So how does this look? I've only done this side of the building for now.
-snip-
Well... The mushrooms are certainly interesting (I haven't figured out how to get different orientations with data tags yet). I think the structure is a bit too... angular? If you take away the mushrooms, I think it would look like some stone brick boxes stacked on top of each other, no offense.
Aesthetics Community question: How do you make small structures? By small structures, the ones that were in Piglet Village in UT2 and pretty much every town/city based area are the kind of structures I'm mostly referring to.
When I make structures... well... I make them, blow them up, build more, blow them up, and repeat until it looks nice. :/
Unless you know what you're doing, I'd tend to agree. But if you use McEdit to do the big things, like hollowing out a complex cavern with a comprehensive overview, then subsequently touch up the broad strokes of McEdit using other tools (e.g. WE, VS) which are better suited to small groundwork, then you're a good mapmaker in my eyes.
So yeah... I don't agree. MCEdit (is it mcEdit,Mcedit, MCEdit or McEdit?) seems to me like the most basic, hard-to use program, but, it gives you way more control. Worldedit allows you to immediately see what you're doing, yes. But copying in worldedit is a pain. I don't see how WE gives a better edge in smaller areas. MCEdit can do great as well. It's just a matter of how you use it. I'm doing about 90% in MCEdit, then adding final touches in vanilla. That turns out all right so far. I'm still learning a lot, and the map I'm working on is actually going to be playable, yet still a "practice area". VS never worked for me, but I feel MCEdit is underrated. It can do a lot more, since it got all functions, and you can even add functions easily by filters..
This area is made 90% MCedit, 10%14w11b. Thanks for the feedbacks btw:
I really don't see how worldedit would have made it better... I can improve, but the tools?

The advantage of worldedit isn't how it's got more tools, it's that it's in game. I get feedback RIGHT AWAY, instead of looking at a bunch of magenta things that are cube-like, then opening it up in MC.

Oh, yeah, I'm using the beta build. Less lag, no magenta things. It's up to date, and very stable. I'd suggest you try it
MCEdit gives even more feedback, since it allows me to see spawners and stuff through walls easily. Whatever. I'll stop here. Do what you prefer I'd say?

This is the biggest "advantage", I think, of WorldEdit over MCedit. This as well as the flexibility and the comfort of Minecraft's controls as opposed to MCedit's controls (which can take a while to get used to )
I think MCedit and WorldEdit are comparable to computer programming. MCedit is a very well designed programming interface, but it still requires you to know how to code. WorldEdit, on the other hand, is like fairly capable, yet constrained drag-and-drop programming interface.
For me, it works to use MCedit for the base structures, then to use VoxelSniper for more intricate details in the terrain, then to use WorldEdit for structures and other misc. touch-ups.
Since I haven't really been active on this thread before, here's some derpy screenshots of my work on small PvP maps in the past on which I've used this strategy:

As Rubisk said, just do whatever works best for you
Wow. MCedit is relegated to the world of pasting fancy-spawners and honeypotting for me...it's really strange to think of using it for anything aesthetic....strange stuff.

The difference between MCEdit and WorldEdit/VoxelSniper is the difference between a Paint Roller and a Paint Brush. MCEdit excels when it comes to creating large terrains and primitive shaped structures (Square, Circle, Triangle) but lacks the ability to do a lot of the finer details. WorldEdit/Voxel Sniper excel at getting more into the finer details of things. The main difference that I see, at least in my option, is that you can much more easily create larger structures and terrain with WorldEdit/VoxelSniper than you can create that finer detail with MCEdit.
The reason I prefer to use WorldEdit and VoxelSniper is because it feels more like an art, like you're sculpting a creation. You start out with a blob of something and slowly shave it down and smooth it out, create the shape that you want one step at a time. It also has the added benefit of you knowing exactly what something will look like immediately, with MCEdit you need to tab back and forth between two separate programs in order to get the true feel of how what you made looks.
Now I'm not saying either way is better than the other, it's more of a preference things.
So how does this look? I've only done this side of the building for now.
Honestly, it looks like 3 boxes, with a pyramid on top, with three colored blobs on the side. Not digging it, and honestly I'd start from scratch on a newer version.
To give you an idea of how bad it is, the card is the second-lowest end card (just above the GeForce 205) that Nvidia released 5 years old.
A good metric that doesn't necessarily represent gaming FPS ouput, but puts in perspective is that your card has 16 CUDA cores, versus a mid-range card right now (GTX 760) has 1152.
So yeah, pretty bad. Oh well, there's probably not too much you can do about it right now, but at least you can play Minecraft
The thing on top is a Lava-Core thingy stuff
I should stop building towers...But I'm getting better!
How's the stream Fang?
Don't stop its amazing
Also can i just say (off topic for minute) that this is the best song evar? I mean it was already great, but this acoustic version makes it even more amazing!
Keep in mind its an actual song, not just music, but still amazing.

@Community question
I think as long as they aren't too grand they're good. Giant pre-built /luxurious pre-built bases are one of the main things that take the survival aspect out of a map.
Community Question! (everyone is allowed to do these...right?) What do you guys think of Pre Built Bases? Like this
Yeah sure man. You can do those...
For me, I don't like prebuilt bases. I think that each survival thing you do, should be rewarding. If you have ever heared about pacing, in CTM maps, basebuilding is what is usually the story/scenery part in other games. By making a prebuilt base, the map first feels very stressfull, and also doesn't reward survival. I agree half-finished stuff is fine, but I think building a base and farms should basically make the map easier over time. Not do nothing.

If you use it well, it can look fine....and I'm going to guess he actually used worldedit.
My mini-CTM map! It's a fun map, so play it!

Maybe try red sand instead of sandstone/sand?

Hmmm.... No, I don't see anything wrong here. Not at all.
Oh yeah, except for Why does this exist? Who thought this was a good idea? Did anyone actually believe this would do anything?

I really love this! I especially like that you took my advice with the sandstone. :3

Special thanks to Axl Rosie for the sig.

Btw, the new mipmap lvls. I usually don't like them. Am I the only one?
Roblox has been dead for few years now, only full of 8 year olds. :|
