New people joining would ruin the experience for both the existing players, because the mobs scale down, and the new players, because the mobs didn't scale down enough.
Riding around on brooms or magic carpets?
Having your cats assist you in your magic?
Having teleportation spells, such as bubbles (Like Glinda), smoke (Like Elphaba (AKA Witch of the West), or turning into leaves and blowing to your destination?
Yes these are good but most people normally want to make some original stuff to make things a lot more interesting not things that have been copied and have been over used. People normally like things that they haven't seen before or that they don't know of. That's why mod programmers normally tend to try to make things that haven't been used yet such as this mod which was once called spellcraft in it's early versions then was later it changed it's name to ars magica to make it sound unique. Another great example of mods that does this is divine rpg whereas other mods like the eternal frost mod just tend to take some original stuff and put it into their mod.
"BEWARE the man who has nothing to lose, for he has only to gain."
Nooope. We are mages here. We like our spells and various constructs in HD! (not literally but we do like our spells to be pretty and stuff)
That's what resource packs are for. Feel free to make one, but I don't feel like doing all the artwork twice.
When Mithion gets it done - no sooner, no later. There is no estimated date, before you ask. He works on it at his own pace, but... you can always let your inner mage (if you have one lol) fish-flop about on the floor in anticipation. It does wonders for me lol.
PS: how do I add your banner? will do for support! Also, I'd use the lock utility on my server so support from my end!
Magic Ideas
Travel Spells:
The "Elemental Orbs" mod adds 'the water orb' which allows users to fly by creating a water bubble around them- as long as the orb lasts and they hold their breath. Unfortunately it stays leaving a massive trail of water source blocks in the world. Could there be a water spell with the same function but with temporary blocks?
It might also be cool to do the same thing with air underwater or to walk through sand. For the underwater variation it might be both air and water affinity & c.
This would be cool for water affinity by adding the option to fly without needing an air spell- but which would have the negative effect of making you hold your breath.
Multiple Affinities:
You said lava would be added to the fire affinity but why not make such spells use fire and fluid affinities? Making some spells use multiple affinities would add complexity and planning to each character.
Temporary Portals:
Creation of a nether portal that vanishes after a single use and leaves some nether material where it was created or an overworld portal which does the same
Block Modification:
An item powered by the nexus which changes the attributes of certain blocks within a radius would be cool. The more blocks powered, more types, and greater effects, the larger the power consumption. Could be used to make blocks harder to mine, explode, or to make them light you on fire with contact & c.
Misc. Ideas
Traveling and exploring, in addition to defeating bosses, as a primary source of increasing arcane knowledge, imo, was something really neat about AMI. I like the new spell crafting system even more though. Also you have already stated that traveling will still be implemented as a way to increase the speed with which one learns.
For the servers with a more adventurous spirit though, in the config file an option to lose a percentage of mana levels & c on death would be great. Also a disaster aside from exploding objects with too much negative energy- like a boss or un-natural disaster (magic equivalent of an earthquake) attracted by too much mana and items and such being used in a small area would be a cool way to prevent massive factories and independent playing styles developing as the primary pursuit of participants.
A few bosses that are nearly impossible to beat without half a dozen souls dying in a massive player vs. boss battle would be cool too. XD
*edit: may have figured out the banner thing but it doesn't look right from my end. :/
That might be cool: a sword that shoots an AOE fireball when guarding (left click) or when nothing is struck by the normal attack would be cool. XD -to name just one possible variation...
What if, when cast, it would see if there is any weapon in your inventory. If so, it enchants the first weapon it finds, and if not, it creates a bow/sword (depending if you have arrows)?
?
There's an item called the crystal wrench that can control where essence goes, just like what you're asking for in AM1.
Read the over post. All spells will be custom, made with shapes, components, and modifiers. Changes are coming to the essence system.
Edit: beat me to it, mith.
I was thinking it would be as customisable as the rest of the mod. So to get what you want you might get Empower + AOE + ignition + projectile.
This is one of the many ways it could be implemented, in the end it's up to Mithion how he wants to put it in, or even if he wants to put it in at all. Another idea is that there could be a block in which you place the weapon, and cast the spell on that block. It could be as easy or hard to get as he wants, he's better than me at balance.
Also, another idea i had is to make it so that you start out with one or two "slots" in which you can combine elements, and have to unlock more to get more complex spells. As for affinities, I think it would be nice to simply make it cost more mana to cast spells of the opposite affinity, as well as making it much harder to create spells of that affinity.
Also consider adding in a title system for multiplayer servers and maybe adding them to single player. Basically the title system would work like the achievements system in vanilla BUT you would be able to display your title via inputting command via chat or command block i.e. /titles - to display achieved titles /displaytitle [name] - to pick a title
and the title would hover over you avatar like this : Archmage or <<Archmage>> or whatever
basically that's what I have on mind, please consider them and keep working on the mod. I like what you have for AM2 so far so keep it up
