Now, before anyone says anything, I understand there's SO. MANY. THINGS. that the mod would have to access to even remotely get close to noticing an update. But loosely, is this something that could happen? Maybe even in the future. Maybe an update in Forge can do this? A new modding format that connects to such a server? What do you guys think? I think it would be a great move in the future of modding.
Not impossible and not that hard ethier if you can code, All the devolpers would have to upload it to a site and have it hash check it and if the hash check is not the same the program can download it, but you would have to make a site for it so all the other devs can upload to it etc... You can't use mediafire etc I don't think.
Not with all mods but a lot of mods already have a thing in there code to check for updates. One thing though it is sometimes turned off in the config of the mod so I would check if any you have an update checker turned off.
It is possible the code would have to go and search the website the mod was downloaded from but most mods have an automatic update checker and the battle gear mod has something called MUD which will detect the update of any mod.

MUD will only check for updates in mods that are registered to it by the modder who created the mod, as far as I know Battlegear is the only one that takes advantage of it, but we haven't really advertised it.

According to FML's github page on the mcmod.info file, there's a field called "updateUrl" which is "Currently unimplemented, will eventually be used to automatically check for mod updates." Assuming it will be implemented at some point, developers who care to add an mcmod.info file for their Forge mods may also choose to add an updating URL. As for vanilla mods, I don't know.
I haven't heard of any mods that add support for mod update checking. It's a nice idea, but the problem is making it de facto. Even getting it known at all is difficult :/

I AM NOT YOUR PERSONAL MINECRAFT MOD SUPPORT AGENT, SO PLEASE DO NOT PM ME ABOUT PROBLEMATIC MODS THAT ARE NOT MINE. If you're having trouble/crashes with a mod, you'll have better luck resolving it in this forum section than PMing me. If you already made a topic, be patient about responses. If you have troubles with anything non-Minecraft related on your PC, I might be able to help, though, but no promises. Even though I could wish to be, I'm not a wizard.
