes unnecessary amounts of time, and cause my computer to become susceptible to many virus, just because my computer and virus protection are outdated and suck. Also, I like default Minecraft textures, as they are very nostalgic.
So, if anyone got this far through the post (I know, I tend to ramble ) and knows a way to help (and wants to, fascism is outdated), I would be mightily obliged if you could post possible soulutions in the designated typing space below this essay post. If you need more information, such as computer specs, I will be willing to post it, as it will be helpful and others may have similar issues. As it is cliche at the end of these thingies to offer rewards, I offer 200 to anyone who solves this anomaly, as it is more adabtable than diamonds, used for more things, and is at a higher demand in general in today's market. Thank you and have a nice (insert pertinent sun position for your time zone here).
A lot of people have been reporting crashing in 1.2.4. I don't recall seeing anything related to texture packs, though; the behavior you are reporting with the texture pack sizes is very bizarre. I don't think an 8x8 texture pack would be functionally different to the game from a 16x16, just with less detail (unless MCPatcher has an option for 8x8? I've never used it, so I wouldn't know.)
Have you noticed the crashing at all before 1.2.4?
My minecraft game crashes extremely rarely. So why not just installing Kaspersky, installing your fresh clean minecraft.jar, and you also uninstall your texture packs? And even why not just reformatting your computer? This computer is ancient.
And a note: I have no viruses or malware from my texture pack. Xaiwaker crashes my game, but I like the other packs and default textures most.
Ah, yes, but it is not a virus at all, nor a bad Minecraft jar (I've re-downloaded Minecraft many times) that causes my entire computer to freeze; as if that were the issue, it would crash just the same on high-rez texture packs. Also, as I said, I have an older computer that Minecraft runs perfectly fine on, so I would highly doubt the crashes have anything to do with computer part either, unless one of them is screwed up in some illogical way that only crashes when Minecraft plays. If do somehow need to buy a new part, however, I would just simply buy a new computer.
I guess what I'm asking is if anyone knows what could cause this who is much more computer savvy than me, or if anyone also experiences this problem. Oh, I forgot to say I'm on Windows Xp, which could be helpful...
Try upgrading to 7? That's all I can come up with (except getting a new computer, of course).

We did not invent the Algorithm. The Algorithm consistently finds Jesus. The Algorithm killed Jeeves. The Algorithm is banned in China. The Algorithm is from Jersey. The Algorithm constantly finds Jesus. This is not the Algorithm. This is Close.
Immediatly upon re-entering Minecraft after making this post, Minecraft froze and deleted my world.
Fix your game, Jeb! (Just kidding, it's probably my computer)
I possibley discovered a fix! I hadn't tried it on the default texture after I knew about it. After Minecraft crashed, I had to force shut-down my computer. I got back on, and tried seeing if it was lag spikes that could have caused it to crash ( I tried this many times before, but you never know). Well, all the things I had open stayed ontop of the Minecraft window, for some odd reason. This turned out to be a twist of good fate, because then I put Minecraft to fullscreen (It didn't get rid of the programs, by the way, I shut those down). I played on the default texture pack, and realized after about an hour, that Minecraft hadn't crashed! 100% of the time before this, whenver I started Minecraft after it previously crashed, my computer froze after about a minute. Now, this it just based off an assumption, and it could still possibly crash. I will post after a while whether or not Minecraft has crashed, as I will most likely play often this week (Yay belated Spring Break!) Thanks to all that helped!
Well, since you haven't actually told anybody anything about your pc, other than it's old and has marginal amount of memory, there's really not a lot to go on. Maybe make an informative post clarifying what hardware you have and someone might spot something. Or you could, you know, just go back to playing on the pc that it doesn't crash on.
It does sound like some kind of video driver issue, and you'll forgive me if I don't necessarily believe your assurance that you have the latest driver.

Oh, and when I said I updated my drivers in the OP, I meant that when I did, it continued to crash, and I just didn't update them since then because Minecraft is the only game made past 2005 that I play on this computer, so none of them need more resources than I had at hand at that time, with, of course, the exception of Minecraft which shouldn't need that much, yet, obviosly, it does. I just didn't put that in the first post because I didn't have enough commas. Sorry if I sounded like a whiney child that doens't know where his taskbar is on his computer .
Okay, some food for thought.
I have been experimenting with increasing Minecraft's performance, with Optifine, redownloading Java, changing the memory allocated to it, ect. I got it down to the point where Minecraft was running at about 40 fps, which is about double what I was getting. Now, I've always had these massive spikes of lag every few minutes that appear as solid blocks of white on Minecraft's lag-o-meter thingy. I always figured that because Minecraft lagged so bad anyway, they were just larger forms of the ambient lag I had anyways, because of creatures tracking me, sunset/sunrise, ect. Well, even with the reduced lag, I noticed that these spikes countinued, and would appear inexpleciably, regardless of abient lag; Almost exactly like the crashes... So, It got me wondering if it was possible that these crashes were just lag spikes that my computer could not physically handle. That still doesn't explain why 64x64 texture packs would prevent the crashes, but, who knows; it's java. I've also looked online, and I haven't seen anyone report similar lag spikes, they all experience either the lag spike of death (Improperly named, if you ask me. You wanna see a lag spike of death, come to my computer), or the weird "minecraft runs for 30 minutes then drops to 1 fps" thing.
Anyways, thanks for the help guys/gals! I appreciate it!
The lag spikes, I have found, occcur only at certain places, and will occur every time I enter there. The lag spikes can also range from periods of 2 seconds, to periods of over 30 seconds. Also, the areas in which the spikes occur vary, and once these areas are left, the spike will stop, regardless of how much time it would have normally taken (the times are constant in each area). Finally, it does not appear that these areas are influenced by the y-value. In other words anywhere the lag areas are, from bedrock to cloud level, the spikes will occur (no conclusive evidence of this yet though, will run some tests).
Because of these findings, I can now test to see if it is the spikes that are causing the crash, as I will have an unfluctuating specimen to run experiments on.
So it's related to what chunks you are in.
Could be entities (mobs, plants that grow), water, lava, redstone, lighting... something dynamic.
Have you ever played with the Advanced OpenGL setting? If your driver supports it, it can improve performance.
So, if anyone got this far through the post (I know, I tend to ramble ) and knows a way to help (and wants to, fascism is outdated), I would be mightily obliged if you could post possible soulutions in the designated typing space below this
essaypost. Thank you and have a nice (insert pertinent sun position for your time zone here).Have you noticed the crashing at all before 1.2.4?
And a note: I have no viruses or malware from my texture pack. Xaiwaker crashes my game, but I like the other packs and default textures most.
I guess what I'm asking is if anyone knows what could cause this who is much more computer savvy than me, or if anyone also experiences this problem. Oh, I forgot to say I'm on Windows Xp, which could be helpful...
I doubt it would make a difference I use xp also and I have no problems running minecraft.
BREAKING NEWS!BROKEN HEART!
Can you post the output from a dxdiag please?

In other words, you aren't keeping up with your driver updates, which you should always be doing if you want to play the latest updates on games.
It is demeaning.
Instead, more information!
Could be entities (mobs, plants that grow), water, lava, redstone, lighting... something dynamic.
Have you ever played with the Advanced OpenGL setting? If your driver supports it, it can improve performance.
