To put it simply, this map is amazing. I wonder how a multiplayer version of this map using SDK's Guns & Utilities with the planes mod would work out, Minecraft WWIII?
Where do you even spawn in SMP? I'm completely lost.
I'm not sure. That version is intended to be used on a server that can set a spawn point. The SSP version allows you to change your spawn to a selection of cities.
You didn't post signs for all the cities did you? I think I'm at St. Louis where I live but I'm not seeing a sign for it. I assume you only did coastal cities. Still, though, freaking awesome.
No, not all cities. I don't think St. Louis got a sign; maybe Chicago did?
Now how feasible do you think it would be to have a 1m:1block scale of the earth, complete with appropriate or "closest" biomes?
It's possible but due to the time it would take we aren't going to do it. Also the maps we use as data have a resolution of 21600x10800; if we made the map bigger it would look strange up close due to us not having accurate data.
but can you make separte downloads? i want a 1m = 1block map off norway! :wink.gif:
the current world is 10800 * 21600 blocks = 233280000 blocks2
norway is 323,802 km2. one kilometer = 1k blocks, so 323802 * 1000 = 323802000 blocks2
so norway as an example is a little bit bigger than this map, you can do this with alot of countries in separate world downloads! it's a bit weird to say blocks 2. but it's the same as m2 :wink.gif:
(and i don't even need all of norway, just the bottom half)
If you read the entire post you see that this map is already running on Bukkit.

Have a nice day.
Apparently a few people have had problems with mods and what not using this map on servers so I will officially say: Everyone can use this map for whatever their heart desires. It was created for people to play on, and that's what I want people to do.

We don't have data with that much detail so it is not possible to make countries that size.
How could I not have seen this before! Okay, first, no words can describe my amazement. I just stared for a minute looking at it. Epic is overused these days, and yet in it's proper form it still doesn't describe this. I cannot wait to play. I might download a mapping program to move my current map into it, maybe in the middle of the Atlantic or even beyond the edges of the map or something. I thought it was big, and it's only around 3 sq km.
Second, recommendations. While I like the idea of ancient versions of earth, and I think that would be way cool, I don't think it should be the first priority. As soon as I saw the cartograph, I had an idea. I read the whole topic before posting this to see if anyone else had it, and no one had apparently, except for one dude who couldn't think big enough. THIS is my idea:
I don't know what rendering method you use, but hopefully with these (and other Google Image examples), the height maps and whatnot, you can do a terraformed Mars as well. Maybe a little less snow, little more desert. I don't know but if NASA examples for Earth exist they should for Mars right? But seriously, please please please I'd f'in donate $$$ to get you working on it. I can wait months too. Years I might get annoyed at but I am patient. If I can get that, a nice detailed fully upgraded version, I will be set with Minecraft for life I think. If you or anyone else won't do it I'll build it myself by hand, it's the only project in my mind now. I'm already thinking of going and planting little flags where all the landers have touched down...
Titan, Mercury, the Moon or especially Venus would be interesting too. Quick Googling can find all their forms, natural and hypothesized terraformed versions. All are smaller than earth and so could be done in more detail.
And last but not least, I await the day, 20 years from now, when Minecraft is as retro as Super Mario Bros is now. Why? Because then rendering a 1/1 version of the Earth will actually be a feasible, relatively easy idea. At least in terms of computing power.

Everything I build is 100% legit. No mods, no tools, nothing but time and effort.
It should work on any computer.
No it will not.

You will need to post on the server thread.

Nope probably not.
That site had to get taken down due to a few security risks a couple weeks back. Right before it got taken down we had 2GB/min of bandwidth.
It probably snowed. The Minecraft weather doesn't know we overwrote the world. There must have been a snow biome there originally.

Probably the Sahara, I'm not sure where the default spawn is.
