I frequently end up finding myself branch mining through hundreds of blocks of stone and dirt just to try to find a vein. The entire purpose (in my mind) of ore veins is to discourage branch mining and instead encourage setting up actual mining infrastructure in specific areas. Having to branch mine (while fine for some people) to find the thing that's supposed to discourage branch mining just seems weird to me.
Major - I ran out of tea while programming and now I'm sad Q.Q
First, the point of something like COG is that you don't branch mine -- you explore caves and ravines. You want to look around widely, and use naturally occurring surface openings to look inside the ground.
Iron can be found from surface ravines, without ever going into caves. Yes, you'll find it in fewer blocks if you do go into caves, but the caves might be dangerous.
Second:
I used to be a tea drinker as well. Then, I found coffee. Good coffee. Stay away from Robusta beans, use Arabica. There's major differences in how different companies roast their beans, and it does make a difference in taste. Try some different ones, see what tastes good.
(Meanwhile, time to look at those videos. Text in the OP doesn't give a good enough description.)
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?

(Meanwhile, time to look at those videos. Text in the OP doesn't give a good enough description.)
At this point the videos are outdated honestly and I really need to remake them, I've already added a good deal of features (especially to the Layout Blocks). I'm just a little hesitant to remake them because I have a bunch more plans of stuff to include in the coming few weeks - and I don't want to have to remake the videos 10 times. In terms of the text any suggestion on how I could improve it? I was trying to be descriptive and give enough how-to info without being too long winded (since I know a good deal of people hate having to read a lot).
I do realize something like COG is so you don't branch mine, but I was finding on the default settings (of frequency and vein size) that it was still just far more efficient to branch mine to find veins than to try to adventure and/or cave to do so, I decided to radically lower the frequency (15%) and up the size a touch (120%). I liked how that played out a lot more because branch mining was not really feasible anymore. The issue I was having after that though was just it was too easy to get unlucky and not have any coal/iron/early-game-resources anywhere remotely near you at all (thousands of blocks). I found that making those prospectors was a good way (that me and some of my friends enjoy using) to be able to have super rare (and slightly more rich than normal) ore veins without pulling our hair out cause of having no real alternative than to branch just run around until we got lucky. They just add a way to search more methodically without it being as much of a time sink.
It's totally personal preference and people should play how they want, that's what config files are for anyway.
Edit: Oh and I prefer tea because I find coffee has too much caffeine and it generally keeps me up at night when I have any D: I do love the taste though

^ So I was working on a lil modpack for our server focused on adventure with some building based mods like chisel tossed in to go with the quest mod goal for building a house of netherstar blocks that gent above me made... aaaaaaaand then he showed me this fantastic, and amazing mod. Like I literally gasped squealed and fanboyed instantly, and i'm sure he could copy paste my reactions here if he really wanted to. Thissssss is single handedly the beeeest tool for building and this has officially become a must have... I will throw hissy fits without this. Thank you sooo soo soo soo soo sooooooooo much for this mod!
v0.3.0 is up! Same link as before, find it in the OP.
Here's a quick look at some of the big changes, see the OP for a complete changelog:
Layout Blocks are now crafted from 2 sticks beside 1 coloured powder Just some basic re-balancing. This mod is pre v1.0 anyway
Coloured Powders now cost clay instead of gunpowder, and craft 2 at a time I wanted to make sure Coloured Powder is accessible to players in Peaceful mode. I figured clay is a good replacement for gunpowder, the other option is flint. I'll see how this change plays out!
Config file now version independent Meaning from this point on you won't have to re-configure stuff you've already customized. One downside is that since Coloured Powder is now considered a Block instead of an Item you may get some ID problems if you try to load a world that had v0.2.2 or earlier running. You can fix those by messing around in the config or by letting it delete your previous Coloured Powder. This will be the last major id-altering change, I apologize for it but it was required for the future of the mod!
Condensed Coloured Powder blocks are now craftable from 9 Coloured Powder and vice-versa also works Standard accepted "storage" block for freeing up space. There's some special stuff about these blocks though - see the OP for details on them!
Coloured Powder can now be placed as a light source It's twinkly, too!

Wow, thanks for the super awesome feedback! I really appreciate it a lot People seem to be enjoying the Layout Blocks a lot more than I originally guessed they would, that makes me happeh <3

Of course, these blocks are brilliant. They solve so many challenges in building large scale, and make building with mods much better, So much time can be spent picking out block combos when you have a larger array for blocks. And putting them together larger scale can be a hassle, so the ability to do it quick and dirty is really nice. So many mods tend to forget the building portion of the game, and having another staple for building is simply amazing. And seeing what you're planning and doing with these blocks alone is gives me high hopes. It's one block, but it's versatile nature, make it extremely useful.
It's a block that knows what it's for, and will stretch itself to fit all those annoying and pesky challenges when it comes to building large scale. But it manages to do it in a way that's just absolutely fantastic. It feels like a block that's come from hours of play rather than an idea on a piece of paper that goes off of X popular mod. I'm for sure going to keep my eyes on this mod for sure.
Edit: However I would maybe like to request a config for the sparklies on the layout blocks for turning them on or off. Would be greatly appreciated!
Hm I've been thinking about what I want to add next and I have about 5-10 ideas for things going into the future... I'm going to post three of them here. Let me know which of these three you'd like to see implemented first (they all will be eventually):
Layout Block "Paint brush" - Used to quickly place various pre-made shapes in various sizes. This would allow you to instantly place circles, ovals, triangles, hexagons, etc. (in both 2d and 3d forms) of Layout Blocks. You can then manipulate the shapes like you would manipulate any other Layout Block structure.
Layout Block "Air brush" - Used to shoot out Layout Blocks in a controlled but randomized conic area (imagine what sand looks like when you launch a ton of it with TnT) in order to randomly scatter them over surfaces (vertical or horizontal). This would really help with creating randomized patterns for things like foliage.
Layout Block "Editor brush" - This tool will allow you to move, copy, (potentially) re-size, rotate, etc. existing structures of Layout Blocks. Wanna make a replica of this? Go ahead and make one pillar out of Layout Blocks and then copy the structure around.
The above of course all assume you have enough of the appropriate Layout Block in your inventory - it wouldn't be balanced if it was magically free.

Of those, how about paint brush first. The copy existing can be done with Schematica right now (it's a little different from layout blocks), but I don't know of anything that gives nice shapes.
And, large domes, for something like a butterfly-filled tree-farm? Very much worth it.
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
A lot of torches are getting replaced. Nice additions, you can never have too many lighting alternatives.
Was wondering if it is possible to be able to add blocks by right clicking on the top of the block rather than the side? As of now I still have to slide to the side of the block without falling off to add the blocks.
The paint brush it shall be then! Thanks for the imput
In terms of adding more blocks by right clicking the top, I'm assuming you mean you'd like to be able to right-click any face and instead of the current behaviour, it would build in whatever direction you're facing? I can look into doing something like that for sure, I'd just be worried about it not being intuitive to many people. I shall give it a try though!
Also for the new recipes, how are they in terms of cost per unit? I'm good at making things do what I want, not so much making things balanced

The way it works now is great. I was more thinking of how to more easily add blocks while standing on top of the block. If each face were broken into quadrants kinda like this-
right clicking in the quadrant would add the block in that direction. This would add a few advantages like pillar up then climb, or being able to add blocks directly below you. Again just thinking out loud.
I think the recipes are better now with the clay. We were trying to think of a good way of farming creepers before lol.

Okay, that's different than I thought you meant but I can see where that could actually work nicely. I'll try implementing it and if it's liked then I'll add in some wireframe outlines to make it more clear to the player what's going on. I think the only thing nice to add would be a small square in the center that you could target ito replicate the current behaviour. Thanks for the idea!

I don't generally like double posting... but I just had to post this! Charlotte's Utilities is now officially part of the Yogscast Complete and Resonant Rise mod packs!
I'm a touch excited about this, also the fact that it's my birthday helps with that excitement. I figured I should share the joy!
Diamonds (or cookies, whichever you prefer - I like the latter) to everyone that's helped out and shown interest in the mod so far. You can expect quite a bit of development on this going into the future! <3

v0.3.1 has been released, it has a bunch of various tweaks (see the OP for the full changelog and download, as per usual). Here's info on the large stuff:
Layout Blocks handle creative mode interaction a lot better: I may have missed some interactions - I'll fix those as they're found, but now you won't consume/gain Layout Blocks in your inventory when interacting with them
Layout Block interaction with an empty hand now takes where you targeted on the block into consideration: Suggested by Wreckage so I decided to give it a shot, and I like it a lot - thanks again!
Wreckage posted his own image to explain what he meant when he suggested the feature, I altered the idea a tiny bit and I made an image overlaying the Layout Block texture so you can have a clear reference of the new controls:
Basically before if you right-clicked or sneak-right-clicked on a Layout Block with an empty hand you would chain blocks in a line on the opposite side of the block than what you clicked on. This functionality still exists and it occurs when you target the central area of one of the block's faces (represented by the angled arrow in that picture).
Now, if you click on one of the outer edges of a Layout Block, instead of placing/removing blocks on the opposite side - you can choose which side to add/remove them to/from by targeting somewhere within the respective area. I'm not the best at explaining, but the image is pretty self explanatory so test it out!.
Right now there is no in-game GUI overlay thingy (think in the style of the microblock placement overlay) to show where on the block you're aiming. This is for two reasons: one, I feel it's pretty intuitive and doesn't need one and two, I wanted to get feedback on the feature before I spent time adding in something that may not be needed (and just take up time/add clutter for no purpose).
With that said unless any big oversight/bug is found this should be the last 0.3 release. The next will be 0.4.0 and contain the first implementation of "Paint brushes" (for lack of a better name).
Enjoy!
