Thanks Alex! That's exactly how I feel. :biggrin.gif:
Here's a little something to stoke your excitment. A couple of screenshots that I took in one of my worlds. A Night & Day shot of the same scene from a "little" ways up in the sky. I used the /fly command in SPC (Single Player Commands) to get there.
Oh, did I mention? SPC seems so far to work fine with Cubic Worlds! :biggrin.gif: The wand doesn't work outside of 0-128 yet, but WorldEdit may eventually become compatible. :wink.gif:
They use traditional means to make Minecraft continue to fully generate terrain around you but to much greater distances than even [FAR] will. The idea is fantastic! But unfortunately there is quite a hit on the fps (Not cferril1's fault). If you stay at low heights the fps drop will be fine for people with already very high fps, but using SPC /fly and Cubic Chunks I discovered that the fps drops dramatically the higher you go, which makes sense as you have a larger growing radius of terrain to generate because of your better line of site.
To give you an idea of the hit; My old computer used to get maybe 15-20 fps on vanilla with [FAST] & [Normal or less] settings. :sad.gif: With CC I can get up to 33 fps with [FAST] & [FAR].
With Triple View & CC at the same time my sea-level fps is 10-13. When looking down @ y=258 it drops to 3-4 fps (without T.V. it's 33fps), @ y=512 it drops to 2 fps and @ y=1024 it drops to 1 fps with terrain generating.
This is due to the fact that the game is FULLY generating/loading every bit of exponentially more chunks even though at those distances you can't really see things at that level of detail anyway. Thankfully Robinton is excited about implementing the idea of compressed pre-built surface terrain that can be loaded very quickly for a very long ways out, creating an actual horizon quickly and with little cpu effort! I tend to agree with him as I had thought of the same thing myself but couldn't implement it yet. :wink.gif: The dramatic effect that this feature will have on our Minecraft experience, at ANY height even 128, cannot be exaggerated.
Until that feature is ready though; The current view extenders are a great way to make even more epic screen shots of your Worlds and accomplishments! Even simulating satellite views if you wish. :wink.gif: Just know that currently y=512 is close to as high as you can resolve traditional low terrain detail even with the TripleView mod due to the cloud/fog layer at y=128 quickly becoming solid white soon after going above 512.
** Ironically, the [F2] Screenshot method wouldn't work for me with TripleView & CC. Well, sometimes it would act like it worked but every single picture it saved was solid black. So I used the traditional screenshot method on Windows of pressing the [prt scr] button on the keyboard then pasting my whole computer screen into "Paint" and cropping out just the minecraft screen. As always, it works. :wink.gif:
Here are a couple shots I took with TripleView ON. One night shot at y=258 with part of my lit up island in the distance and a y=512 shot during the day looking down and West through the cloud layer. I had a 258 day-shot as well but I accidentally saved over it. :tongue.gif:
I fully expect that with Cubic Chunks we will soon be able to have a much better view at this height than even now. These are early days still. :wink.gif:
Hi Bob! Thanks for asking. I didn't know so I wiped my minecraft.jar and did a couple of basic quick tests.
Good News! Both the [ Core ] & [ Full ] Yogbox 1.7.3 beta 6 Install + Cubic Chunks 1.28 (Installed in that order) Worked!! :biggrin.gif:
Now by "Worked" this is what I mean: First, I found that Yogbox already installs Modloader so I didn't have to install it again.
1st test: I installed the CORE version of the above Yogbox (Did not select any mods from the list). I then copied over the Cubic Chunks mod classes & folder into the minecraft.jar and closed it.
2nd test: Uninstalled Yogbox core, then Installed Yogbox again but this time (selected ALL mods in the list). I then copied over the Cubic Chunks mod classes & folder into the minecraft.jar and closed it.
Both had the same good results.
1. I was able to successfully run Minecraft. 2. The Yogbox logos were in the launcher screen. 3. It loaded and ran my Cubic World. 4. Once in the Cubic World I WAS able to stack blocks under me until I was over y=128. This means Cubic Chunks was working!
That was ALL I tested. I did not test any of the features of any of the mods included as I am not yet familiar with it. But at least it runs and lets you go where no Steve has ever gone before.. :wink.gif:
* When I installed the FULL Yogbox my forest looked like it was in Autumn as the grass and leaves were brown/red. I assume this was supposed to happen? Also, everytime I opened a world in either version Steve spun in circles uncontrollably for a couple seconds then stopped. Also; the first time entering a world right after installing either version, I had only 5 hearts. I don't know why.
My minecraft froze on world creation the few times I tried to generate a fresh world but loaded a non converted, saved world just fine.
Great! :smile.gif: I'll tell Robinton about the world creation problem. If bringing in an old world please remember that you will have the smoothest experience if you pre-convert it with the World Save file Converter first.
Enjoy!
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
- The Cubic Chunks Mod is back! Be a part of it's rebirth and Development.
-- Robinton's Mods: [ Mirror ] for some of his Mods incl Cubic Chunks Mod, due to DropBox broken links.
I've also included a drop-down for a Visual Chart comparison of the coordinates that each World Format supports; This is so that people will better understand what will happen to the layers of their world when they convert between different formats.
There is also, in that section, now a download for the New RegionFile Source Code that Robinton & Nocte collaborated on which will soon be rolled into the Cubic Chunks Mod and the Converter. This new code should make Cubic World Saves up to possibly 70% Smaller!! :biggrin.gif:
ROFL! Per a request from Intense_Death, Robinton made a patch for Cubic Chunks Mod v1.28 & the test version of 1.30 [Use v1.31 or higher] that Reduces gravity to almost nothing when you go above y=250 ! Check it out! Here it is:
You could build a Moonscape above y=250 and film some Fantastic Minecraft Moon Videos for Youtube!! :biggrin.gif:
* If you do, please mention/link Cubic Chunks Mod, and perhaps this thread. :wink.gif: Thanks! :smile.gif:
I would LOVE to see those videos! If you do it please PM me the links and I will add them here, thanks!
[EDIT] Sorry everyone! This "spacemod" for CC might only work for the test version of CC 1.30 . It was thought that it would work for 1.28 but I can't seem to get it to work with it... Don't worry though, I'm sure a working version will become available for us all. :wink.gif:
[EDIT#2] CC v1.31WORKSwith this SpaceMod Patch! Go to the CC Downloads and DL it now! Also; The CC SpaceMod patch has been posted for download in the Extras! section of the CC Downloads. :biggrin.gif:
The biggest triumph for this release isn't the inevitable bug-fixes that it added, but the Huge change in the World Save File Format for the Cubic Chunks mod!
- It may have concerned you that the CC World folders were almost 10x the size of Vanilla ones. Well, NO MORE! Through a Collaborative effort on the part of Robinton & Nocte, the Cubic Chunks Mod World Save Files/folder is now pretty much the same size as the Vanilla version! That is despite having added special height maps & other requirements for the 3D Chunks format. This will make a HUGE difference for people hosting Worlds on SMP servers! - The 1.31 Converter can change your old CC Worlds into the New Small format with NO losses.
This is an example of what collaboration of like-minded people can accomplish. :smile.gif: And yes, I don't mind saying that I'm glad I brought them together. :wink.gif:
* I highly recommend upgrading to v 1.31 of both the Mod and it's converter. I also recommend using the converter to upgrade your world all at once, even though the live-autoconverter in the mod has gotten better and no longer seems to have lighting issues.
2. This is actually a Fun one for me! The "CC Space Mod-patch" I talked about in my last post, well, it WORKS with v1.31 ! Just add this patch, made by Robinton, after installing the main CC Mod. Then when you reach y=250 in your world the Gravity will be Greatly reduced! It will still exist but when you jump you will go far higher and fall back slowly with no damage, heh heh. Seriously, what I said in the last post about Moon Walk videos? Please get crack'in. :wink.gif:
* Regarding HDTextures; I have updated the OP with this. I've done some tests with getting HDTextures working with the Cubic Chunks Mod and determined that in addition to needing to start with a vanilla "minecraft.jar" file and then running the MCPatcher program and using it to install every mod involved, you need to make sure that MCPatcher installs the HDFonts & HDTextures LAST. Or at least after the Cubic Chunks Mod. I have all my other test mods installed before CC so I can't say for certain if the HD needs to be last or just after CC, but be warned. :wink.gif: - You may still need to create a .bat file to increase the Java memory limits if you want to use 128x or higher Textures. I might add a tutorial for that to the OP at some point, but there are some already in this forum if you need one. :smile.gif:
Oh, and btw; Robinton says that he has made good progress on the SMP version of CC! :biggrin.gif:
I have added the following Example Instructions to the Cubic Chunks Installation section of the OP regarding how to Install a couple of other mods in addition to the Cubic Chunks mod AND the HD patcher so that you will be able to use HD Textures in all of your worlds.
Example Install of Modloader / TMI / SPC / Cubic Chunks / HDFonts / HDTextures : Click Below
This is an example of how an Install including the following Mods would need to be done if you also want HDTextures to work with them. - But Remember, even after doing this you will likely still need to make Java use more RAM if you want to use 128x or higher Texture Packs:
Run the MCPatcher program per it's instructions then use the [ + ] button to add all of those mods to it's list, then use the arrow buttons to move the names in the list until they are in the following order in the mcpatcher window; HDTextures, in my experience, needs to be Last on the list, or at least after the Cubic Chunks Mod :
Make sure that there is a check-mark next to all of those and ONLY those in that list. When you hit install it will say that there is a conflict between Modloader and Cubic Chunks, that is ok (so long as Cubic Chunks is installed AFTER modloader like in that list).
Now when you go into your Cubic World (Back-up your Vanilla Minecraft world and ".minecraft" folder before doing any of this) you should be able to press the [ T ] key then type "/fly" without the quotes, then look up and push [ W ] and you will be flying to new heights in no time! :wink.gif: And just follow the exact same instructions in order to toggle the flying off again.
* If you want to change the mods added, remove or add something, just run mcpatcher again and change the list accordingly. It will completely redo the patching so make sure to keep the check marks next to everything to want to still have installed.
** The wand in SPC may not work outside of 0-128, or anywhere perhaps, yet until WorldEdit becomes Cubic Chunks compatible.
I have also added the following to the Cubic Chunks Terrain Generator section of the OP:
* kinnikinnick has been tinkering with the Cubic Chunks & PTM Terrain Generation source code posted above and, with help from Nocte & Robinton, has recently had some Wild results and successfully generated some incredible Large terrain features! Click below for a couple examples! :biggrin.gif: *** This Terrain Generation is NOT YET available. There is much testing and work to do yet. :wink.gif:
* There is an unrelated Mod being developed that I would like to mention too because I really like it and have wanted it for a long time. It's the Cart Mod. It has just recently found a modder, jordanske, who has already finished a good part of it!
He has posted a pre-alpha test download and crafting instructions so that people can test it out and hopefully help him with the couple of cart following issues he still has with it. Check it out! :smile.gif:
Here are a couple pictures of early versions of the carts: [ Click below to open ]
I'm really digging this thread, but i have a question for you. I'm currently working with some friends in a hogwarts minecraft model project () and to make it look good we needed the world to be higher. Though i know SMP support isn't yet available i was wondering if it would be possible to buid the parts of the castle that would be taller than 128 in SSP and then use that world in multiplayer. Would it work? And if it did, would it cause trouble building/being arround those tall heights?
I hope this keeps getting better and better and this guy -> gets some inspiration from this mod.
Thanks!
Yes, that should work fine. Just do it on a copy of the world and not the original, and don't use that copy on SMP until SMP Cubic Chunks is ready. Also, I recommend using the World converter v1.31 (or later) to pre-convert the world from Vanilla to the newest Cubic Chunks format before opening the copy of the map. This should give you the smoothest performance and smallest size. Remember though, even SSP can still have some bugs at this point, so keep an eye out on the levels right near the y = 128 boundary and report to Robinton if you find any blocks changing that shouldn't.
You can keep a normal copy of the minecraft.jar file, labeled as 173_minecraft.jar, and a separate 173_CC131_minecraft.jar in your bin folder and just copy the one you need at any time and cut off the front off of the name after deleting the prior minecraft.jar. * DO NOT access a Vanilla world with Cubic Chunks installed unless you want it to become a Cubic World! If you do it by accident then you might be able to fix it by using the Converter to convert it from Cubic to Vanilla. But back it up first even then.
I'm trying to get Robinton to add yet another feature to the Converter; this would allow copying striped sections of worlds between defined y heights into other World Save files. This would allow you, for instance, to paste everything from y = 129 to 2048 from the world you are now working on onto a later converted copy of that world. But I cannot guarantee that will happen or when it would.
Your project sounds like fun! Let us know how it works out. I would love to have a couple screenshots once you have built your extra-tall structures! :smile.gif:
nadine has updated her ModernCraft City world save to v7 and converted it to the new smaller Cubic Chunks 1.31 save file format! Many buildings and details have been added, check it out!
Oh yeah, she's also added a 64x version of her already included 128x Texture Pack. :smile.gif:
* You can still go into this world if you are using an older Cubic Chunks version than 1.31, but you would need to use the v1.31 Converter to convert her v7 world into the "Old CC" format which will take up WAY more space. I personally recommend just updating to the newest Cubic Mod, it's a worthwhile update. :smile.gif:
Some problems were found in the Cubic Chunks generation of new Nether chunks. Robinton has put out a quick fix that seems to take care of the problems, it also gives the Nether greater height & depth like the above world (in the form of netherrack). :wink.gif: - Terrain details like this may change further as development continues.
The link to the v1.31 Nether Fix has been added to the Cubic Chunks mod Downloads in the OP.
It's OUT! The SMP Multi-player version of the Cubic Chunks Mod has been posted to the CC Downloads section of this thread's OP. :biggrin.gif:
But be WARNED! This is the very first and Experimental release of the Client & Server versions of this Mod. There WILL be bugs!! Back up everything and install it only if you are willing to play with the X-Version and help bug-test. :wink.gif:

Oh, and btw: Robinton, the author of the Cubic Chunks Mod, has mentioned that he may soon bump up the Vertical space of the Cubic Chunks Mod from 4096 to 65536 blocks! :biggrin.gif:
All I can say to that is:
Do not attempt to adjust your Display;
Robinton is in Control of the Vertical.
You are about to experience... the Outer Limits!

Oh god please please please please please release that terrain generation engine/mod/method/patch for the love of god please!
It's the one thing I've always felt MC lacked. Huge sprawling mountains and canyons and really big terrain features!
Oh god please please please please please release that terrain generation engine/mod/method/patch for the love of god please!
It's the one thing I've always felt MC lacked. Huge sprawling mountains and canyons and really big terrain features!
Me too! And since the breakthrough they've had it's only a matter of time now before we will all have that available to us. :smile.gif:
Just remember that even after the first releases which will include some of this, there will be more terrain options and features added and expanded on afterwards.
The goal is to give people the options needed to have the kind and style of terrain they want to have. Which is part of why the terrain generation code has been open for all to play with and help with.
I have verified with Robinton that he is open to the idea of having more than one Terrain generator in or usable with the Cubic Chunks Mod. There are different algorithms that can be used for terrain generation, each of which can affect the "style" of terrain in many subtle or distinct ways.
There is so much to look forwards too! And soon. :wink.gif:

Modloader
Too Many Items
Single Player Commands
Cubic Chunks 1.31
HDFonts
HDTextures

:smile.gif:

:smile.gif:

Oh yeah, she's also added a 64x version of her already included 128x Texture Pack. :smile.gif:
* You can still go into this world if you are using an older Cubic Chunks version than 1.31, but you would need to use the v1.31 Converter to convert her v7 world into the "Old CC" format which will take up WAY more space. I personally recommend just updating to the newest Cubic Mod, it's a worthwhile update. :smile.gif:

Oh, and btw: Robinton, the author of the Cubic Chunks Mod, has mentioned that he may soon bump up the Vertical space of the Cubic Chunks Mod from 4096 to 65536 blocks! :biggrin.gif:
All I can say to that is:
Do not attempt to adjust your Display;

And soon. :wink.gif:
