Well like the title says my son is a noob.
let me explain, my son plays mindcraft on the laptop, xbox and android tablet. well a few moths ago i have been noticing that the laptop settings are all changed and there are additional progams installed. Well after some investigating i found out my son wastrying to install some mmods for his mindcraft game.
well after some discipline from me and his mother i since investigated this mod situation and (after alot of begging) i decided to install a mod for himin his mindcraft game.
So i understand and how to do it and what to do but there is one question i need answered please.
so here it is.
on the current mod list for mindcraft 1.4.7 i noticed that it states under "COMPATIBILITY WITH FORGE" it says either forge required or forge compatable or n/a. so is that the forge in the game itself or is it another program or file i need to install one of the listed mods?
Forge is basically a collection of stuff (API Coding) that allows people who do mods to do them easier. So instead of having to code everything from scratch it can pull information from Forge to work this making a lot of mods require forge in order to run. Forge itself is essentially a mod but the things it does natively aren't major game changers as their main goal is the API for the modders. This is at least my understanding.
ok thanks for the info. so it seems that its a file(mod) that holds info that other files (mods) need so they grab it from the forge file.
i understand it although my explanation might not be that good. so in order to install any of the mods from the list for 1.4.7 mods
(found here http://modlist.mcf.li/versions/1.4.6_1.4.7.php) i need a forge? ok so where do i find this forge mod? and if i install it will it mess up other mods that dont require a forge? i dont think it will since its only accessed when a mod requires it correct.

It shouldn't cause problems with mods created that don't use forge. There is always a slight chance mods conflict and unless the developer fixes it then your left to choose between which one you want more. On the right side of that page you linked it says if the mod requires forge, is compatible, or isn't compatible. Most mod developers on this forum will say if it does or does not need forge. You can get forge from www.minecraftforge.net
Generally forge will only have issues with mods that edit base classes. The mods that edit base classes require you to install the mod directly in the minecraft.jar (will be explained in the instaltion instructions). Editing base classes is (thankfully) becoming a less and less common practice so hopefully you will not run into this issue.
Just remember to always back up your files before editing, that way if it does crash you can easily go back
thanks guys my son is very happy im his super hero tonight. after posting i installed the not enough items mod and it worked great he had a smile ear to ear. but he is begging for other mods although i didnt have to use a forge for the mod i installed. i guess its kinda trial and error to see what works and what doesnt.and yes i made a copy of the minecraft.jar file so if anything happens i have the original file to fall back on. now to learn how to install the forge.
