I really disapprove of the idea of making items craftable without researching them. At that point, you had might as well remove the research altogether as all it would take to craft things is a simple Google search to find the recipe.
Personally, as I've said before, I love the research mini-game. I find it really fun, and still find it fun after having done it over twenty times. The thaumonomicon does need a bit of polishing to make some things a bit more clear, though having a large portion of it remain vague and cryptic is also a good thing as it fits well with the nature of the mod itself. It allows the player to discover things for themselves, which is a good thing as well. Certain things, though, like the rules of research concerning node-branching and similar aspects could be further elaborated on to help ease some of the confusion and frustration that comes along with it for some players.
I also don't consider the semi-random nature of getting specific research notes a bad thing, in fact quite the opposite. I think having it so you simply say "I want to research this" and being able to do so would take a lot of the fun out of the system, but again - that's just my personal opinion on the matter.
I had no problem researching things without using a cheat sheet, and completed every research fairly quickly just using some logical thought and deductive reasoning. I don't really see how it could take someone almost a month to research everything, unless they only had a few minutes a day to play.
You saying I'm whiny and complaining. Is just trying to discount my opinion without any effort.
I have said 1 thing that was immature. Then said I was wrong. So your version of immature is quite interesting.
You assume that I have not tried and played on my own and sought out help because I have a differing opinion about a system.
I assume a lot of you are "15 year old fan boys" because of the wordings of posts in the threads.
Now that we are both wrong we can move on.
My opinion still stands, The research system is complete garbage.
Perhaps the reason people dislike your opinion so much isn't just about the opinion itself... but the way you foolishly worded it. It dose come off as immature and as a result people think you are immature. The fact that your using a new account also isn't helping much. How about we have a civil conversation without insulting anyone or calling a whole concept "garbage".

Glad you like playing a Research puzzle game.
I like playing minecraft.
The only reason I use a cheat sheet is because I want to play minecraft instead of a research puzzle game. That is where my frustration is coming from, spending way too much time trying to research the cool stuff instead of playing with the cool stuff.
Also, if you read previous posts (this is the 5th now) It hasn't taken me a month to research everything, there was a server restart in between so I had to start over.
Perhaps the reason people dislike your opinion so much isn't just about the opinion itself... but the way you foolishly worded it. It dose come off as immature and as a result people think you are immature. The fact that your using a new account also isn't helping much.
Sorry, I didn't know that I would need an account that has been around for years to be taken seriously. Also I do not believe my opinion is "foolishly" worded. Its actually quite clear and concise.

Personally, as I've said before, I love the research mini-game. I find it really fun, and still find it fun after having done it over twenty times.
So, you personally, would continue to use the research system as the principal means of gaining access to items.
I, personally, would probably on subsequent games, just make the items I needed to unlock node-in-a-jar or arcane bore or whatever I needed without bothering to juggle points around. But for other items I would do the research. what the hell.
Other people might "spoil" the whole thing and look stuff up on a wiki. They can do that right now to find out which aspects are required for specific research. They can, right now, find the optimal order to scan things, especially to ensure they make the most of the first time discovery bonus - by scanning a block of redstone rather than redstone dust to discover machina/potentia. You and I could do the same thing. But we don't.
Different people have different ideas of fun. And that doesn't make the cheaters 'wrong' and I don't see the point of locking impatient people out of thaumcraft out of a sense of self righteous indignation of how COULD they dare to use <some arcane item> without going through the grind I went through (And enjoy to boot).
Now, on a server, there is a strong argument that the playing field should be level. If the research mechanism is there to balance progress to end game items and/or to give players a level of prestige for achieving a "high level" in a particular mod in a competitive way then sure. Make the research system even harder.
But. Pragmatically. In a "for fun" environment. Allowing items to be directly made by players who know how to make them. But researched by players who want the full research experience. Will allow some determined players to use out-of-game means to skip research. But that will effect them only, but make the game a lot less grindy on repeat attempts for the rest of us.
Sorry, I'll just somehow look into the future next time to see if I'll need an account someplace before I post there to have an opinion. Also I do not believe my opinion is "foolishly" worded. Its actually quite clear and concise.
Right. But calling the whole research system garbage dosen't sound immature to you? As well as insulting people you haven't spoken to yet by calling them "15 year old fanboys"? Cause it isn't just me here who thought it sounded immature. Honestly I can't help but read your posts and think of an angry tone while reading due to your first post.
I agree that the aspects could be sorted better, maybe by degree of complexity and then alphabetically. That way it shows up as primal, primal+primal, compound+primal, compound+compound, compoud^2+primal, and so on. This makes it much easier to combine aspects since going up the chain just involves going down the line. Also, if we could be able to hover over an essence to see what makes it instead of having to close the interface to check the book, that would make it let tedious(this includes greying out icons instead of removing the icon when empty).

There is a rare mythical button called "Search" that likes to answer questions; however, due to its nature, it often blends in with its surroundings so as to remain hidden.

(edited my previous post to sound a bit less mean)
Yep, you would be right too. Cause again the only reason I came here to post because of how frustrating it is. Being frustrated and angry does not equal immature. This still doesn't mean anything.
I could have also said. The research system is bad. Basically means the same thing.
The research system is bad and limiting.
Glad you like playing a Research puzzle game.

I like playing Minecraft, too. Fortunately for me, I can play both Minecraft and the research mini-game at the same time.
My point was that I disagree with the concept of just being able to outright craft things. I'm sorry you don't like the mini-game, but I don't see that as a reason enough to completely undermine it.

Yes, you can use a cheat sheet and make things easier. But you still have to actually do something. You have to get the research note and you have to solve the research note.

I'm well aware that opinions differ. I didn't say anyone was wrong, and I don't know why you even brought that up in response to my post. Are you actually offended that I don't think you should be given everything on a silver platter? Your tone as well as accusing me of having a "self righteous indignation" of any kind certainly suggests that you are. Just as you say that cheaters aren't wrong, nor am I wrong for my opinion of thinking you should have to put some effort into the mod to be able to obtain its items.

I still disagree with the idea. Sorry. Thaumcraft has always been, as long as I've played it, a mod that requires time and effort in order to obtain its rewards. That, to me, isn't a bad thing. I'm not against an easier method for those of you who can't stand the thought of repeating the process, but I am against the method being "I can just make stuff without ever having to do any research".

When frustrated and angry it's best to calm down a bit before doing anything else. To other people who didn't know you had been frustrated it came off as immature and resulted in... well, all of this.
Yes, it means the same thing, but words are powerful. What sounds more polite to you? "This is bad. I don't like it too much." or "This whole thing is a big pile of garbage and shouldn't exist at all."?

Due to my snarky and sarcastic personality I can easily be seen as a jerk. If I've offended you in any way it was likely unintended.
As of version 2 Thaumcraft progression is based on research and dicovery not minecraft tiers - you will probably never buy a game based on mechanics you don't like.

Good thing I bought Minecraft way before 1.6 then.

I completely agree with this. I have tried playing it for a while now, and have said how I feel about it. I don't think it should be removed completely. Just maybe made easier to research certain things that I would want to use. Instead of spending however long researching and researching until I finally get to what I was aiming for.

Indeed words are powerful, and that is why I chose to use words like "garbage" instead of "bad" Never said anything about it not existing but w/e. Ultimately this is what I wanted. I wanted to express my frustration, and it comes from a place of "this thing could be really awesome"

Yes, I know that. Being an avid gamer and game developer, I understand that people don't buy based on mechanics you don't like. I don't understand what this has to do with anything though.
I want this mod to be even better, and I think it will be. Thinking about new players and people who will just want to try it out at first. The research is off-putting to new players. That doesn't mean oh well they don't like it so they wont play it. I would want everyone to play my game or mod and would try to make it friendly to them without completely losing my original idea. The reason Thaumcraft sparked my interest early on was the cool things it added. (wands, magic, infusion, golems...ect) But when they are faced with such a huge task of researching every little thing to get to the one cool thing that originally interested them they will probably give it up.
Well recently Azanor has been thinking of changing the research system yet again. You say you are a game developer so what would you do to make research more fun or better then it is currently?

What is humorous is that all the whining could have been avoided if you had read the recent few pages.
Azanor has acknowledged that the research system isn't quite where it needs to be.
No real gain coming in here telling the mod author a portion of his game is garbage.
A quick question to the forum regulars. I don't want to make it "official" by putting up a poll.
I have been giving research some thought lately. The rune connection mini-game seems to have been a hit with a lot of people, but it also seem to be the cause of a lot of frustration with others. It also starts getting old very quick if you have to do it multiple times. I found myself going "Ugh, not this again" when I had to redo research on the Forgecraft 3 server and that is usually a warning sign that something is wrong
I have been considering an alternative system and would like some opinions on it. Read through it all before commenting
The first major change would be that the rune connection minigame will go away. The aspect research points will be used to purchase the research directly. For example: Nitor will cost 1 ignem, 1 lux and 1 potentia. This will probably be done via the thaumonomicon directly by simply clicking on the research and the required research will be shown right off the bat assuming you have discovered the required aspects. Research will remain hidden until all the aspects required to purchase it is discovered.
Secondly, scanning will have diminishing returns. You will still need to scan to get RP, but for the most you will only get good RP for the first few scans of a particular aspect. This is mostly due to the fact that there will be very little "wasted" RP since you won't have to move runes around, etc.
Thirdly, the research table will remain. It will be used to combine aspects like it is currently. I am also considering using it as a way to "unlock" certain research options. You don't use it to do the research itself, but simply to make it available for purchase. In effect this will replace the lame lost knowledge fragment system.
As part of this I am considering using the old artifact system from TC2 as part of this - either as a source of RP or used in the mechanic to unlock lost knowledge (or both). Obviously this means that there will need to be more lost knowledge beyond the golem items.
NOTE: I'm just kicking around ideas and I'm just posting this to test the waters. I currently have no plans or any concrete thoughts in regards to changes.
Well recently Azanor has been thinking of changing the research system yet again. You say you are a game developer so what would you do to make research more fun or better then it is currently?
Well, first I would start off with my idea of changing it to a system where the player might be able to choose their next research. They still have to sit and do the mini-game part of the research, but it would eliminate the more or less "randomness" of trying to get the research they want to. I'll give you an example that I am currently having.
I want to research a better wand so I can move nodes and not have to travel so far to recharge my wand.
The problem could be solved simple enough If I could actually get the new wand core research notes. I have tried entering every element in the wand cores and I am still not able to research them. This is where it becomes frustrating, and a daunting task of researching everything else that comes up before I am able to actually do what I want to do.
This of course would need testing and feedback just like every other change to a mod or game. But this would be my first step, and if I feel it becomes to easy I would maybe change it to where I can select a "Branch" of a research "tree" and go down that path, then test and get feedback accordingly.
What is humorous is that all the whining could have been avoided if you had read the recent few pages.

I still feel as though I have answered the question Azanor was essentially saying. Which, to me was, "how do you like the research system?" and he gave a possible alternative he was throwing around.
There is 256 pages here so, sorry that I didn't read them all. It is a lot of information.
I personally really like the idea, the only problem I see with that is there are people that have said they really enjoy the rune mini-game. and it is basically removing that from them.
(...) I would want everyone to play my game or mod and would try to make it friendly to them without completely losing my original idea.
Yes, I agree with you on that matter but this applies only if you want to sell something or ( in case of mods) you are making mod only for ppl/public but when it comes to something that you are making also for yourself you want mechanics you like :).
Note that most of use really enjoy this new research system :).
I think nothing "special" can be remedied in case of the new world for nth time - every new idea will work only for first time, cheat sheet is the best. I'm not talking about polishing - this can be done and done and...never ends ;).

that's part of not losing your original ideas. If you are the type of developer that only makes mechanics you like, your mod or game will be severely limited to a specific group of people, not that its bad. But when you are working on something like a mod/game you want it to get big. You may not say it out loud so you donlt jinx it lol, But you want as many people as possible to play it. Then you hear what they have to say about it and you will make it better accordingly, based off what ideas you have. its how developers learn what works and what doesn't, and grow to make even better things later on.

I agree on making things better but once again, this ( as a whole ) only applies to products developed from a to z for public as a target. Also you can't say "everyone" as it is simply impossible to satisfy everyone.
"(..) I have a different take on game design than a lot of modders do. We have a fantasy setting, nothing needs to make sense! I reject your reality and substitute it with pasta!" mDiyo, mod developer.
I know I'm new here but I'm currently puzzled by something with the infusion enchanter.
I have the right items, and aspects as what's listed in the thaumonomicon for Unbreaking (1 Iron Pick Axe, 1 Salis Mundus, 1 Obsidian, 4 Instrumentum, 8 Ordo, 4 Praecantatio. Heck I have a full jar of each just in case. I also have 24 levels to offer it.)
Unfournately it doesn't seem to want to activate it when I tap my wand on the Runic Matrix. I'm trying to get it on my Pickaxe of the Core with Repair II enchant on it.
Any idea why it's not working? Here's a screenshot just in case
Using Thaumcraft 4.0.4c and only other mod I have installed is Rei's Minimap

I still feel as though I have answered the question Azanor was essentially saying. Which, to me was, "how do you like the research system?" and he gave a possible alternative he was throwing around.
There is 256 pages here so, sorry that I didn't read them all. It is a lot of information.
I personally really like the idea, the only problem I see with that is there are people that have said they really enjoy the rune mini-game. and it is basically removing that from them.
We have that already.
