Hello, I know there are many posts about people needing help with lag, but I really hope you guys can assist me. Let me explain quickly:
I have never had lag before. I played both prereleases of 1.8 with absolutly no lag. When 1.8 came out, I created a brand new world, found a village, and played non-stop for about 2 days. There was no lag at all. I even remember thinking that it's a good thing I don't even have a tiny delay, because the new combat options are awesome.
Then, 1.8.1 came out and when I play now, the first 5-10 minutes is perfect. I even use Misa's 64 bit texture pack with no problems at all.
After this random amount of time, sometimes accompanying sunset, but not always, a devastating amount of lag pops up. I mean it would be virtually unplayable even in Peaceful. On any other difficulty setting, it's impossible to play. In addition to the lag, when I turn, I can see the terrain reforming. There will be holes in the ground that are refilled as I look at them. This is not just when I move to a new location, but i can stand still and turn my head and the holes reappear every time.
Ok, so that's the problem. This is what I've done to try to fix it:
After a PC restart, it works fine for the 5-10 minutes again.
I read Speed Guide
1)No other programs are open.
2)It's not a laptop.
3)Tried running on fast using Advanced GL
4)Tried with no texture pack.
5)Made the custom launcher.
6)Not using Linux.
7)Disabled Windows indexing services.
8)Updated Java.
9)Can't install Optifine yet until it's updated to 1.8
10)I play on full screen.
11)I set the priority to high.
12)I set windows to high performance
13)I tried Java beta 7.
14)Updated my graphics card.
15)I completely removed Minecraft from my computer and reinstalled it from scratch. (Deleting all worlds and everything in .minecraft)
I just noticed that step for NVIDIA graphics cards and I'll try that when I get home. I THINK I have an NVIDIA card.
Please, if anyone has any ideas, I would be eternally grateful. Thanks very much.

Optifine is back and I got no comment in helping you, but I could by asking a simple question wat brand computer do you have how much bits is it and how much RAM does it have?
Well, If your playing with Misa's and your getting lag 5-10 might not use a texture pack. I run a 32 bit computer. So ifI turn on a HD Texture pack lagg ftw. Turn down your specs a bit. Far make it normal or short. Smooth lighting can also be a problem. Off and on. Just play with it until you don't have any lag.

The type of PC and stats doesn't really matter as it was working perfectly in 1.8. I just checked Optifine, and the 1.8 update is not available yet. They say it's underway.
Thanks for replying though!

I'm sorry, my original post was very long, but I mentioned that I tried running without any texture packs.
I have also tried running it on the fastest settings, including smooth lighting off and on and the render distance on short.
To clarify, when I start a game, new or old world, the first 5-10 minutes is 100% lag free. And I didn't get ANY lag until 1.8.1

Try using render distance tiny for now until optifine is updated. Minecrafts autosaves are what tend to cause the lag spike of doom. On tiny render the auto saves will be smaller and more manageable, but you won't be able to see anything ...

I have tried a render distance of short.
This isn't a render issue. I go from 100% zero lag to lag that makes it unplayable instantly, after playing about 5-10 minutes, regardless of what I'm doing. Even if I just make a new world, and stand still until the lag hits.

I noticed all that too, but what is weird, is not everyone is having this problem.
I just don't understand what it is that it doing it. I've read something about a World update. Also, I've heard that if people put it on peaceful, it goes away.
I just need to narrow down when it happens. It has to be a specific event in the world that causes it, because before that point, I can run Misa's 64 pack with no lag. I can be in melee combat with a creeper, double tap to sprint and hit him while he's sidestepping to knock him away.
After the lag spike hits, I can't even kill a zombie stuck in a pit below me.

Maybe its depending on the used bit version, eather 32, or 64 bit of java and / or the os.
Or the jave version itself. I´m running java 6, 32 bit in the latest version, maybe those people without the problems are running version 7 and / or 64 bit.
Murdoc1980
I have tried this. With Java 7.
I'll try a couple things, like running on peaceful to see if this fixes it. It won't really help, but at least it will help narrow down the problem.

Do you also have lag spike problems until the massive death spike? Mine will spike every 3-5 seconds until a few minutes in, then spike so hard that it will be seconds before the game does anything again. I tried installing the optifine LSOD fix, but it hasn't done anything.

I have the same issue in 1.8.1 I usually get 300+ fps but after a few minutes of normal play I start getting lag spikes that drop me to 0 fps for a second or so. These make the game unplayable as they occur every 20-30 seconds. After persevering for a bit I will get a longer spike that usually results in a 'out of memory' crash.
Running a HD texture pack and patcher, no other mods.

After some searching I followed the directions in the post below (credit to PhantomGamers) and all my crashing/lag related issues are solved.
What I did was uninstall all the versions of Java that were on my system (I had two), then downloaded and setup the latest version of Java as detailed in this post:
I have tried all this. I eventually had to stop playing on my PC. Instead, i play on my laptop which BARELY gets 20 FPS with no texture pack, vs my Desktop which would get about 60 with 64bit Misa's.
I tried with 1.9 as well, every thing I could find after scouring the internet. Everything runs great (although I get the LSOD every 3-5 seconds, of course.) until about 10 minutes in, then 3 FPS on the lowest setting.
I checked, and my memory usage doesn't even go up. Just the FPS. And if I let it sit long enough, I get the Out of Memory Crash, even though the memory usage never goes above 14%-ish.'
