Hi guys, cloverplayer here, I just wanted to throw an idea out there and see what the response is. No I don't do mods, although I would love to learn how, and if someone/some modding team wants to make this, that would be great (kinda why I posted this). Anyway, there's a huge ocean, and tons of lakes, but what's in them? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. These are my ideas to add to that nothingness to make it something worth going into.
Recipe items:
First, a snorkel helmet for exploring the ocean depths safely.
Recipie will probably be something like this: ( = sugar canes, : : = leather)
Allows you to breath an extra two squares underwater, and you can see clearly (no bubble blocking your view). Works like this:
= still breathing
Next, fins that replace foot armor:
( = fin, and again = leather)
= 1 fin (no use)
= pair of fins that you can put on
They make you swim twice as fast underwater, maybe even faster (but not when you're just falling).
Third is an air tank.
= filled air tank
It would would act just like food (in the way that you would "eat it"), except it doesn't vanish, just turns into an "empty air tank," and you must have a snorkel mask to use. It fully refills your oxygen meter instead of hearts and keeps it full for a certain amount of time. Refillable by right clicking with an empty one above water.
Pink Coral:
Pink coral that generates on underwater reefs. If connected to Red Coral, it lights itself and all chains of connected Pink Coral. Drops 1 Pink Coral Shards. Is crafted by four pink coral shards.
Pink Coral Shards:
Can be crafted to make Pink Coral. Can be placed for underwater redstone and can craft with sticks to make Pink Coral Torches.
Edit: changed lightbulbs to torches
Here's a waterproof Pink Coral torch. ( = Pink Coral Shards)
=4 Pink Coral Torches
Brighter than a torch and works underwater and (obviously) above.
Last is an iron boat:
= iron boat
Same as a boat but doesn't break if you crash, and is stronger than normal boats (it doesn't break if you hit it with a sword by mistake). Is able to cut through ice at a slower speed.
Non-recipe items/blocks:
Salty Seaweed/Seaweed:
Found underwater more commonly at the lower levels, occasionally at the very top levels, salty seaweed is less common than seaweed.
Acts just like sugar canes do in the way it grows, and makes salt when crafted, along with it turning to Seaweed. Seaweed can be smelted to "cooked seaweed" which restores 1.5 hearts.
Salt:
No use yet, may be included in a food recipe similar to cakes.
Telescope:
Allows you to look very far if right-clicking while holding. Can be found in Treasure Chests.
Treasure Chests:
Chests that are found in/near sunken ships (one per sunken ship, maybe a double). No use other than for decoration (but can still store things like normal chests).
Petrified Wood:
Is found under/nearby sunken ships (same rarity as mossy cobblestone).
Rotten Wood/Antique Wood:
The blocks that make up sunken ships. Only for decoration.
Underwater Mob Spawner:
A mob spawner that spawns underwater mobs.
Red Coral:
Red coral that glows a dim red and has a small chance of generating on an underwater reef. Is an underwater redstone source.
Generations:
Underwater Reefs:
Reefs with 3 or four blocks of water above them. Are generated on underwater "hills" of sand or some other underwater block. Would have Pink Coral and some Red Coral.
Underwater caves:
Usually small (but sometimes connected to large) caves that are deep underwater. Would have a higher chance of generating rare materials near them. They would be generated something like underwater air pockets that have small "beaches", leading up to some stone.
Sunken Ships:
Cracked ships with half going into the ground and the other half coming out. Would spawn only on the lowest floors of the particular ocean. They would have about 6 different designs, and would be slightly more common than dungeons. Inside of them (or right next to them) would be one or two "Treasure Chests" with maps (from update 1.6), wheat, apples, lapis lazuli, gold, a compass, a telescope (the only way to get one) and a very, very small chance of diamond that could generate in them. They would also have an 'Underwater Mob Spawner" near/inside them.
Mobs:
Crabs: (like the ones from the other mod, I think it was "Mo' Creatures")
Mobs that spawn on sand near/in water, move very fast but cant jump when out of water, they chase you if within sight and take two hearts away if touched. They can swim, but only slowly, and have 3 heart health.
Angry Squids:
Same as squids except they have angry eyes, take 2.5 hearts away if touched, and chase you if within range.
Sharks: (like the ones in the other mod, I don't remember what it's called)
Mobs that spawn only in the lower layers of the ocean, and are pretty uncommon. They take away 3 hearts if touched, have 5 heart health, and swim slightly faster than you.
I probably will add more to this list but that's all I can think of at the moment.
I'm open to suggestions, so suggest something as a reply! And even if you don't have anything to suggest, just state your thoughts about this.
also, this is very simialar to a mod idea (possibly being modded) called oceancraft. I'm hoping we can join ideas! Heres the url: (for some reason links haven't been working for me)

I think I remember a mod where it gives you diving items and such.
Though I do approve of underwater caves, l know there might be some already generated, as I found one. I really hope Ocean Biomes or similar is added, oceans are kind of plain. More tropical environments would be cool

It would just make them be generated on purpose, instead of the result of a glitch.
the "old" oceancraft that you are talking about is currently being made, and you basically copy his ideas, delete one thing, and add another. Not to bash your idea, I'm just saying that it is already there. and also I don't want major changes like tons of mobs and tons of new items (more than one fishing rod), just a couple. Otherwise it wouldn't be minecraft. I and many others don't want the ocean to have more mobs than anywhere else. Anyway, you have a couple new Ideas that I like, but you should just suggest them to the original oceancraft post. That is a mod that is actually being made. I am hoping that the maker of oceancraft adds some/all of my ideas that he doesn't have. It just gets annoying when there are tons of different pages of the same thing (aka the aether, there are like 5 or 6 posts for that).

i am aware of the other mod being made on oceancraft. the mod i have started is more of an improved version of that, including a wide diversity of mods for oceans, tools for hunting them, improved tools already available in minecraft, and a variety of other things. the page i made is ALSO a place to post new ideas.
anyway, if the mod doesnt work out, i plan to donate the ideas to the already-present oceancraft that they are creating. that is if it doesnt work out.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Sticks and stones may break your bones but a diamond sword cuts your head off!

okay, i just wasn't shure what you were planning for that. Srry if I sounded like a jerk.
I am in charge of the Oceancraft Mod linked in qwertyz's topic. We have started but if you would like to suggest anything go onto the suggestion page that brought me here and many of the ideas may get in.
