Was it one with a 2+yr warranty? No, probably not.
Was it one with a 1yr warranty? If it's not DOA they won't take it so as long as it is working fine I'd keep it for now.

alright, yeah it's the one year warranty I bought from amazon [it came in the mail two days ago]
won't know if it's DoA or not till tomorrow when my PSU arrives.
just wondering if being a cheap china made HDD is going to effect it enough that it'd be better for me to try and return it.
"Has issues" means its all over the place.
Think "if the quality control guys took the week off". Some drives die immediately after being plugged in, some last around 3 months, some 6. They aren't a very large batch but they are large enough to where you'd need to be cautious.
The average lifespan of these drives is supposedly around 6 months, however, like with all drives, we honestly have no idea how many people are using them fine and didn't write reviews on them.
That is kind of the thing.
Say 100 people buy the drives.
20-30% is generally the average HDD failure rate across all brands so say 20 are DOA, 10 have problems, and the rest are fine. That's 30 drives that will be returned, 70 that work fine.
Out of the 30 bad drives, 25 people review the drive and give it 1-2 stars.
Out of the 70 good drives, only 30 people review the drive and give it 4-5 stars.
That means, even though 2/3 of the drives were good, because out of the 55 reviews, 25 were bad ones which is almost half, this drags the drive's rating down to ~2.5 stars, even though majority of the ones work fine and had everyone reviewed the drives, the drive would be at 4 stars or so.
This is of course like that for everything but the thing is that for HDDs it is more prevalent since people buy SO MANY of them, even with reviews, your guess as to the quality of the drives is generally up in the air.
