I already started it and I'm making some progress. Its not going to be hard to change the terrain generator(I can actually release these as separate mods for each type of gen) the hard part is making a button that allows you to select what kind of world gen and making it so that it stays with that type of world gen.

Yeah personally I liked the generation before 1.8 since its not like you said FLAT everything. Yeah I liked the generation before 1.8 but I kinda liked alpha a lot more.

I totally agree. 3rd gen and before had that iconic grass to go with it; the game felt fantasy. Now it's really realistic terrain. Who the hell wants to play a game like real life? Just go outside!!!

I'd use it! Great idea! Except I'm not a code writer and I have no idea how to create a mod!

Why not a "Classic" Generation. Like how the worlds are on the online version. Kinda flat, cliffy/blocky.

Personally, I'd rather see the current biome generation tweaked so it's more like 1.7.3. I would hate to lose a lot of the features that have been implemented recently (ravines, rivers, lakes, strongholds, swamps, mushroom island, etc.). That said, I can still get behind this project assuming you can load up a world in one version and switch it to another version later so you get multiple terrain generations on the same map.

My friend has a slightly working Beta that only has 3rd gen terrain, but sorry to have said that because it will not be ready for an unknown amount of time.

I love the idea.
I miss the old 1.1_02 Beta terrain.. Built my first base on a mountian, there was a desert behind the mountain, it was like a lake, but instead of water, just sand.. Was so lovely, I had turned it into a nice pool and everything!

Just the other day I wanted endless land, no large oceans in a world, but reverting to 1.6.6/1.1_02 wasn't an option due to the fact I'd revert back to 1.8 and if I rendered any new land it would all look goofy..
I'll definitely keep an eye on this topic.

Just thought I'd add this for any modders really interested in doing this; the way I see it, the best way to do this is to activate that "World Type" button and implement an API to support custom world generation. From there, we can standardize custom world types. This seems like a logical first step. After that's all done, all that we'd need to do is create files for accessing the old world generation code (and fix the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation world codes to work with seeds as pseudo-random numbers.) This is the best course of action, because even after we get what we wanted, we've also created a gateway for more easily accessible custom world generators.

TL;DR:
1) Make an API.
2) Fix generations 1-3 to work with seeds & add the old world generation codes.
3) Document it all and you just facilitated the creation of a hundred awesome new map types, modder.

Went and tried out MCNostalgia. Here's what I got after my fourth or fifth world right near the spawn:

Nah, just CyborgDragon's amazing MCNostalgia. I have an Indev jar from that program. Only version I wish it went far enough back for was Survival Test. Alas, it only includes patches to Indev.

Honestly, while i do miss my old alpha worlds, some of the new generation code isnt so bad, i like rivers and ravines, but yeah sometimes i miss that amazing mountain i had in my backyard...
EDIT: Just a question though, would using a world generated with the alpha code mean you don't get end portals? or would that be somehow placed into the code? And also, if you don't get the end portals, would a world generated with an older code not include endermen?
