I just wanted to show this off since I was messing around with farm designs for the future 1.8 update. This was made with SPC but I plan on remaking it legitimately in said update.
First Floor
Wheat. Goes around the inside of the structure.
Second Floor
(Optional) Cactus farm, prevents spiders from climbing over.
You could try making the farm with a overhang instead, and moving the cacti in a basement, where there is an auto cacti farm.

I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades
Unknown to death, Nor known to life
Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything
So as I pray, Unlimited Blade Works
The spot for your melons/pumpkins won't work because old maps will be incompatible with 1.8.
You'll still be able to play them, they just wont have the new items or mobs.
Does your brain not function or something? Melons will spawn in new chunks and mechanisms such as plant-growing or mobs or anything don't matter what chunk your in. Your world can be from Alpha and have Enderman spawn. Why would plants be any different >.>

No dude, you won't be able to use pre 1.8 maps for 1.8, so says Mojang. They just won't work. It's like what happened to the beginning of Alpha.

Notch has confirmed that pre-1.8 maps will not have any 1.8 features.

Hey, that's a very nice fail you have there.
Learn to read. If you've been paying attention, you would know that Mojang confirmed any and all maps existing now will not feature any of the 1.8 updates. You can still play them on 1.8, but they'll behave like a 1.7 map.

*facepalm* 1.7 maps will have all the new items and terrain generation and such, just only in chunks you haven't explored. And you can bring melons back to 1.7 chunks, and they will grow fine.
On topic: That's a awesome farm design! It would be cool if you added sugarcane and mushroom farms, too :smile.gif:
There's one link. I'm not going to do the work for you though, so you'll have to search more if you want more.
My world is gonna be lost in 1.8!11!
Incorrect! With Notch's clarification, ALL features of 1.8 can exist, in newly generated chunks in old worlds. Understand though... the terrain changes may cause new chunks to generate in RADICALLY different ways then your current generated land. A flat plains beside new chunks may run into a 128 tall wall of stone from a mountain biome, making for a hideous sight. But everything from 1.8, should work in prior maps... for now.
Trying reading the 1.8 forum a little bit.
To the topic of the farm, it's an interesting design.

This will be for the melons/pumpkins.
Any suggestions, comments?
Thanks

Ya, that seems more appealing then having cactus towers looming over you.
I know, I'm just planning it out now cause I'm bored, ha. It will all be remade in 1.8.
Oh I see. I felt like an ass for saying it, but now it's not so bad lol

can both of you give reference links?

"Notch confirmed at PAX Prime 2011 that maps built in Minecraft beta 1.7 or earlier will not receive any of the new features such as new items, random villiages or NPCs."
